This 2022 quarterback security article is going to go QB by QB and rate how secure their starting jobs are. I will divide the players into four groups. The first will be Face of the Franchise, players who are likely to start for 3+ more years. The next will be Solid Starters, throwers who are likely to start for 1-2 more years. The third group will be Promising Passers, quarterbacks who are likely to start somewhere next year. The next group is the Speculative Signal-Callers, QBs with a 50/50 chance of being a team’s primary passers next year. And finally, we’ll have Subject to Sacks, guys on organizations likely looking for new talent.
“Why do this?” you may ask. Well, for fantasy reasons, especially for dynasty Superflex leagues, this can be helpful. Guaranteed starting quarterbacks can be tough to get, so it’s important to acquire these assets so you don’t need to continually spend capital and effort trying to acquire new pieces. It also means you don’t need to carry multiple QBs to ensure you have starters at the position. Furthermore, it helps to have an idea of what the market is like to keep an eye on prospects, whether they be veterans or college players entering the draft.
For each section, I will start off with a dynasty fantasy blurb and end off with some notes about specific players from the section. They’re also sorted by their location’s alphabetical order so please do not take these as rankings.
Even if you don’t play fantasy, you may find this article interesting if you want to hear my opinions on the 2022 quarterback security level of various NFL quarterbacks.
Face of the Franchise
We have 11 quarterbacks in this category. If you have two of these, it frees you up to focus on the other positions. If you don’t have any of these guys, I’d definitely try to trade for one of them if you plan on competing.
Kyler Murray – Arizona Cardinals
Lamar Jackson – Baltimore Ravens
Josh Allen – Buffalo Bills
Joe Burrow – Cincinnati Bengals
Dak Prescott – Dallas Cowboys
Aaron Rodgers – Green Bay Packers
Deshaun Watson – Houston Texans
Patrick Mahomes – Kansas City Chiefs
Justin Herbert – Los Angeles Chargers
Matthew Stafford – Los Angeles Rams
Russell Wilson – Seattle Seahawks
Deshaun Watson is the biggest question mark here. If he’s available, he’s a locked-in starter. But his legal troubles may keep him off the field for a bit. Aaron Rodgers is another player of note as there is a very real possibility he’ll be on another team next year.
Solid Starters
We have seven quarterbacks in this category. If one of these is your QB2, I’d say you’re still in a good spot. These guys would also be okay to have as a QB1, but I’d be looking to upgrade if that’s the case.
Trevor Lawrence – Jacksonville Jaguars
Kirk Cousins – Minnesota Vikings
Tua Tagovailoa – Miami Dolphins
Trey Lance – San Francisco 49ers
Mac Jones – New England Patriots
Tom Brady – Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Ryan Tannehill – Tennessee Titans
Three of the guys on this list are mainly here because they are rookie quarterbacks with high draft capital. They haven’t necessarily proven talent-wise they fully belong here, but it’s unlikely a team that spent so much on them will move on from them based on their performance so far. Tom Brady is another interesting name here, but though he is better than some QBs in the previous category, his impending retirement due to age keeps him out of that one.
Promising Passers
We have five guys here. They’re passable as QB2s but I’d look to upgrade if you want to contend.
Matt Ryan – Atlanta Falcons
Justin Fields – Chicago Bears
Carson Wentz – Indianapolis Colts
Derek Carr – Las Vegas Raiders
Zach Wilson – New York Jets
Zach Wilson has draft capital, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they jumped ship on him early. For fantasy reasons, he’s probably worse than many of the QBs with less job security. The other guys have flashed enough to show they could definitely start for multiple years, but I could also see a possibility of them losing their jobs after this upcoming year.
Speculative Signal-Callers
These are good QB3s but if you want more security, you could try to move them before they lose value. On the other hand, these could be good bye-low targets if you want to gamble on them to start next year.
Baker Mayfield – Clevland Browns
Daniel Jones – New York Giants
Jalen Hurts – Philadelphia Eagles
Jimmy Garoppolo – San Francisco 49ers
Despite his lack of job security, Jalen Hurts is a QB1 as long as he’s starting. Jimmy G is unlikely to start much longer in San Fransisco but he’s shown he could be good enough to start somewhere else next year. His main issue throughout his career has been staying healthy.
Subject to Sacks
These are guys I’d be looking to sell while they still have some value unless you need to hold onto them for depth.
Sam Darnold/Cam Newton – Carolina Panthers
Drew Lock/Teddy Bridgewater – Denver Broncos
Jared Goff – Detroit Lions
Davis Mills/Tyrod Taylor – Houston Texans
Jameis Winston/Taysom Hill/Trevor Siemian – New Orleans Saints
Ben Roethlisberger – Pittsburgh Steelers
Ryan Fitzpatrick/Taylor Heinicke – Washington Football Team
I could throw in many other backups like Andy Dalton, Gardner Minshew, and Mitchell Trubisky but that would make this list too long. These all have a slight chance they could start next year and I wouldn’t drop them, but if you can get any decent value for them, I’d go for it. Because of how many quarterbacks are in this category, though the 2022 quarterback class may not be particularly strong, there is a good chance one or two of them walk into starting roles in the fall.
Wrap-Up
Quarterbacks are arguably the most important position in dynasty football leagues where you can start multiple QBs. Of the Superflex positions, they are the only ones where each NFL team usually just starts one per game/season. Due to low supply and high demand, because they are often the highest scoring position, these are pieces to build around. Hopefully, this article on 2022 quarterback security gives you a good overview of the position.
