Betting, Gambling

Cashing A 500-1 Shot!

What’s your favorite sport to wager on? When you dive into sports betting lessons you learn that longshots aren’t always hard to find. You could bet on things for 2 lifetimes and never cash a 500-1 shot! However, as we introduce more gambling topics on bellyupsports those odds might just change in your favor.

Can You Hit A 500-1 Shot?

Check out the front page of the ESPN website and you’ll see tabs for NFL, NBA, MLB, Soccer, WNBA, NCAAF and then the infamous 3 dots. (Sorry NHL fans but the “world leader” has your league on the same page as Rugby and the NBA’s G League.) Pretty safe to assume that those “front page” sports would comprise most of the sports betting revenue that the South Point Hotel Casino & Spa reports to the Nevada Gaming Control Board as required.

So, you have to ask yourself, what opportunities are there with any of those sports to hit a 500-1 wager?

In all four of the major sports there are only a couple of ways to turn one of your dollars into one of their purple chips. You can hit a 9 or 10 teamer. The payoffs on a big parlay like that depends on the book but if you were to hit all 9 or 10 of your teams on the same ticket you’d be in that odds range. Remember, that every single pick you made would have to win. Possible? Yeah. Probable, well not so much.

Future Bets Sometimes Work But A 500-1 Shot?

The other way to catch a windfall like that would be a future bet. You give someone your money today on a pick in the future and, if it’s a really weird thing, you could find wagers that would pay that much. There’s only one problem with that type of wager and it’s that you might actually have a stronger chance betting the aforementioned 9 or 10 team parlays.

Odds that high on a wager to be decided later are usually on the very worst teams in the league and the real odds are closer to 1,000-1. Does the name Scott Berry ring a bell? He’s the guy that cashed out for $100,000.00 when the St. Louis Blues won their 1st Stanley Cup playoff in team history. They were at the bottom of the standings and he was wagering they’d do something that the team had never accomplished in their history and Scott was only rewarded with odds of 250-1.

Now, 250-1 ain’t bad, it ain’t bad at all, but it’s not 500-1

250-1 Ain’t Bad, But It’s Not 500-1!

Every single time you hear, “And away they go!” or “They’re off!” you’ve got an opportunity to hit a 500-1 shot! Those expressions are what you’ll hear from the announcer when a horse race is starting. Horse racing has wagers called exotics. (Those are wagers that include multiple horses in the same race like exactas, trifectas & superfectas or the winners across a series of races like a Daily Double or Pick 6 ticket.) They’re also one of the few ways you can walk into a sportsbook with $12 and walk out with $1K.

Horse racing has a lot of issues right now. When you’re trying to deal with PETA and your top trainers get busted by the FBI for juicing, well, it’s not a good time for your industry. Still, during the quarantine, the ponies are the only thing really worth betting on. Unless of course you’re a real Belarus Soccer kind of bettor.
