Ballers Fantasy Basketball Showcase: Week 1

Round 2

1. Lamarr

Lamarr: Lonzo Ball March 11th against the Kings.”

Jade: “Dammit!”

6th Overall Selection Breakdown

With my second pick, I choose Lonzo of the New Orleans Pelicans. The Pelicans go up against the Sacramento Kings on March 11th, which will be an entertaining game with both teams battling for the eighth seed. Ball is averaging seven assists a game so far this season. With both the Kings and Pelicans wanting to get up and down the court, Ball should have a big assist game, especially with Zion Williamson on the floor catching lobs.

2. Jade

“Rondo against the Nets.”

The game is on March 10th.

7th Overall Selection Breakdown
Rajon Rondo, 7th overall pick in the Ballers Fantasy Basketball Showcase Week 1

Having my next pick sniped out from under me in the very first draft is an experience I’m glad I got out of the way. But I’m not gonna lie, it burned a little bit. Okay, it burned a lot. Fortunately, I have my research on lock and was able to go with my fourth overall pick. Don’t let Rondo’s five assists per game average fool you. Against the Nets, his average is double that over the last three seasons.

3. Chaka

Chaka: I’ll take Kyle Lowery vs. Detroit…give Jade all the feelings… March 14th.

For those of you unfamiliar with Jade’s work, while she has more than a solid handle on the NBA in general, she’s a hardcore Raptors homer.

Jade: “That matchup was my 12th option, believe it or not.

Chaka: “Obviously much higher on my list. lol

8th Overall Selection Breakdown

Pick two was all about making Jade, a.k.a. “She the North”, mad and taking the Raptors point guard before she could take him! Nah, but seriously Kyle Lowry is balling this season, dishing out 7.7 assists per game. The Raptors are 3-0 versus Detroit this season, scoring 125, 112, and 105 points in those games, respectively.

The matchup on March 14th looks ripe for the picking. Lowry already has a 10 assist game versus the Pistons, and with VanVleet struggling with a shoulder injury, Lowry will continue to be the focal point when it comes to playmaking. I see another 10 assist outing, along with Jade kicking herself for letting me steal her point guard.

When asked for a statement on Chaka’s comments, Jade admitted that she loves the nickname, “She the North” and plans to embrace it fully. When asked about the low draft ranking for her starting point guard she had this to say:

“There’s every chance that Fred VanVleet (who is listed day-to-day) is back in the lineup by the time this game is played. Since Lowry has been on the receiving end of assists more often than dropping dimes when playing with Steady Freddy, I passed on Lowry in this week’s matchups.”

4. Randy

Randy: “I’ll take Ja Morant vs the Magic on the 10th.”

Chaka: “Another solid pick.”

Lamarr: “He was my draft board.”

9th Overall Selection Breakdown
Ja Morant, 9th overall pick in the Ballers Fantasy Basketball Showcase Week 1

My plan seemed to crack early in round two as fellow writer Lamarr Fields rudely snatched up my sleeper pick in the round I was targeting him. Facing more adversity, I quickly switched up the game plan. Why not ride with fellow rookie sensation Ja Morant? Against the Magic on March 10th? Run that. With my second-round pick the man from Murray State, potential Rookie of the Year, Ja Morant.

Fellow rookie sensation”? Randy sure is talking a big talk. It’ll be interesting so see if he has the walk to back it up.

5. Houston

Houston: “I’ll take Spencer Dinwiddie vs Golden State on the 12th.”

10th Overall Selection Breakdown
Image result for dinwiddie

Dinwiddie has stepped up for Nets as they are now without Kyrie Irving for the rest of the season. He has taken over the point guard role for the Nets as he is distributing the ball extremely well. Dinwiddie had 13 assists against the Hawks on February 28th and followed that up with 12 assists the following night against the Heat. The Warriors give up 26.0 assists a game, which ranks third-worst in the NBA. Curry is back but that shouldn’t slow down Dinwiddie at all. I would love to see Dinwiddie rack up another double-digit assist game against the Warriors on Thursday night.
