New Rules: Things Learned from this Week

Every week, we look at some insights that were a result of the weekend games. These insights are the New Rules as we look back and forward from the previous week. The new rules will hopefully help us in our future betting endeavors.

None of these New Rules will discuss the Cardinals vs. Bills game. A game that featured a plethora of bad beats from the “Hail Murray”. These bad beats include the Over being covered on the play (the total was 56.5 and there were 55 points on the board before the play), the Bills money line falling, and the Cardinals (-3) failing to cover with the extra point resulting in zero points (Kyler Murray took a knee). With that in mind, here are the New Rules for the week.

New Rule: Don’t place bets on Thursday Night Football

Unless you have a gambling problem, you shouldn’t be placing bets on Thursday Night Football. This applies to the mid-week MAC games as well. The games that are played on Thursday night are more subject to unpredictability and the unknown. Simply put, the teams playing on Thursday night are playing on five days or rest and it leaves the players and teams unprepared. There is more room for error and thus you should be cautious when placing bets, and avoid Thursday Night Football.

Derrick Henry and the Tennessee Titans were favored against the Colts on Thursday night. Unfortunately, the Titans fell flat on Thursday night and lost 34-17 to the Colts.

New Rule: Anticipate backdoor covers in College Football

College Football betting can be at times more exciting than NFL betting. One of the exciting elements of College Football is the backdoor covers in spreads and point totals. I placed a bet lest week on a ten-point favorite and they didn’t cover the spread until the final minute of the game. Likewise, many Over/Under totals can go over in the final minutes with a few late scores. It’s important to keep in mind when placing bets on College Football games that the programs aren’t just trying to win games, they hope to run up the scores to gain credibility in the rankings and polls. When placing bets on College Football games, be ready to watch the entire game.

New Rule: Never bet the Over in the rain

The past two games in Cleveland have seen rain, wind, and just the worst weather. In both games, the total went Under by a significant number. On Sunday Night Football, the Ravens vs. Patriots total was 43.5, which is a low total. The weather for the game was a borderline hurricane and some of the worst rain of the season, needless to say, the game didn’t reach 43.5 points. Overall, bad weather games don’t cover the Over, especially games in the rain. Sure there have been games that have covered the spread and sure there have been snow bowl games that saw one team run up the score (look up Tom Brady against the Titans in the snow). As someone who likes to bet on the totals, there is no worse feeling than betting the Over on a terrible weather game (by halftime you know you are done for).
