Belly Up Auction Mock: Billy’s Analysis

This Belly Up Fantasy auction mock was my initiation into the auction scene and no one was taking it easy. This was a mock, right guys? I have always avoided leagues with the auction format because I absolutely love the strategy in drafting and the months of preparation that go into it.

We had a standard $200 budget in this auction mock.
Starting: 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 2 FLEX

QB: Kyler Murray $11
RBs: Aaron Jones $44, Clyde Edwards-Helaire $36, Miles Sanders $27
WRs: Tyreek Hill $43, Michael Gallup $9, Jamison Crowder $1, Christian Kirk $1
TE: George Kittle $26

I sat back at the beginning of the auction because early nominations weren’t guys of interest or bidding was steep in a hurry. With my first opportunity to nominate a player, I hadn’t had much action. To get myself in the spending mood I nominated Chiefs rookie RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire with the intention of winning this bidding war. $36 later, CEH was my first ever (mock) acquisition. Maybe I paid up a bit, maybe I didn’t. Either way, you have to like your roster! Wait, am I digging this auction thing? Here’s who else I won for my squad.

Quarterback

Belly Up’s consensus rankings #5 QB Kyler Murray

Arizona Cardinals sophomore QB Kyler Murray was nominated at a time when I had apparently lost my wallet for a while. Luckily, I wasn’t the only one blowing my budget like the next round of stimulus checks just hit the bank. Arizona has added a true #1 WR in DeAndre Hopkins and drafted RB depth in Arizona State’s Eno Benjamin. This offense is tooled to be one of the league’s most potent and Murray is the catalyst. I have Kyler ranked as my 4th overall QB coming into 2020. At an $11 price point, I was elated to add him to my roster.

Running backs

Chiefs’ rookie RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire is bringing Brian Westbrook comparisons.

I spent $107 of my $200 budget on the three-headed monster of Packers’ RB Aaron Jones, Chief’s buzzing rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and Eagle’s lead back Miles Sanders. I’ll be starting all three of them weekly. I am as high on CEH as anyone but this group hinges on him meeting expectations. If he underachieves we could be in trouble keeping a consistent starting lineup. Aaron Jones at $44 is par, slight value considering the inflated investments required for backs with similar ADP. The Eagles received some bad news with the loss of their Pro Bowl RG Brandon Brooks. This directly affects Miles Sanders’ stock in some way. I still don’t have buyer’s remorse with this ceiling at a $27, which is well below market value.

Wide Receivers

New York Jets WR Jamison Crowder.

At first glance, this feels like a top-heavy receiving group. I acquired another piece of the Chief’s offense in Tyreek Hill. Real deal potential to be the #1 overall WR in fantasy for a $43 investment, I’m good with that. Cowboys WR Michael Gallup was a low-end WR2 in 2019 and the Cowboys’ offense is trending way up. Finishing off my $200, I added Jets #1, WR Jamison Crowder, for $1. Crowder is in for a large target share in the Jet’s scheme that saw Jarvis Landry feast on historic targets. Crowder has low-end WR2 upside.

Tight end

There’s a strong case for Kittle to be 2020’s #1 overall tight end. I acquired him in this auction mock for a mere $26.

Kittle comes into 2020 as the focal point of the 49ers passing attack. He was nominated later than guys like Travis Kelce and Mark Andrews. With them going at $31 and $30 respectively, Kittle was a real value at only $26. The Iowa product will offset my lack of higher-end WRs with this particular roster. He’s a set it and forget it player at a meek TE position.
