This draft class is loaded with WR talent. I can’t remember a draft class that had this many good WR coming out of it. In 2019, we saw a really good WR draft class with A.J. Brown, Terry McLaurin, D.K. Metcalf, and Marquise Brown (just to name a few). In 2020, I think we have the best rookie WR class ever. There isn’t a guy in the Top 12 that can’t make an impact from Day 1. I was only going to rank my Top 10 guys but wanted to talk about a few more, so I did 12. I hope you enjoy it, and at the bottom, I ranked my honorable mentions that just missed the cut.
1. CeeDee Lamb
Lamb is my favorite rookie WR. He has been a playmaker the last 3 years at Oklahoma. Lamb has been fortunate enough to play with Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, and Jalen Hurts. CeeDee has always been on stride regardless of who his QB was. Lamb took his game to a whole different level in 2019. He can dominate at all 3 levels of the field. The 49ers traded DeForest Buckner to the Colts for the 13th overall pick in the draft and I have no reason not to believe that the 9ners won’t be targeting a WR.
I think Jeudy will land on either the Jets or the Raiders and Lamb will fall to 49ers. Alongside Deebo Samuel, Lamb would be a fantasy-relevant WR right away. Lamb can make plays that most cant and I think he is the most pro-ready WR in this rookie class. I would be ecstatic to own Lamb in dynasty leagues. Lamb will be a top 5 pick in rookie drafts.
2. Jerry Jeudy
Jeudy’s play was still impressive in 2019 despite having a less productive year statistically than 2018. Jeudy is most people’s WR 1 in this rookie class, and I think he is very talented and deserves that respect. Jerry Jeudy is the best route runner in college football and uses techniques that have never been seen before to get open. Jeudy also has a deep game and can fly down the sidelines to secure a long catch. My concern for Jeudy is that he has long legs and the way he likes to juke around concerns me.
He has a similar running pattern to Robert Griffin and it didn’t take long for RG3 to go down with a career-dampening knee injury. I am not wishing injury upon Jeudy but it is a major concern for me. I hope the best for Jeudy and I can’t blame people for wanting this guy in dynasty leagues. If his value right, I would want him as well, but his running form and knee movement make me concerned for a major knee injury somewhere down the line.
3. Jalen Reagor
In a class of talented WR, Reagor is special in his own way. An electric WR and that can get up to his top speed in a matter of seconds. Reagor ran a 4.47 40 at the combine which was a little disappointing as he was expected to run one of the top times of the combine.Jalen Reagor had a limited role at TCU despite having great talent. Reagor only brought in 43 catches over slightly over 600 yards in his 2019 campaign.
Reagor was the punt-returner as well and was able to take any punt to the house. Once punters realize that the returner is that good, they will usually aim to kick the balls out of bounds. (i.e. the treatment that Devin Hester received). While speaking of the Bears, that is exactly where I believe Reagor will end up. The Bears have two second-round picks and they will need to use one to replace Taylor Gabriel.
The TCU WR will be able to fit right into Matt Nagy’s scheme and gives another target to newly acquired Nick Foles. Reagor goes in the back end of dynasty rookie drafts and can even fall into the second, grab him for his electric playstyle and ability to make a home run play every team the ball in his hands.
4. Henry Ruggs III
Henry Ruggs ran an outstanding 4.27 40 at the combine. Wow! The blazing speed that will help him transition to the next level. Teams will be very happy to take this speedster. When you possess a guy this fast on your team, it helps in both games– running and passing. Corners must stay on their toes because if they are caught with their eyes in the backfield, they are beaten and there goes Ruggs for a 65-yard TD. Ruggs excels in the slant game and many times at Alabama, Ruggs would take a slant and extend it into a long play. A problem I have with Ruggs is that he is a smaller receiver and if a corner is physical and likes to press, Ruggs may be in trouble.
Ruggs does have soft hands to bring the ball in though. Most guys with his caliber of speed aren’t the greatest WR in the pros. There has more correlation to speedy WR to not do well in the league than to do well. I believe that Henry Ruggs will be drafted by the Denver Broncos and join Drew Lock and company. Denver is heading in the right direction with Courtland Sutton and Noah Fant, just acquire Melvin Gordon, and adding Ruggs to the mix would be a success. Ruggs would be able to take the top off the defense which will benefit the whole offense. I’m still a little hesitant on Ruggs because I don’t know how much production he will have his rookie year. He is still a 1st round in dynasty rookie drafts and could pay off if he is the next Tyreek Hill.
5. Justin Jefferson
Could Joe Burrow‘s job be any easier at LSU? Between Ja’Marr Chase (2021 stud, trade for the 1.01!) and Justin Jefferson, whoever was the QB at LSU would have put up great numbers. Jefferson made a name for himself after a four TD day against the Sooners in the Peach Bowl. Justin is known for his focus when it comes to contested catches. Jefferson is very capable of sliding into the slot and does a great job of creating separation while also a great blocker in the run game.
Jefferson is accustomed to playing in purple and gold, and I think that will continue in 2020. After trading Stefon Diggs to the Buffalo Bills, the Vikings will need to find a replacement. Jefferson would be a great pickup for the Vikings and should be a Day one starter. The Vikings aren’t known for having a prolific passing offense but Jefferson could be a great red-zone target.
Monitor Jefferson’s landing spot as they are much better fantasy opportunities than the Vikings. Jefferson goes in the mid to late round in dynasty rookie drafts and I would like to see where he lands before I pull the trigger.
6. Tee Higgins
Tee Higgins has a great lengthy frame that gives him the potential to play above the rim and make big-time catches when called upon. Higgins is one of the taller WR talents at 6′ 4″, and his height allows him to go over the top of corners and secure catches. Higgins has tall legs that help him get off the line quickly and create immediate separation. At Clemson, he would slide from X-Y-Z and excel at all 3 locations. Higgins caught a TD on 20% of his total catches at Clemson. This guy has a knack for the red zone and I believe he has the potential to grab double-digit TD each year.
The Eagles need a playmaker in their receiving core and this is exactly where Higgins falls in. Higgins would immediately give Carson Wentz a new flashy target. Wentz has dealt with old and banged up WRs for most of his career and Higgins would make things much smoother for Wentz. Under Pederson, Higgins has the opportunity to get 100 targets as a rookie. Higgins is my top target in the back end of 1st round rookie drafts if he lands on the Eagles. I truly hope the Eagles are smart here and take their future star WR. Higgins has what it takes to be an immediate fantasy producer in dynasty leagues.
7. Denzel Mims
Denzel Mims has risen in my rankings since the combine. Mims dominated the NFL Combine and may have earned himself a selection in the 1st round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Mims is just a physical WR that can go out and play football. A major concern for Mims is the number of balls he dropped at Baylor. Mims had 18 passes dropped that were considered catchable over the last 2 seasons. His ability to go up and get the ball is what will make coaches forget about those drops.
I think Mims would be a good fit for the Miami Dolphins. Mims would most likely have a new rookie QB ( I think Tua) to play with him. Tua and Mims would be able to get off on the right start by coming in together and I think they would be able to produce fantasy points right away. I hope Mims can sure up those hands going forward because we have seen how good Tua has been with Jeudy and Ruggs. Mims is rising on my rookie WR rankings, and depending on landing spot, he can be a steal in rookie dynasty drafts.
8. Laviska Shenault Jr.
Shenault is a big body receiver that can go up and catch any ball that is thrown to him. Shenault missed some time in 2019 with injuries, but still led the FBS with 9.6 receptions a game. The 9.6 catches a game led him to be 4th in the nation with 112.3 receiving yards a game. Statistically, Lavsika had a much better 2018 than in 2019. Injuries sustained in 2019 have hurt his draft stock, but he is an outstanding receiver. He possesses a great combination of strength, speed, and size.
Shenault’s only apparent worry is that sustainability. He missed time in 2019 and also had labrum and toe surgery before the season. I think he still is a 1st-round WR and the Green Bay Packers should take a good look at him. Lining him up across from Davante Adams would give Aaron Rodgers another big red-zone target. Shenault will go in the first round of rookie drafts and would be a great pick for dynasty teams. With Rodgers, Laviska will be one of my favorite rookie WR.
9. Brandon Aiyuk
Aiyuk had to set the bar in 2019 to be considered a draftable WR in this draft class, and that is exactly what he did. Aiyuk had a monster 2019 campaign as he brought in 65 catches for over 1,100 yards and 8 TD. He is a big body receiver that has speed as he ran a 4.5 at the 2020 NFL Combine. After watching Aiyuk’s film, he may be one of the best route runners in this class.
If I had to say one poor thing about him, it would be his toughness. He struggles to his body to be a dominant force against smaller corners. Aiyuk will be a Day two guy and I think he should be considered by the Baltimore Ravens, He would join an electric play-maker in Marquise Brown and would help Lamar continue on his 2019 NFL MVP campaign. BA is a great dynasty rookie WR to own if you have a later pick in the first round or a early 2nd to acquire to him. Aiyuk is one of my favorite rookie WR.
10. Bryan Edwards
Bryan Edwards is a big-bodied WR from South Carolina. He is 6’3” 215lbs and can outman anyone lining across from him. His highlights show his insane catch radius and his spectacular one-hand catches. Edwards has pure speed, but where he lacks is footwork and elusiveness. His senior stats at South Carolina 71/816/6, which is good numbers to have because this is what he done in 10 games. Unfortunately, he has been getting injured this past year with his knees and his current broken foot, which made him sit out of the combine. Edwards’ rehab is going very well, but will still slide down draft boards as teams can’t bring him in for a workout. Edwards is very talented and will be a steal if he falls into the 4th round of your rookie drafts. Bryan Edwards is one of the biggest values out of all of the rookie WR.
11. Chase Claypool
I have been on Claypool since about January. When watching him play, he gives me the sense of Mike Evans or even Calvin Johnson. Many considered him a tight end but he shocked many coaches with his performance at the combine. After running in the 4.4 range, many not know that he is, in fact, a WR.
Claypool grabbed 13 TD in 2019 and he has all the tangibles to make contested catches in the red zone. He is a physical specimen at 6′ 4″ 240 lbs. He will have his name called in the second round of the NFL Draft. The best of all is that he will find a role with a WR-needy team that isn’t terrible. I see him falling to the Eagles in the second round and will be an instant star with Carson Wentz. Claypool has potential to be the best rookie WR in this class.
12. KJ Hamler
Hamler is a raw prospect with nitrous speed. KJ doesn’t have the typical build of an NFL WR but he is an elite burner of a slot WR. Hamler can beat about any corner down the field and make the big play. I remember watching him against Michigan this year, when he beat a safety over the top, not only once, but twice for a long TD, I knew this kid would be a big name in the 2020 NFL Draft.
I think we see Hamler get picked on Day 2 of the NFL Draft. It would make me to believe a good spot for Hamler would to land in Tennessee alongside A.J. Brown. As Brown works himself in the middle of the field, Hamler would be able to take the tops off defenses. Hamler would be a great fit for the Titans and could earn himself the starting role quickly. KJ has the speed that considers him of the top rookie WR in this class.
Honorable Mention – Michael Pittman Jr. , Devin Duvernay, Tyler Johnson, Quintez Cephus, and many more…
