Fantasy Baseball

Biggest Fantasy Baseball Value Plays

Previously, we looked at the biggest fantasy baseball busts. Now we turn our attention to the biggest fantasy baseball values. It is often that the late gems found in a fantasy draft are the difference between the making of a championship team and an also-ran. These players can absolutely fortify your roster. Don’t wait for the announcement that the baseball season will get underway. Research is half the fun and with everything shut down in sports, what else do we have to do? Especially this Sunday and beyond after the NFL draft. Fantasy drafts can bring some sun into our lives so let’s get busy!

Kevin Newman: Second Base/Shortstop, Pittsburgh Pirates

Is Kevin Newman Good? - Bucs Dugout

Newman had a terrific rookie season last year for the Pirates. He hit .308-12-64 and added 16 stolen bases. He adds versatility to his game as he is also shortstop eligible. In fantasy, that is huge as you will be able to move him around as needed from day to day. Best of all, he will not cost much draft capital, as his 208 average draft position would indicate. My advice is not to wait that long and scoop him up. You will be glad that you did as Newman is definitely one of the biggest fantasy baseball values. You’re welcome!

Lourdes Gurriel, 2B/OF, Toronto Blue Jays

I know I can accomplish a lot': Blue Jays' Lourdes Gurriel Jr ...

Lourdes Gurriel burst onto the scene in a big way last season. He hit .277-20-50 in just 84 games, roughly half of a season. Taken to a full 162 games, that is around 40 home runs and 100 RBIs. Those are off the charts power numbers, especially for a player that qualifies at second base. Yet, he carries a 150 ADP. Did I miss something? There is no way he should be that low. Grab him and enjoy his power and versatility all season long. You will want to give me a high five if you follow this advice if we ever meet, but given the circumstances, bumping elbows will have to do.

David Dahl, Outfielder, Colorado Rockies

Is Rockies' David Dahl on the brink of stardom? His teammates sure ...

Almost any time I have a chance to add a Colorado bat, I say yes, please. Dahl is no exception and his .302-15-61 in 374 at bats last season only hint at what he is capable of. The Rockies might hit Dahl at the top of the lineup and with Blackmon, Story and Arenado coming up behind him, the situation couldn’t be much rosier. Take a hard look at the lineup cards whenever the exhibition season begins again and if he is at the top, don’t hesitate a single second. Go get him! Dahl is definitely one of the biggest fantasy baseball values.

Julio Urias, Pitcher, Los Angeles Dodgers

Dodgers' Julio Urias won't face charges in domestic battery case ...

While starting pitching may well be devalued this season with fewer games and more pitchers on a roster, they are still important. Younger pitchers like Urias is a prime example of one that can overcome those limitations. His 2.49 ERA in 37 games for Los Angeles show he is capable of dominance. The Dodgers might use him out of the pen as well, which will only up his value. Watch what he looks like when the games begin again to ensure that there is no carryover from him beaning Willie Calhoun. If all looks well, add him to the staff. Your friends and fellow league managers will think that you are a genius. Of course, I agree.

Dinelson Lamet, Pitcher, San Diego Padres

Padres Preview: Dinelson Lamet vs. Robbie Ray & the Arizona ...

I wrote previously that Lamet was one of the players to watch this spring. That is absolutely still true. Exactly like Urias, Lamet is a younger pitcher who can bounce back strong after a start. He showed he can blow hitters away last season as his 105 strike outs in only 73 innings clearly demonstrates. He will only get better and you know those K’s will look great on your roster. Don’t pay much attention to his other stats. He has the live arm. No questions, just add him!

Fantasy baseball. Those two words bring a smile to my face. If you have come this far, then that is true of you as well. The Sun will rise and the ball games will begin. Maybe not as soon as we want, but they will begin and we will hear the crack of the bat. Remember these players on draft day and prepare for a playoff run you will not soon forget.
