2020 NFL Draft Grades – AFC West

Howdy, y’all, Chris Pinto here Lead Fantasy Football Analyst and Writer for Belly Up Sports with my series on division NFL draft grades. The historic 2020 NFL Draft had its share of head-turning trades and selections along with the commissioner’s own sense of humor, which in my mind made him a little more likable. The draft went on without a hitch to our knowledge. The organizations had wants and needs and we watched as it all unfolded. The selections are in the books and we can move forward.

Listed below I have broken down the selections per team and given my overall draft grade for each team’s draft selections. The third installment in my series is the AFC West, home of the Las Vegas Raiders, Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers, and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Las Vegas Raiders (AFC West)

Rd. 1 (#12) – Henry Ruggs III, WR, Alabama
Rd. 1 (#19) – Damon Arnette, CB, Ohio State
Rd. 3 (#80) – Lynn Bowden Jr., RB, Kentucky
Rd. 3 (#81) – Bryan Edwards, WR, South Carolina
Rd. 3 (#100) – Tanner Muse, S, Clemson
Rd. 4 (#109) – John Simpson, OL, Clemson
Rd. 4 (#139) – Amik Robertson, CB, LA Tech

The Las Vegas Raiders with their first draft class definitely made a splash. They took the guys they thought were the best at their respective position, by reaching throughout the draft for prospects. They added speed as is the Raider way, and two athletic corners. My overall take of their draft is disappointed. I hope the Raiders prove me wrong, but I am not a fan of the organization’s selections. From a fantasy aspect, Henry Ruggs III is defiantly a first or second rounder in rookie drafts and has value in Redraft as a strong WR3 with massive upside.

Las Vegas Raiders Draft Grade – C (75)

Denver Broncos (AFC West)

Rd. 1 (#15): WR Jerry Jeudy, Alabama
Rd. 2 (#46): WR KJ Hamler, Penn State
Rd. 3 (#77): CB Michael Ojemudia, Iowa
Rd. 3 (#83): C Lloyd Cushenberry, LSU
Rd. 3 (#95): DL McTelvin Agim, Arkansas
Rd. 4 (#118): TE Albert Okuwuegbunam, Missouri
Rd. 5 (#178): LB Justin Strnad, Wake Forest
Rd. 6 (#181): IOL Netane Muti, Fresno State
Rd. 7 (#252): WR Tyrie Cleveland, Florida
Rd. 7 (#254): Edge Derrek Tuzka, NDSU

The Denver Broncos had the most picks in the AFC West and they used them almost perfectly. They loaded up their defense while adding young weapons for their offense. Overall they rocked the draft and had one of the best classes of the year. From a fantasy aspect, both Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler should be taken in rookie drafts and both have value in redraft. Jerry Jeudy should be a first-round selection in dynasty rookie drafts and mid rounder WR in redraft.

Denver Broncos Draft Grade – A (94)

Los Angeles Chargers (AFC West)

Rd. 1 (#6) – Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon
Rd. 1 (#23) – Kenneth Murray, LB, Oklahoma
Rd. 4 (#112) – Joshua Kelley, RB, UCLA
Rd. 5 (#151) – Joe Reed, WR, Virginia
Rd. 6 (#186) – Alohi Gilman, S, Notre Dame
Rd. 7 (#220) – KJ Hill, WR, Ohio State

The Chargers had like the Raiders a disappointing draft class. They added the future of the franchise with QB Justin Herbert and RB Joshua Kelley. The organization took two flyers in KJ Hill and Joe Reed, we will see how they fare throughout camp. My overall take on the Chargers is not a good one, but right on par with the Raiders. From a fantasy point of view, QB Justin Herbert and RB Joshua Kelley are barely on my radar and will have to show something during Pre Season.

Los Angeles Chargers Draft Grade – C (74)

Kansas City Chiefs (AFC West)

Rd. 1 (#32) – Clyde Edwards-Helaire, RB, LSU
Rd. 2 (#63) – Willie Gay Jr., LB, Mississippi State
Rd. 3 (#96) – Lucas Niang, OL, TCU
Rd. 4 (#138) – L’Jarius Sneed, S, LA Tech
Rd. 5 (#177) – Mike Danna, EDGE, Michigan
Rd. 7 (#238) – Thakarius Keyes, CB, Tulane

The World Champion Kansas City Chiefs surprised the nation by taking RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire with the last pick of the first round. They then proceeded to add at positions they have questions mark on the defensive side of the ball. Overall a very solid draft class with only six picks. From a Fantasy aspect, RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire is the 1.01 in rookie drafts for dynasty leagues and is a top 25 running back for redraft.

Kansas City Chiefs Draft Grade – B+ (88)
