We’re about 2 months away from the 2023 NFL draft and many dynasty rookie drafts. Some of the most desired assets in dynasty leagues right now are 2023 1st round picks. It can be helpful to get an idea of whom you can target at various points in the first round to see what holes you could possibly fill using those picks. You can check ADP to see who generally goes where, but I will also give you my opinion on how I’d draft 2023 rookie first rounders in Superflex drafts.
1.01 Bijan Robinson
This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, but Bijan Robinson has the highest floor of anyone in the draft (barring injury) and he has the highest ceiling out of non-QBs. He was a stud in college and didn’t disappoint at the combine. He’s already my dynasty RB1 and should stay that way unless he falls out of the first round of the NFL draft.
1.02 CJ Stroud
I think he’s the most NFL-ready QB. I don’t think CJ Stroud has the highest ceiling, but he has the highest floor of the QBs. At the QB position, job security is one of the most important factors in dynasty leagues and I think CJ Stroud has the most. He’s got a big build and he has shown he can make great throws. He hasn’t shown much rushing upside, so you may want to look elsewhere if you want a high ceiling.
1.03 Bryce Young
His only concern is his size. Bryce Young has proven that he’s a great passer with good escapability. He could easily make a case to be the QB1 in the class as well.
1.04 Anthony Richardson
If you watched the NFL combine, you’ll probably have noticed Anthony Richardson was the headliner with his athleticism. He has all the tools to be the best QB but hasn’t proved that he has the decision-making ability and the consistency to do it. I’d say he has the highest ceiling in the class.
1.05 Jahmyr Gibbs
This running back could also be a wide receiver. Jahmyr Gibbs should have the third-down role anywhere he goes. The biggest question is if a team will allow him to be a three-down back. BMI is often indicative of this and his isn’t great, but it’s not bad either. Draft capital is another indicator of this and he is someone who could go in the first round.
1.06 Jaxon Smith-Njigba
I have him in a tier of his own for wide receivers. Jaxon Smith-Njigba was injured for most of this past season, but he had an unbelievable previous season with tough target competition. His ceiling is limited as he mainly has tape in the slot, but in PPR leagues, that could mean he gets tons of receptions.
1.07 Will Levis
He’s my least favourite QB, but he still has a huge ceiling if he can turn into a good QB. Will Levis also has pretty good athleticism and arm strength so if he can turn into a good passer, he would be super valuable. I just don’t have much confidence in this.
1.08 Jordan Addison
There is a decent tier drop here. The combine hurt Jordan Addison as he is quite light and not very fast, but he has shown the ability to separate well, and therefore has a good chance to be a starter.
1.09 Zach Charbonnet
The main knock against the running back is that he stayed for four years in college. However, I would say Zach Charbonnet is the best all-around back after Bijan. He could get day 2 draft capital to lead a backfield right away.
1.10 Zay Flowers
He’s not very big at all, but Zay Flowers is a well-rounded receiver and I think should become a starter somewhere as well.
1.11 Quentin Johnson
He has the biggest ceiling of the WR group. He’s athletic and he’s huge. However, Quentin Johnson has not been a great separator, which could lead to struggles in the NFL. However, he is projected by many to be the first receiver off the board, so he could gain value if he is heavily invested into.
1.12 Michael Mayer
To be honest, there are about 5 other players that could go here. There’s definitely another big tier drop here, but Michael Mayer is a safe pick. He is a great blocker and receiver so could be a week 1 impact starter.
Wrap-Up
The NFL combine just passed and the rookie hype will continue to build. 2023 1sts aren’t cheap, but they could still rise. Also, I am pretty confident that my rankings will change after the NFL draft, but these are my rankings currently with the information we have available to us. I hope my list of 2023 rookie first rounders can give you an idea of how to best see those assets.
