Last week, my friend and I came out with our Rookie Mock Draft 1.0. Now, we are back this week with our rookie mock draft 2.0 edition. We will have one more part of this series post-draft, so stay tuned. We randomized our draft order and I got the 1.06 and @FinalDriveSam got the 1.03. This rookie class is full of studs and each pick in this draft below can be argued as a great value. As we get closer to the draft, I will be putting out more information for you to prepare for your rookie drafts. I hope you enjoy the breakdown of each of our picks below. Who do you think was the steal of the draft?
Make sure to check out Rookie Mock Draft 1.0 and be on the lookout for Rookie Mock Draft 3.0 coming post-draft.
Draft Format
For this mock draft, we used…
Fixed Draft (picks went 1st to 10th each round), Superflex (playing QB in the flex), and full point PPR.
@FDHoustonW Picks
1.06 Jerry Jeudy
Jerry Jeudy is my #2 WR in this draft class and I feel comfortable taking him at 1.06. Jeudy’s play was still impressive in 2019 despite having a less productive year statistically than in 2018. Jeudy is most people’s WR 1 in this rookie class, and I think he is very talented and deserves that respect. Jerry Jeudy is the best route runner in college football. Jeudy also has a deep game and can fly down the sidelines to secure a long catch.
A concern I have with Jeudy is his situation. If he lands in New York with the Jets, I don’t really like that landing spot for him. He will ultimately be the WR1 in New York but will receive double coverage from most defenses because of the lack of his supporting cast. If Jeudy is lucky enough to fall to the 49ers, I would absolutely love this landing spot for him. He would be able to fit into a role alongside Deebo Samuel and George Kittle. Nonetheless, Jeudy is uber-talented and a great fit for owners in the middle of the first round.
2.06 Jordan Love
Sam did have the 6th pick in the Rookie Mock Draft 1.0, and our first and second-round draft picks lined up here. This was a SuperFlex format and for Jordan Love to fall to me here is amazing. Jordan Love is an incoming rookie out of Utah State. He is projected to be a first-round pick and either the third or fourth QB off the board. Love had an impressive 2018 season at Utah State throwing for 3,567 with a 32/6 TD/INT ratio. These numbers are great for Love, but this past Fall Love took a dip in stats. 2019 he finished with 3402 yards and 20/17 TD/INT.
Love has anything you could ask for in a QB. He has accuracy, arm strength, and great size. Love does struggle reading the defense and finds himself throwing into double coverage more often than not. Love’s name is rising up the draft boards. I think he is first-round talent QB and would be surprised to see him get past Pittsburgh in the first or Indianapolis in the second. Love has the tangibles to be a successful starting QB in this league but will be better off sitting Year one.
3.06 Bryan Edwards
I reached for Edwards here at the 3.06 but let me tell you why I did. Bryan Edwards is a big-bodied WR from South Carolina. He is 6’3” 215lbs and can outman anyone lining across from him. His highlights show his insane catch radius and his spectacular one-hand catches. Edwards has pure speed, but where he lacks is footwork and elusiveness. His senior stats at South Carolina 71/816/6, which is good numbers to have because this is what he done in 10 games. Edwards’ rehab is going very well. Edwards would be in contention for a top-five WR in this class if he didn’t have injury concerns.
If Denver doesn’t grab a WR early, I think Edwards would fit the role besides Courtland Sutton. Edwards isn’t going to come at a premium cost as he has been falling to the fourth or fifth round in most mock drafts. With Drew Lock at the helm, Fangio is looking to solidify more playmakers in his offense. Edwards would be able to take attention off of Sutton and is also a great red zone threat. Edwards could be snatched up in the late third to fourth round in dynasty rookie drafts but I paid the price here and spent up to get him.
4.06 Tyler Johnson
I haven’t had much interest in Tyler Johnson as I have been fortunate enough for Claypool to fall to me in the 4th round in most of my mocks. However, Johnson, a senior out of the University of Minnesota, has caught my eye over the last few weeks. Johnson has good size and enough explosiveness to make a difference in the NFL. He has a very natural tendency in his route running and body control to go up and get the ball. He is a good catch radius and will snatch the balls thrown away from his body.
A problem I have with Johnson here is that I don’t think he will ever be an elite WR. However, grabbing an elite player in the fourth or fifth round of a dynasty rookie draft isn’t quite often. I think Tyler Johnson will join the Cleveland Browns and the WR3. After Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, the Browns don’t have much talent in their WR room. I think Johnson would be a good fit for them and would help move the offense. I don’t think he would put up much consistency from week to week at first. However, if OBJ gets shipped, he would see an uptick in production.
5.06 Anthony Gordon
Anthony Gordon was the leader in passing yards in Division 1 football in 2019. At Washington State under Mike Leach, he was pure gun-slinger. I do believe Gordon has what it takes to be a QB in this league. He won’t get many looks until the fifth round. However, I think many teams should take a chance on him. Anthony Gordon has elite arm strength and can put the ball in any spot on the field. Playing under Coach Leach is a great way to boost your stock as a QB.
With this being a Superflex draft, grabbing Anthony Gordon to end my round was worth the risk. Gordon loves to sling the ball around and a team may give him a chance to compete for the starting spot. I think Gordon could be selected by a large variety of teams and it hard to project him. There is a possibility that he could go undrafted, however, I like the risk here. If it doesn’t pan out, I can always drop him. If he leads to the second coming of Minshew Mania, this is a steal.
@FinalDriveSam Picks
1.03 Jonathan Taylor
Jonathan Taylor is the most sought after fantasy player in this year’s rookie draft. He’s combined numbers and workhouse load given to him in college are the two main reasons. The only thing that would sink his stock would be if he was drafted by a team that schemes RBC or he would be the RB2. However, most teams do view him as alpha and those chances are pretty low. For me, I am glad I was able to get Jay with the 1.03.
2.03 Jalen Reagor
Jalen Reagor is one of the most talented WR in this class in my opinion. He’s an overall polished player who can get jump balls, return punts, and making guys miss. His comparison is close to Tyreek Hill of the chiefs. If Reagor can fall to a team with a competent QB he will be an absolute stud. The ideal landing spot for Reagor would be the Saints or the Packers.
3.03 KJ Hamler
Hamler is a very similar prospect to Reagor, but not as a crisp route runner. However, this doesn’t mean he isn’t a good player. Hamler is a deep ball machine and also can return punts. Hamler is more than likely a second-round prospect, but with this virtual draft, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was selected in the first round by the Niners. If I were to rank top WR rookies, Hamler would be the top eight in my opinion and is a steal for me in the third round.
4.03 Antonio Gibson
Grabbing Gibson at the 4.03 is an absolute steal in my mind. Antonio Gibson is a jack of all trade running back out of Memphis and put up some crazy numbers. He averaged 11.2 yards per carry and 19.3 per reception. I know the sample size is relatively small, but his explosiveness is undeniable. I see him in a role similar to what the 49ers are doing where it takes around 10 touches to put up solid fantasy games. Gibson could have slid down the draft boards, but I wanted to make sure I had him.
5.03 Adam Trautman
Adam Trautman was the pick for me in the fifth round and was mainly a pick for TE depth. Adam is a big-bodied TE out of Dayton who would win contested catches in the end one. The tape doesn’t lie how good he looks, but with the mid-major talent, he faced he has something to prove at the next level. Also, his YAC isn’t as impressive as I would like it to be which might be his biggest weakness. But man, this player has some serious potential if he develops properly with the right system. I view this pick has a low-risk high reward and is worth a selection here.
