Waiver Wire: Week 4

This week I’ll be taking over the waiver wire from Kevin Wilson, bringing you my best pickups for Week 4. The waiver wire will consist of players and their roster percentage on ESPN.com. I hope this waiver wire list is helpful for everyone and gives you guys some players to keep an eye on.

Quarterback

Sam Darnold-Carolina Panthers (9.1%)

Darnold is coming into Week 4 of the season playing very efficient football. Sounds like another QB who got away from Adam Gase…cough* cough* Ryan Tannehill. The Carolina QB has enjoyed his new home as he is currently ninth in passing yards (888) and has six total TDs (three rushing and three passing). One thing to consider when picking up Darnold on waivers is the teams he’ll be facing in the next three weeks. The Cowboys Week 4 are allowing the second-most passing yards in the league through three weeks, the Vikings (Week 6) are allowing the sixth-most yards passing. The sternest matchup will be the Eagles who have allowed the sixth least passing yards.

Matt Ryan-Atlanta Falcons (31.8%)

Ryan has been having trouble behind a bad offensive line, getting sacked seven times in three games. Otherwise, he’s been efficient with his throws, excluding Week 2, he doesn’t have an interception. Passing for 707 yards and four TDs, Ryan still has QB2 potential and could step up in more ideal matchups. This makes him an excellent pickup in many redraft leagues.

Running Back

Chuba Hubbard-Carolina Panthers (11.3%)

Hubbard stepped right into this Carolina offense and filled the “CMC” role well against the Texans. In his 40 offensive snaps, Hubbard saw 11 carries for 52 yards and five targets that lead to three receptions for 27 yards. With Christian McCaffrey’s status uncertain for week four, Hubbard could be the ideal fill-in for CMC and may have long-term value if McCaffrey’s injury history persists. Finding a running back can be hard during waiver season let alone one that could have as much opportunity as Hubbard. I’d put some FAAB (free agent acquisition budget) into acquiring him if you’re desperate in need of a win or an RB.

Gio Bernard-Tampa Bay Buccaneers (11.9%)

Gio is the running back that has stood out so far for the Bucs. In Week 3 he showed up and caught nine of 10 targets for 51 yards and a TD. Bernard was on the field for 45 percent of the Bucs snaps and looked like the only running back that could be effective in Tampa Bay. He went to work filling the James White-sized void in Tom Brady‘s heart Sunday. Look forward to him having some kind of pass-catching role with this team and he might end up its highest-scoring running back.

Wide Receiver

Hunter Renfrow-Las Vegas Raiders (11.3%)

Any down and Renfrow was a line muttered by the commentary booth on Sunday. There were no truer words through three weeks in the NFL. Renfrow has been averaging seven targets and five receptions in his first three games and has been averaging 12.8 yards/reception. So it’s safe to say the third-year slot receiver out of Clemson has been a “safety net” for Derek Carr. Renfrow is one of the best players available on the wire and should be taken by teams needing guaranteed numbers.

AJ Green-Arizona Cardinals (24.6%)

I have not been a fan of Green for fantasy football since he was in Cincinnati. That being said I can’t deny the 81 percent snap share he has gotten in Arizona. Green has gotten 18 targets this year and outside of Week 3, he had looked pedestrian. Last week Green reeled in five of six targets for 112 yards and looked good against a weak Jaguars secondary. The take-home point for Green is the 18 targets, he’s getting the ball thrown his way consistently and that makes him a solid play week in and week out.

Tight Ends

Dawson Knox-Buffalo Bills (4.4%)

Knox is an interesting player to grab on waivers because he seems very TD-dependent. One thing I like about his prospects going forward is his involvement in the offense has gone up from Week 1 (56 percent) to a Week 2-3 average (81 percent). This gives him more opportunities to end the game with a TD. Knox has also averaged four targets a game and with Josh Allen looking strong on Sunday. We can hope that this is a sign of things to come in this Bills offense. Knox is a nice bye week complement to one of the top five TEs.

Pat Freiermuth– Pittsburgh Steelers (4.5%)

This might be a pick you can make a week in advance, but go get this guy. Freiermuth is waiting his turn patiently, and with unfortunate injuries to Diontae Johnson and JuJu Smith-Schuster. We may get a chance to see more of the rookie TE. Last week he got a season/career-high five targets, as well as catching his first TD. Freiermuth seems like a long-term play, but I wouldn’t blame anyone for going out and nabbing him.

Conclusion

It’s Week 4 and we’re starting to see injuries and unlikely stars rising to the top of the waiver wire. This is one of the first weeks where it starts to get harder to make bids and claims. Either way, this is fantasy football and we shouldn’t be afraid to make mistakes, just take a shot.
