Dynasty Quarterback Tiers

One of the big differences between redraft and dynasty leagues is the QB roster spots. Redraft leagues tend to only allow teams to start one QB while it’s quite common in dynasty leagues to be able to start two. Because there can only be a maximum of 32 starting QBs each week, the supply of QBs can run out quickly. In an average 12-team league, there won’t be enough QBs for every team to have two starters and a backup. To help with the valuation of these QBs, I like to use dynasty quarterback tiers.

Quarterbacks will go much earlier in Superflex dynasty startups and carry much more value than they do in 1QB leagues. This is why it’s very important to understand their value. I’ll break them down into tiers and give my brief thoughts as to the reasoning to their place in the rankings.

Tier 1

Josh Allen - Dynasty Quarterback Tiers
Josh Allen – NFL.com

This tier has QBs who have almost no flaws. They’re great for fantasy, they’re great in real life, they’re on great teams, and they should have long careers ahead of them.

Josh Allen

After a rough two years to start his career, Josh Allen has developed into a great passer with a big arm. However, it’s also his rushing upside that puts him at the top.

Patrick Mahomes

There’s no doubt Patrick Mahomes is in the discussion as the best young passer in the league. He’s got a great team, great weapons, and a great arm. He’s also got a decent amount of mobility. Personally, I’d prefer Josh Allen because he scores more points on the ground, but they’re both great options.

Tier 2

Justin Herbert - Dynasty Quarterback Tiers
Justin Herbert – NFL.com

This tier has players that are pretty close to the tier 1 QBs but with some sort of flaw that keeps them out of the top tier.

Justin Herbert

He’s not as good a rusher as Josh Allen and not as good a passer as Patrick Mahomes, but Justin Herbert is young and still developing. He also has some great receiving weapons around him.

Kyler Murray

He may be one of the best rushers in the top two tiers and he’s also a great passer. Whether it’s because of his size or just bad fortune, Kyler Murray has suffered injuries that has reduced his performance. As a 1st round pick in the MLB, the idea that he has baseball to fall back on can make some fantasy managers nervous.

Deshaun Watson

In terms of ability, Deshaun Watson could easily be in the top tier. However, there are many question marks surrounding him that aren’t necessarily related to performance. Due to his legal issues, he could face a suspension. Also, if what he is being accused of is true, such behaviour could resurface and lead to more missed games. We also don’t know how he’ll do after a year away from the game and with his age, it’s possible his rushing has declined. He’s definitely the biggest question mark near the top of this list.

Tier 3

Lamar Jackson - Dynasty Quarterback Tiers
Lamar Jackson – NFL.com

These are the lowest of the QBs I’d be happy with as my starting QB1. They’re young, have job security, and have proven they can put up fantasy points. I’d be happy having any QB with those three qualities.

Lamar Jackson

He’s often unfairly referred to as a running back. Lamar Jackson definitely the best QB on the ground, but he’s more than that. He’s proven that he has become a very competent quarterback. The main question is how he’ll age.

Joe Burrow

He’s one of the biggest risers but I think the hype has gone too far. You can check out an article I wrote on that here. Without the ability to get many rushing yards, his floor and ceiling are capped. Only MVPs like Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers have the ability to dominate in fantasy with air yards alone. Joe Burrow‘s got some of the best young WRs in the league though so he should be set to still be a great dynasty asset for years.

Dak Prescott

His value has been slowly dropping over the years, but Dak Prescott is still a great asset to have right now. Maybe it’s his injuries, but he isn’t running as much as he used to. His defence has also improved and that has limited his garbage time ceiling. Losing a great route runner in Amari Cooper doesn’t help either, but he still has a solid offence around him.

Tier 4

Russell Wilson - Dynasty Quarterback Tiers
Russell Wilson – NFL.com

These are older quarterbacks who are solid fantasy starters, but due to age, either have already shown a limited ceiling or could retire in the near future.

Russell Wilson

He has historically been one of the better fantasy QBs in the league but now in his 30s, Russell Wilson‘s ability to rush may be hampered. There is a lot of upside with his new offence though.

Matthew Stafford

He’s one of the better passers in the league and is set with a great offence. Almost all his yards will be through the air, but Matthew Stafford has the weapons to be successful doing that.

Aaron Rodgers

He would be in tier 2 if it weren’t for his age. His age could lead to retirement or a decline in his ability. With his recent history, I wouldn’t be surprised if Aaron Rodgers retired out of spite if he doesn’t like what his organization is doing. But he could also play for the next 4 years.

Tier 5

Trey Lance - Dynasty Quarterback Tiers
Trey Lance – NFL.com

These quarterbacks are young and have the potential to develop into top tier QBs. However, they have yet to prove it on the NFL field for extended periods of time but they have upside.

Trey Lance

There is very little tape on this guy. Trey Lance could be a terrible NFL QB or he could be the next tier 1 QB with his arm and rushing ability. He does have the draft capital to show he has a decent amount of job security though.

Trevor Lawrence

He was one of the best prospects ever but Trevor Lawrence disappointed his rookie season. The organization has made some drastic changes so we’ll see if that is enough to turn things around for him.

Justin Fields

He was another highly touted prospect but fell further in the NFL draft than many had anticipated. Justin Fields didn’t have a great rookie season but he showed some flashes to show he could jump up a couple of tiers.

Jalen Hurts

Based on fantasy performance, Jalen Hurts could be in tier 3. However, he hasn’t impressed enough at the NFL level to give us an impression of job security for him.

Tua Tagovailoa

He was highly touted in college but hasn’t really lived up to that in the NFL. Tua Tagovailoa has shown some flashes and the team seems committed to him this year but wasn’t looking so promising. I had him in tier 8 but after the improvement on the offensive line combined with the addition of one of the best receivers in the game, I had to bump him up.

Tier 6

Derek Carr - Dynasty Quarterback Tiers
Derek Carr – NFL.com

These are average quarterbacks who have proven they are top-32 QBs but also have shown they don’t have much of a ceiling. They can give you someone to start at the QB spot but you may not be happy about it. If a 2022 rookie QB gets a starting job, I’d likely value them similarly to their colleagues in this tier.

Derek Carr

He can put up a lot of yards and just got Davante Adams. It also looks like a contract extension is looming, which should give Derek Carr some job security.

Mac Jones

He looked great his rookie season. There are questions surrounding whether that’s more because of his ability or the team around him, but it does seem like he could be a franchise quarterback. However, with the way Mac Jones plays, he doesn’t put up many fantasy points.

Kirk Cousins

He has been a pretty solid fantasy QB with some of the better receiving weapons in the league. Kirk Cousins isn’t an exciting fantasy player but he’s solid and should be able to stick around in the league for some time.

Ryan Tannehill

He had a down season after having a great one the year before. The main advantage Ryan Tannehill has over the other QBs in this tier is his ability to add some yards on the ground. Hopefully his team can stay healthy this year.

Matt Ryan

I am much higher on Matt Ryan than most after this disappointing season, but the context is that his offence was terrible. His best receiver was a TE and his next best receiver was an RB. He now has a much better offence around him.

Tier 7

Tom Brady - Dynasty Quarterback Tiers
Tom Brady – NFL.com

This is a special tier for the GOAT.

Tom Brady

He retired, then returned. Many have doubts Tom Brady will play again beyond this season, but that possibility hasn’t been shut down. But as long as he’s playing, he can compete with the tier 2 QBs. If you’re a win-now team and need help at the QB or Superflex spot, trading for Tom Brady is likely the cheapest way to upgrade that spot for this year.

Tier 8

These are young QBs who have some upside, but it’s not looking likely they’ll be great.

Zach Wilson

He was taken 2nd overall in what was supposed to be a great QB class but has been so bad, his backup and his backup’s backup outperformed him by a significant margin. Zach Wilson has the physical traits for fantasy upside, but he might be the worst QB this season.

Carson Wentz

After injuring himself during an MVP-caliber season, Carson Wentz has had a drastic fall. He’s still starting and was decent for fantasy last year, but hasn’t seemed to make decisions on the field that will keep him there for long.

Tier 9

These are QBs who aren’t great for fantasy and have little job security but are currently starters so have some value.

Jared Goff

He’s paid a lot but isn’t living up to his salary. Jared Goff may not start again after this season but he may also get the Hard Knocks bump.

Davis Mills

In a class full our star QBs, Davis Mills has emerged as a decent starter. With the Texans in rebuild mode, they may not be in a rush to move on from him.

Daniel Jones

He hasn’t been great but he is still atop of the depth chart and is athletic as well. I’m not sure how long Daniel Jones will start for but he can be a decent streamer.

Mitchell Trubisky

He may not be great, but Mitchell Trubisky will be starting on a pretty good team and that should be enough to give him a decent amount of value.

Jameis Winston

He might have started the entire year last year if it wasn’t for his injury. Jameis Winston will get a chance to prove himself again but this time, he should have a much better receiver to throw to.

Marcus Mariota

He’ll be in one of the worst situations in the league but as a starter, Marcus Mariota will still have value in 2QB and Superflex leagues.

Tier 10

These are QBs with a chance at starting sometime.

Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Cam Newton, Jimmy Garoppolo, Drew Lock, Gardner Minshew, Tyrod Taylor, Teddy Bridgewater, Andy Dalton, and Geno Smith. Look out for the rookies as well.

Wrap-Up

There is still plenty of time in the offseason left and the draft is yet to come. I am pretty sure my dynasty quarterback tiers will change before week 1. But hopefully, these dynasty quarterback values give you an idea of how to gauge the value of these signal-callers.

One thing to note is that the number of teams in your Superflex league will drastically affect the value of the quarterbacks. If you want to find out more about that, you can check out this article.
