Wait on QB

Most people play in 1QB redraft leagues that have 10-12 teams. Even though the quarterback position is claimed by some to be the most important in sports, I’d argue they are a less valuable one in fantasy. This article will help to explain why to wait on QB.

Positions

Here’s a breakdown of the disparity in performance by position in PPR.

  • QB1: Josh Allen 24.56
  • QB12: Kirk Cousins 19.21
  • RB1: Derrick Henry 24.2
  • RB12: Nick Chubb 15.4
  • RB24: Melvin Gordon III: 12.2
  • WR1: Cooper Kupp 25.9
  • WR12: Mike Evans 16.4
  • WR24: Brandin Cooks 14.5
  • TE1: Mark Andrews 17.7
  • TE12: Kyle Pitts 10.4

Analysis

As you can see, there isn’t a huge difference between the QB1 to the QB12. You can wait until very late in the draft (or even waivers) to get a QB who won’t perform too far behind the QBs being drafted in the first 3 rounds. On the other hand, the top RBs and WRs offer more of a positional advantage while also being a position where multiple players can be started.

Wrap-Up

Am I saying to never draft a QB early? No. If Josh Allen falls to round 5, I would take him there. However, where the top QBs are being taken, I would rather wait on QB and aim for the positional advantage and depth offered by the other positions. Of course, this changes if you play in larger leagues or ones where you can start more than 1 QB.
