Bowl Week Betting: Part One

This year has been unlike any other, with a multitude of postponed and canceled games. through the mess, we have reached bowl season and with the bowl games comes the urge to bet on and watch some of the games. Whether or not the bowl games should be played is going to be discussed in the upcoming days. Let’s look at some of the big bowl games from this week until the New Year’s Six bowls. After a disappointing Championship week, let’s hope for a better bowl season and a return to general success.

Liberty versus Coastal Carolina (-7.5)

Both programs have been the unofficial small-school overachievers. Liberty is 9-1 with the coaching performance of the year from head coach Hugh Freeze (whom many thought would become the next Auburn coach). Coastal Carolina meanwhile, has been unbeaten the entire season and has beaten some ranked programs in the process. While Coastal Carolina has played in some close games recently, including a 22-17 nailbiter to BYU and a 42-38 victory to Troy, we can expect them to win by more than a touchdown. Coastal Carolina should be leading most of the game and pull away at the end to win and cover the spread.

Prediction: Coastal Carolina (-7.5)

Miami versus Oklahoma State (-2)

I was genuinely surprised to see that Miami was an underdog considering how great they have played this season. The Hurricanes stumbled in their final game of the regular season against North Carolina but might have more to prove considering the ACC didn’t allow them to face Notre Dame (just a random thing that helped the Fighting Irish’s resume). Oklahoma State might look good considering they are 7-3 but have lost to Texas and Oklahoma with both losses being rather lopsided. Miami might not be as good as Oklahoma but they have the stars to pull this upset.

Prediction: Miami (+2)

Colorado versus Texas (-9.5)

Bowl season: Will Sam Ehlinger and the Longhorns celebrate a dub over the Buffs

Colorado is one of the tricky programs to evaluate since they only played five games and are in the invisible conference of the Pac 12. While we don’t know much about the Buffaloes, the Texas Longhorns have been under the microscope the entire season. Tom Herman has been on the hot seat for Texas and it appeared he saved his job with a few statements wins late in the season. While Herman has been disappointing in the regular season for the ‘Horns, he has been oddly exceptional in bowl games, going 3-0 in the bowl games. This might be the final game in the Sam Ehlinger era and we can expect him to lead Texas to a big victory where they win and cover the spread.

Prediction: Texas (-9.5)

Wake Forest versus Wisconsin (-7)

Both schools are a mess right now. Wake Forest is coming off back-to-back losses including a 24-point defeat to Louisville. Wisconsin lost three games in a row before capping off the season with a 20-17 victory over Minnesota. While Wisconsin’s defense is one of the best in the nation, allowing only 15.7 points per game, the offense is only scoring 22 points per game. Wake Forest might not win this game but they should cover the spread and keep the game close.

Prediction: Wake Forest (+7)

Missouri versus Iowa (-14.5)

It’s hard to take a 14.5 point favorite in a bowl game. However, Iowa has been playing on a completely different level since losing their first two games and might be one of the best in College Football. The Hawkeyes have won their last six games with five of them coming by 14 points or more. Iowa should win and win handily against a .500 Missouri program that honestly shouldn’t be in a bowl game.

Prediction: Iowa (-14.5)

Oklahoma versus Florida (-3)

This is poised to be a great game between two of the top-ranked programs in Oklahoma and Florida. Florida has looked great this season behind the potent offense and quarterback play of Kyle Trask, but they do feel cursed since one of the defenders threw the shoe 20 yards down the field. Oklahoma stumbled early on in the season, losing 2 of their first 3 games. However, the Sooners have looked better than ever with Spencer Rattler emerging as a great quarterback and Alex Grinch building a defense that might be the best one under head coach Lincoln Riley. Oklahoma should win in an offensive shootout.

Prediction: Oklahoma (+3)

Army versus West Virginia (-7.5)

Initially, Tennessee was supposed to be in this bowl game. After a Covid-19 outbreak, the Vols were replaced with the Commander in Chief trophy winners, Army. Army is one of the more surprising schools in College Football this season, led by one of the best defenses in the nation. In addition, Army is one of the rare run-heavy offenses and they shrink many of the games they play in. West Virginia has been one of the inconsistent programs while Army has only lost two games this season. Even if Army doesn’t win this game, they should cover the spread.

Prediction: Army (+7.5)
