Round One: Jerry Jeudy, 1.09
Tony:
With the 1.09 pick in our rookie draft, Chris Robin, aka @detroitbeastie, took arguably the most NFL ready wideout available, Jerry Jeudy. The stud from Alabama is a top-notch route runner who possesses a 4.45 40 yard dash time. In his final two seasons at Bama, Jeudy produced 145 catches for nearly 2,500 yards and 24 TDs. He also took home the Fred Biletnikoff award in 2018 as the top collegiate WR.
He should step in immediately opposite Courtland Sutton in Denver as their WR2 for second-year QB Drew Lock. For fantasy purposes, he should start as a flex option, perhaps a WR3 at best until he gets his feet wet. Down the line, he possesses WR1 potential. Only time will tell if he can be as productive as another former Bama wideout, Julio Jones.
Round Two: Denzel Mims, 2.09
Nate:
After drafting stud WR Jerry Jeudy in the first round, Chris decided to stack WRs and took Denzel Mims. During his senior season at Baylor, Mims was able to record 66 receptions for 1,020 yards and 12 TDs. Mims is a 6’3” receiver, who ran a 4.38 40 yard dash during the NFL combine. Mims can burn defenders, go up and win the one on one battles, and be a red zone threat. If used and developed correctly, Mims has the potential to be a star WR.
Being on the Jets, Mims has the opportunity to make an instant impact. With Perriman and Crowder filling the WR1 and WR2 roles, Mims slides into the WR3 slot. As a rookie, Mims should see the field plenty, and if you’re in win-now mode in your dynasty league, Denzel Mims has the potential to be a decent fantasy player this season. In terms of the long term, Jeudy and Mims are going to be a lethal WR duo for years. Chris did a great job of getting players who should get a solid amount of playing time this year but are also excellent long term options.
Round Three: Lynn Bowden Jr., 3.09
Kevin:
Chris selected Lynn Bowden Jr. out of the University of Kentucky with his third-round pick. The Las Vegas Raiders selected Bowden Jr. with the 80th overall pick in this year’s draft. Bowden Jr. was a quarterback, running back and wide receiver for the Wildcats and was advertised as a very versatile player coming into the draft. He rushed 185 times for 1,468 yards (7.9 YPC) and caught 30 passes for 348 yards. Bowden also crossed the goal line 14 times last season.
Anyone with that kind of versatility will find a way on the field. Oakland should find plenty of uses for Bowden in their offense. He could line up in the slot, he could take the pitch and throw the ball downfield. Name it, he can play it. That doesn’t even include his ability to play on special teams as a return man. Bowden is being compared to the Saints’ Taysom Hill due to his versatility on the field. Being able to select a player with that kind of capability in the third round of a mock rookie draft is undoubtedly a grand slam of a pick.
Round Four: Jason Huntley, 4.09
Billy:
Welcoming @DetroitBeastie back to Mock Draft Mania, I knew he wouldn’t disappoint. He spent three of his five selections on wide receivers. You know me, I’m an RB guy eight days a week & Chris selected an RB with his fourth-round selection that his hometown Lions drafted in the fifth round of the NFL draft. Jason Huntley is an explosive athlete with some serious return skills. He will make the Lions’ roster with his kick return ability alone. Huntley is a smaller statured back but runs hard through contact. The former New Mexico State Aggie excels catching the ball out of the backfield and should get an opportunity at some point to shine on offense. He’s a home run hitter and a great stash in the dynasty format.
Round Five: K.J. Hill, 5.09
Ryan:
With the 5.09, Chris drafted Los Angeles Charger rookie WR, K.J. Hill. The 6’0″ 195 pound WR had 127 catches for 1,522 yards and 16 TDs his last two years at Ohio State. His stats and measurables don’t jump off the page, but he never posted below a 75 percent catch rate in his four collegiate seasons.
This isn’t a guy to get excited about in year one, but at the 5.09, good luck finding many guys to be excited about late in rookie drafts. However, at this range, Hill offers the potential to be a solid depth player at WR, especially in the future. He could wind up as the WR3 in a Charger offense led by Justin Herbert. His solid hands could translate to acceptable counting stats, as it pertains to your WR depth.
