This is the seventh of 32 Ceilings and Floors, covering each NFL team’s QBs, RBs, WRs, and TEs. We continue with the AFC North, and the Cleveland Browns. In case you missed it, here is the breakdown for the Cincinnati Bengals. (Depth Charts courtesy of footballguys.com)
Ceilings and Floors: Quarterback
QB1: Baker Mayfield
CEILING: Mayfield shows the league that year two was an outlier and continues on his trajectory towards stardom. Cleveland’s offense clicks, and Baker throws for 4,200 yards and 37 TDs, leading the Browns to the playoffs.
FLOOR: Baker continues his regression, showing he can’t cut it in this league, and Cleveland fans resign themselves to their perennial fate. 20 TDs, 3100 yards passing.
PREDICTION: Baker has a nice bounce-back year, throwing for 31 TDs and 3,600 yards. The Browns should be good this year, but I am getting a strange feeling of deja vu as I write this.
QB2: Case Keenum
CEILING: Baker goes down, or regresses to a degree that he is no longer safe in the stadium, and Keenum takes over. throwing for 23 TDs and 3.200 yards.
FLOOR: He never plays, because Baker is quite a bit better than him.
PREDICTION: He is only useful as a handcuff for Baker if your QB depth is questionable.
QB3: Garrett Gilbert, QB4: Kevin Davidson
CEILING: They get to join Baker Mayfield in a Progressive commercial… as an extra.
FLOOR: They are forced to clean up after Baker throws his next party in the stadium.
PREDICTION: A whole lot of scout team work.
Ceilings and Floors: Running Back
RB1: Nick Chubb
CEILING: The Cleveland offense doesn’t implode in on itself like a dying star, and Chubb continues his ascension in the ranks of elite RBs, tallying 14 total TDs along with 2,000 total yards.
FLOOR: Cleveland continues to be Cleveland, and Chubb still manages 8 TDs and 900 yards.
PREDICTION: Chubb has produced at least eight TDs in his first two years, and I am expecting 11 TDs and 1,600 total yards. The guy is good even on bad teams.
RB2: Kareem Hunt
CEILING: Hunt thrives as the second option out of the backfield, and a threat in the passing game, and scores 11 total TDs to go along with 1,000 all-purpose yards
FLOOR: Kareem Hunt is caught on film doing something else incredibly stupid and never plays in the NFL again.
PREDICTION: I suspect Hunt’s bad decisions are behind him, and the lesson was learned. I see seven total TDs and 800 total yards.
RB3: Dontrell Hilliard
CEILING: One of the two guys ahead of him goes down, and Hilliard contributes as a replacement, scoring 3 TDs along with 400 total yards.
FLOOR: He falls lower down the depth chart and ends up on someone’s practice squad.
PREDICTION: The other two guys in front of him are way more talented, it’s hard to see many touches coming his way.
RB4: D’Ernest Johnson
CEILING: RB3. 2 TDs, 300 yards.
FLOOR: Cut, and out of the league.
PREDICTION: Out of sight, out of mind, out of all your fantasy rosters.
Ceilings and Floors: Wide Receiver
WR1: Odell Beckham Jr.
CEILING: Odell wins comeback player of the year, scoring 14 TDs to go along with 1,500 yards receiving. His name stays in the headlines for only the right reasons.
FLOOR: For the fourth year in a row, OBJ under-performs. 4 TDs, 800 yards, and weekly headlines where he questions the GM and calls out teammates.
PREDICTION: Odell should bounce back to some degree, I am thinking 8 TDs and 1,200 yards.
WR2: Jarvis Landry
CEILING: Jarvis again puts up the best WR numbers for the Browns, tallying 10 TDs to go along with 1,300 yards, as he and Baker build on some of the chemistry they have developed.
FLOOR: 5 TDs and 1,000 yards. Jarvis disappoints but is still rosterable.
PREDICTION: I liked what I saw last year, and expect a good year for Landry. 9 TDs and 1,200 yards.
WR3: Rashard Higgins
CEILING: 5 TDs and 600 yards as the third receiver in a high-octane offense
FLOOR: He moves down the depth chart, finishing with 1 TD and 55 yards, his stats from last year.
PREDICTION: 3 TDs and 400 yards as a depth piece for Cleveland only. A decent handcuff for the top two.
WR4: Donovan Peoples-Jones
CEILING: Peoples-Jones moves up to WR3, and benefits from the defensive attention given OBJ and Landry, scoring 4 TDs along with 450 yards.
FLOOR: Peoples-Jones is rarely targetted due to better weapons on the team, and finishes the year with under 200 yards receiving.
PREDICTION: There are alot of talented guys in this offense, and I don’t see Peoples-Jones earning many touches over other more productive guys. 1 TD, 300 yards receiving
WR5: Damion Ratley, WR6: KhaDarel Hodge, WR7: Taywan Taylor, WR8: JoJo Natson
CEILING: Any of these guys could have one or two…catches.
FLOOR: These guys never dress, unless Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham leave their jerseys on the Coach Kevin Stefanski’s desk, demanding they dress for the last game of the season.
PREDICTION: Odell isn’t doing that. They aren’t playing.
Ceilings and Floors: Tight End
TE1: Austin Hooper
CEILING: Austin Hooper proves worth the contract Cleveland gives him, and scores 8 TDs along with 1,000 yards receiving, continuing to set career highs in every major category.
FLOOR: Austin Hooper peaked last year. 5 TDs and 600 yards are all Cleveland gets as Hooper struggles adjusting to a new system.
PREDICTION: I see a 6 TD 800 yard season in the future.
TE2: David Njoku
CEILING: Njoku goes wild, angry at the Browns for signing Hooper, he explodes for 8 TDs and 800 yards receiving, pushing Hooper down the depth chart.
FLOOR: Njoku gets mad at Cleveland, doesn’t want to play there anymore, and finishes with disappointing numbers of 2 TDs and 200 yards receiving.
PREDICTION: I was very high on Njoku’s ceiling just last year, but now with Hooper in the mix, I find it hard to project more than 4 TDs and 500 yards without Hooper going down.
TE3: Harrison Bryant
CEILING: Bryant surpasses Njoku for the TE2 job, and produces admirably. 5 TDs and 600 yards.
FLOOR: Bryant plays sparingly due to the more experienced talent above him. 0 TDs and 150 yards.
PREDICTION: Bryant is talented, and he should make it in this league, but short-term, both Njoku and Hooper stand in the way of real playing time.
TE4: Pharaoh Brown, TE5: Stephen Carlson
CEILING: With the amount of talent above them, their ceiling is limited to Special Teams tackles.
FLOOR: They can’t even manage any tackles on Special Teams.
PREDICTION: I am sure at least one of them is going to have at least 1 Special Teams tackle. I think.
