College Football Big Bets: Championship Week

We made it to Championship Week in College Football! This season has been one of the hardest to follow and most complicated, in terms of scheduling. For all the difficulty and doubts of whether there would even be a season, we finally made it to the finish line. The Power Five conferences all have games with playoff implications. The intrigue for any College Football fan is to find out by Saturday Night who makes it to the four-team playoff and who doesn’t. Here are my Big Bets for Championship Week.

Pac 12 Championship: USC (-3) versus Oregon (O/U 64)

USC has been the best Power Five program that nobody is talking about. Clay Helton has put together the best coaching season of his career and Kedon Slovis has emerged as the next great USC quarterback (from a college football standpoint). The Playoff Committee hasn’t been kind to the Trojans. If they defeat Oregon handily, they have a serious argument for making the Playoff. Oregon has the talent to pull off the upset but they have trailed off in recent games and it’s hard to find out what kind of Oregon team we will get this week. USC has played in a lot of close games and should win a close one against Oregon, making enough big plays on defense to decide the game.

Prediction: USC (-3) and Under 64

Big 12 Championship: Oklahoma (-5.5) versus Iowa State (O/U 58.5)

I have been high on Iowa State throughout my Big Bets. The offense is ideal with Brock Purdy making all the right throws, tight end Charlie Kolar being a matchup nightmare, and Breece Hall is running up the stats behind a great run-blocking offensive line. Likewise, for weeks I firmly believed that Oklahoma wasn’t going to lose another game after Spencer Rattler started to heat up and the defense started making big plays in big games. Now we have two good programs in a Big 12 Championship game that should be close and high scoring. Both offenses should play well. While Oklahoma has the championship experience and reputation of owning the Big 12, Iowa State can pull the upset and win with their offense continuing to thrive.

Prediction: Iowa State Money Line and Over 58.5

Big Ten Championship: Ohio State (-20.5) versus Northwestern (O/U 57.5)

The controversial move is in full effect. Ohio State has only played five games this season, yet they were placed in the Big 10 Championship with the hopes that they win and make the playoff. Northwestern is good but nowhere near as talented as Ohio State. Ohio State did play a close game against Indiana but that was an anomaly. As fun as it would be to see Ohio State get upset, expect the Buckeyes to blow out Northwestern with a statement win.

Prediction: Ohio State (-20.5) and Over 57.5

ACC Championship: Clemson (-10) versus Notre Dame (O/U 60)

This is the game of the Championship Week. With both Clemson and Notre Dame in playoff position, the hope is that the game is close and both schools can find a way into the playoff. Notre Dame has been great all season. We saw the proof when they upset Clemson earlier in the year. The problem for the Fighting Irish is that this time Trevor Lawrence will be quarterbacking Clemson. For reference on how bad that is for Notre Dame, Lawrence has only lost one college game in his Clemson career. In addition, this game will not be in South Bend. The game will be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Many expect this game to be close but Clemson should win handily.

Prediction: Clemson (-10) and Over 60

SEC Championship: Alabama (-17.5) versus Florida (O/U 74.5)

Florida took the air out of this game with last week’s upset loss to LSU in “the shoe game”. Alabama has won and covered the spread in every game they have played. Quarterback Mac Jones can win the Heisman with a big game against Florida. The offense should have another great game and Najee Harris should improve his draft stock. While Florida has been playing great offensively and Kyle Trask looks like a pro quarterback, Alabama will be the best defense he faces all season. After last week’s loss to LSU, the Gators look doomed against the Crimson Tide.

Prediction: Alabama (-17.5) and Under 74.5
