CFL Fantasy Picks – Week 6

Last weekend was Labor Day (or in Canada, Labour Day) Weekend in the Canadian Football League and that meant rivalry weekend. Montreal’s offense got back on track in Ottawa. Winnipeg dominated the Roughriders in Saskatchewan. Hamilton’s defense stole the show in the Tiger-Cats’ home opener against Toronto. Lastly, the Elks didn’t show much rust in their first game in 17 days as they beat the Stampeders in Calgary. This week is the turnaround as we have rematches of many of those games with one exception. Here’s who I have selected for my squad in CFL Fantasy Week 6.

Quarterback: Michael Reilly (BC – $10,410)

Considering their lack of regional rival, the Lions were given a bye week in Week 5. They’ll face visiting Ottawa, who the Lions trounced two weeks ago, 24-12. The RedBlacks also had their hands full against a revitalized Montreal offense. What does that translate to? Points in fantasy. Reilly went 23-of-32 for 301 yards and a touchdown in their first meeting. With the RedBlacks coming to visit BC Place on Friday night, I can see Reilly having gaudier numbers, especially with two weeks off.

Running Back: James Wilder, Jr. (EDM – $8,628)

On the fantasy front, we haven’t seen many noteworthy performances at running back this season. The era of the feature back is not over, though, as Wilder is currently the league’s leader in rushing. Last week was no exception: Wilder had 65 rushing yards on 12 carries as well as 5 receptions for 16 yards and a touchdown. He left early in last week’s Labor Day Classic against Calgary for precautionary members due to breathing problems. Wilder is expected to make this game, though, and against the league’s worst run defense, he should have another good game. I’ll take the chance at starting one running back in CFL Fantasy Week 6 and take Wilder.

Wide Receiver: Eric Rogers (TOR – $9,476)

In last week’s game in Hamilton, the Argonauts’ offense was almost non-existent. The final score didn’t reflect Toronto’s lackluster performance and the offense didn’t come alive until garbage time. That includes Rogers, who caught two receptions on five targets. Those two receptions, though, were touchdowns. Rogers remains the favorite target of quarterback Nick Arbuckle, who was yanked in last week’s loss. But with the game at the friendly confines of BMO Field this Saturday, I expect Rogers to have a better game in CFL Fantasy Week 6.

Wide Receiver: Mike Jones (EDM – $4,844)

The fifth year Canadian receiver had the best game of his career in Calgary last week. White finished with four receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown. A large chunk of those yards were from the 52-yard dagger that sealed the win for the Elks. Quarterback Trevor Harris already has a wealth of receivers at his disposal. Having Jones to be a nice complement to Derel Walker and Greg Ellingson gives the potential for some value points in CFL Fantasy Week 6.

Flex: Tim White (HAM – $2,500)

No, not former WWE referee Tim White. The former Baltimore Raven and New York Jet has had some good fortune as Dane Evans’ favorite target. White had three receptions for 62 yards against Montreal two weeks ago. On Labor Day, White had six receptions on eight targets for 93 yards and a touchdown. This includes a 57-yard touchdown in the third quarter to put the game effectively out of reach. White’s value in CFL Fantasy is on the cheap, which means the potential for points at a good value if you’re looking for a cheap player in Week 6. With Brandon Banks reportedly out in their rematch in Toronto, I believe White will have a bigger presence in Hamilton’s offense.

Defense: BC ($3,200)

Two weeks ago, the Lions traveled to Ottawa and their defense held the RedBlacks to 12 points (all field goals). Despite last week’s performance where they finally broke the 20-point mark against Montreal, Ottawa’s offense has struggled mightily. Now, they face a Lions defense that sacked Matt Nichols twice and forced four turnovers in their loss in Week 4. Ottawa averages only 14 points per game and surrenders nearly four sacks per game. On top of that, the RedBlacks must travel across the country. I’m looking for the Lions to have another dominant performance against the RedBlacks in CFL Fantasy Week 6.

Remaining Cap Space: $942
