Thinking about fantasy football? Good because we’re going over the biggest Quarterback changes this off-season, and how it may impact their fantasy value.
As 2QB and Superflex leagues grow in popularity, the biggest mistake someone can make transitioning into this roster change is to undervalue the Quarterback position.
In 1QB leagues, you most certainly can draft a quarterback in the later rounds and then play the waiver wire week to week if needed. But this luxury isn’t available when the average team is rostering three quarterbacks at any given time.
This is why it’s important to know what happens outside the consensus top 10 and look for those players who will bring back value at a later-round draft pick.
So, on that note, lets begin with the most recent trade this of-season: Sam Darnold.
1. Sam Darnold
- Carolina, Panthers – Acquired in a trade from the New York, Jets
I really do believe Sam Darnold is going to have a bounce-back season this year. Too many times now we’ve witnessed players playing under Adam Gase have terrible careers, but when they get away from Gase’s grasp they go on to have successful fantasy seasons under new coaches. The most recent being Ryan Tannehill.
There’s no reason to just ignore trends because coaching changes really do make an impact. He’ll be going to Matt Rhule’s pass-friendly offense and he’ll also be reuniting with wide receiver Robby Anderson, from their playing time in New York.
He’ll also have D.J. Moore, Dan Arnold, and last but not least Christian McCaffrey. He’s transitioned over into an improved offense and with a coach who isn’t afraid to move the ball.
A lot of people will be hesitant to take a flyer on Darnold this year, because of his history. But we just watched Teddy Bridgewater have the best season of his career playing in Matt Rhule’s system, and I’m not convinced that Teddy is a better Quarterback than Sam Darnold.
I’m looking at Sam Darnold’s way as a value pick this year. I don’t see him having an exceptionally high ADP going into the season, and if it stays that way it makes him a perfect sleeper candidate.

2. Ryan Fitzpatrick
- Washington, Football Team – One-year, $10 million
Of all the quarterbacks the Washington Football Team could have signed, I’m ecstatic Ryan Fitzpatrick is bringing the magic to Washington and giving Terry McLaurin fantasy managers what we’ve all been wishing for since day one.
Fans of the game felt cheated out of watching Fitzpatrick play when he was replaced by Tua Tagovailoa last year in Miami. But, fortunately for us and fortunately for Fitzpatrick, he is joining a team with a lot of weapons, a good coach, and a defense to always keep them in a game.
For years now Fitzpatrick has been a gunslinger and we know exactly what we’re getting out of him. Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, Logan Thomas, and Antonio Gibson will be leading the way in targets, and I expect all of their ADPs to skyrocket closer and closer to September. Fitzpatrick has this magic about him that squeezes the most fantasy value out of his supporting cast.
There have been whispers that Washington is prepared to draft a quarterback if one falls to them in this year’s draft, and if this were to happen Fitzpatrick might end up having PTSD from last season in Miami.
For those in 1QB leagues, he’ll be a streaming option and for those in 2QB/Superflex leagues, I’d be comfortable targeting him as my QB2 or QB3.

3. Andy Dalton
- Chicago, Bears – One-year, $10 million
This isn’t the worst signing, but it’s also not the best, and that’s why Bears fans aren’t sold. Andy Dalton isn’t exactly who you’d imagine being a team’s franchise quarterback.
This past season with Dallas, Andy Dalton was sacked 23 times and in 2020 the Bears were ranked bottom-12 in pass blocking, and they haven’t done anything to improve their offensive line this offseason. Andy Dalton is 33 years old and this year he may not have the mobility that’s needed at times.
But, Andy Dalton also isn’t the guaranteed starter. Quarterback Nick Foles is still on the team and I expect that there will be some training camp and preseason competition for the starting job.
We have witnessed Andy Dalton keep players’ fantasy relevant in the past, and lock in on a target. If this target is Allen Robinson, which it should be because he’s already had back-to-back seasons with 150+ targets and 1000+ yards, and Andy Dalton should be able to keep that trend going.

4. Carson Wentz
- Indianapolis, Colts – Acquired in a trade from the Philadelphia, Eagles
Finally, after what was one of the biggest stories of the offseason, the Eagles have moved on from former franchise quarterback, Carson Wentz.
Carson Wentz really did not have a good year last year. From a fantasy standpoint, yes he did have some good weeks, but for the most part, he hurt your team. But now he’s reuniting with his former offensive coordinator, now head coach Frank Reich. The last time they played together was when Carson Wentz had the best season of his career, so there’s already a lot of optimism leading into the 2021 season.
Like I mentioned earlier, Carson Wentz played bad football last year and was eventually replaced by rookie Jalen Hurts. So the biggest concern for him is if the conflict with his old coach, GM, and teammates were the reasons he wasn’t playing well. Or, has he actually fizzled out sooner than anyone would have expected?
Personally, I think he’s going to be surprisingly good with the Colts. He’s going behind one of the best offensive lines in the league, reuniting with a coach who knows him and more specifically knows how to work with him. He has all the weapons he needs to succeed and a running game to lean on. Not to mention we saw Philip Rivers rebound in this same system this past year.
In a 2QB/Superflex league, Carson Wentz will make a great high end QB2, and the perfect candidate to snag off waivers in 1QB leagues.

5. Jameis Winston
- New Orleans, Saints – One-extension worth up to $12 million
So what’s going to happen in New Orleans? Drew Brees has retired leaving the position to be filled by either Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill. But every fantasy manager’s worst nightmare would be a scenario where we would see some bizarre hybrid timeshare, and strangely I wouldn’t be at all surprised.
But the likelihood of that actually coming to fruition is quite slim. If anything we’ll witness it on a smaller scale seeing Taysom Hill come in as a gadget quarterback. I also believe Sean Payton wouldn’t hesitate for a second and ride the hot hand.
Even though Jameis Winston will most likely be the starter, it’s also his job to lose, and because of what I mentioned above I’m a little hesitant on where I’d be comfortable drafting him in a 2QB/Superflex league. It’s tough because we’ve all witnessed how good for fantasy Jameis Winston can be, but there’s just way too many unknowns surrounding this particular situation and it absolutely warrants a little concern.
Remember last year when Drew Brees went down with an injury and Sean Payton came out and said Jameis Winston will most likely be the starter? A lot of people blew FAAB money on Jameis Winston, only for Taysom Hill to end up starting in Drew Brees’ absence.
Until things become a little more clear I’m targeting Jameis Winston as a value pick this year, assuming his ADP in 2QB/Superflex leagues stays low.
