This weekend is the last one in June. It may be hard to believe, but the fantasy playoffs are only a couple of months in the future. Managers cannot allow nonperforming players to clog their fantasy rosters, especially those in shallow leagues. Even those in larger leagues have important decisions to make. However, there are no issues, as this article will identify the players that need to be on a manager’s fantasy baseball must drop list.
As with any other fantasy article I have written, I expect there will be plenty of discussions and debates coming my way. I heartedly look forward to them.
Josh Rojas, 2B/3B, Arizona Diamondbacks
Without question, this first recommendation is an easy one. Much has gone right for the Diamondbacks so far this year. However, the same can’t be said for Josh Rojas. Simply stated, Rojas must be sent to the waiver jungle as he isn’t even on Arizona’s roster. For those that missed the announcement, the Diamondbacks sent Rojas to the minors. There is no reason to examine his stats since he isn’t even in the major leagues. Drop him. Immediately.
D.J. LeMahieu, 1B/2B/3B, New York Yankees
In the past few weeks, I have both written and spoken on live TV that DJ LeMahieu needs to be shown the door. My article on him can be found here. Even as that is the case, his roster percentage remains right around 50 percent. I must admit, that baffles me. Plainly stated, LeMahieu has not been a good fantasy asset and hasn’t been for some time this season.
Over the past two weeks, for those in points leagues, it must be noted that LeMahieu has had more than two fantasy points just once. He’s had zero or negative points five times. He has driven in or scored a run just one time. He has missed four games. His batting average over the past seven days? How does .083 sound? His season has been downright dreadful.
The answer on this fantasy baseball must drop edition is to do exactly that: drop him. His multi position eligibility can’t save him. No matter what kind or size of league you are in, there has to be someone who can deliver better fantasy numbers than LeMahieu. Stop the headaches and send him away.
Domingo German, SP, New York Yankees
For those who are Yankees fans, yes, another New York player must be featured here. In this case, it is Domingo Germán. Just 14 days ago, German was on top of his game and demonstrated he didn’t need the sticky substance for which he was suspended. In consecutive starts, he held the Dodgers and Red Sox to two runs on 10 hits in 12.2 innings. He also struck out 11 and walked three.
Unfortunately, the bottom collapsed under German after that. In his second try against Boston, they pounded him for seven runs on seven hits in just two innings. He was almost as bad against Seattle, as the Mariners blitzed German for eight runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings. That is a 31.50 ERA and a 21.60 ERA in consecutive games. Could it be any worse than that?
Unbelievably, for those in points leagues, it was worse: -15 points against Boston and -10 points against the Mariners. German has just one chance against Oakland on Wednesday to completely turn things around. Carlos Rodon is close to his season debut. Nestor Cortes has resumed a throwing program. Clarke Schmidt has pitched better than anyone expected. The Yankees will have rotation options soon and, most likely, German won’t be a part of their plans as a starter moving forward.
There has to be a better pitching option out there than German. Go find him. If you can locate a fellow manager that is dazzled because he is a Yankee, trade him. If not, send him to the waiver pit.
Brady Singer, SP, Kansas City Royals
Almost as baffling as German is the fact that Brady Singer is right around 50 percent rostered. Every once in a while, Singer will spring up and deliver a noteworthy start. His performance against Colorado (5.2 shutout innings with five hits, seven strikeouts and no walks) probably inspired many to pick him up. Unfortunately, it all came tumbling down on those who did so.
In three starts since, Singer has allowed 11 earned runs in 16.2 innings. His 11 strikeouts and six walks in that time doesn’t inspire confidence, either. It shouldn’t be too big a surprise to learn that Singer lost all three of those games. Even worse, Singer scored -1, four and five points in those games. It was all nightmares for those in category leagues as well.
Singer’s 6.34 ERA and 1.57 WHIP indicate this has been a lost season for him and those that have him on their fantasy rosters. The Royals are the worst team in all of baseball. There is absolutely no upside in keeping Singer. As with the others on this fantasy baseball must drop list, send him packing.
Rowdy Tellez, 1B/DH, Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers are having a tough season, no question about it. One of the reasons for this, among many, is that Rowdy Tellez‘ season might just be the roughest of them all. Not too long ago, Tellez had a hit in three straight games. In the six games since, however, he has disappeared at the plate, going 1-21, scoring just a single run. In that stretch, Tellez has no homers and no RBIs.
His season stats aren’t much healthier, either, as he is hitting .216-12-31 with a .287/.405 slash line. These dismal numbers are nothing new to Tellez, as he hasn’t hit better than .219 since leaving Milwaukee the first time. Despite this, Tellez is rostered in 55 percent of ESPN leagues and that percentage has only gone down 2.7 percent this month.
If a manager could explain that to me, that would be wonderful, because I simply don’t understand how Tellez is still rostered in that many leagues. In just about every fantasy format, Tellez needs to be shown his way off rosters without delay. There has to be a player that can return better production. Do yourself a favor and seek that player out.
Adam Frazier, 2B/OF, Baltimore Orioles
The last player up for discussion on this fantasy baseball must drop edition is the Orioles’ Adam Frazier. Since representing Pittsburgh at the 2021 All-Star Game, Frazier has wondered the American continent from coast to coast seeking to resurrect his bat. To put it bluntly, Frazier hasn’t found the magic in San Diego, Seattle or Baltimore.
Shortly before the trade deadline in 2021, the Pirates sent Frazier to San Diego. Since then, he hit .267 for the Padres, .238 for the Mariners and .227 so far for the Orioles. Even though he has eight homers on the season, he hasn’t hit one since June 13. After that date, Frazier’s production goes dark, as he only has two RBIs and two runs scored.
For those in points leagues, Frazier has left his managers in a black hole. In his last ten games, he has delivered a grand total of four fantasy points, scoring zero or fewer eight times. To be sure, Frazier’s second base and outfield eligibility would be fantasy gold if he were hitting. Of course, that isn’t the case. There may not be much to search for the wire right now, depending on league size. Even so, bust out the binoculars because there is an asset out there that can easily replace Frazier on the roster.
