As you can well imagine, there aren’t a lot of pitchers that are available to be streamed. However, there are a few. Additionally, some have tough matchups. However, if a manager needs the points, rolling the dice is the only alternative. With that in mind, let’s get a look at what is out there.
Tyler Phillips, Philadelphia Phillies, 3.6% Rostered
It may seem weird to begin with a rookie pitcher with a single win under his belt. However, Tyler Phillips is readily available throughout the fantasy realm. Further, he faces a team that has difficulty hitting on the road in the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates are 19th in home team batting average, 20th in OBP, 24th in SB and 27th in SLG. Even worse, they have the fourth most road strikeouts. Even in Pittsburgh, Phillips should have the upper hand.
As for Phillips himself, he made his first major league start last Saturday against Oakland. Overall, he did well, going 6 innings, allowing four runs on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Best of all, he came away with the win. Truly, four runs in six innings isn’t that impressive until you consider that the next day, Oakland only scored 18 runs.
Most impressive, however, is that in 10 innings, Phillips has yet to walk a batter. Certainly, 10 innings is a small sample size and his minor league numbers aren’t all that noteworthy. Even so, if points are needed to overtake your opponent, Phillips can well suit that need. Anything further is a consideration for another day.
Keider Montero, Detroit Tigers, 0.5% Rostered
Almost as green as Phillips, but not quite, is Keider Montero. As he is less than one percent rostered, many in the fantasy community may not be aware of him. I’m sure that is especially true after he allowed five runs in five innings in his last start. However, take into account that was against the Dodgers. As that is the case, Montero deserves a second look.
Check out his two previous starts. He went 6.1 innings in both, against the Twins and Guardians. In those games, Montero allowed just two runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. In his last four starts, he has faced a murder’s row of sorts: Phillies, Twins, Guardians, Dodgers. After that horror’s lineup, anything would be a breather of sorts for Montero.
Enter the Toronto Blue Jays. Despite their perceived offensive prowess, Toronto only ranks 23rd in home batting, 25th in SLG and 19th in OBP. Amazingly, they are dead last in home runs. With those numbers in mind, if a late boost is needed for a win, Montero gets the vote on this Fantasy Baseball Sunday Streamers edition.
Luis Severino, New York Mets, 25.0% Rostered
While not nearly as available as the previous two, Luis Severino requires a mention for one major reason. On Sunday, he faces the Marlins in Miami. If you get right down to it, is there any other reason required? There are few better matchups for a pitcher, even on the road. At home, Miami’s hitters are a complete disaster. They are 22nd in batting, and it only goes downhill from there. Check this out: 27th in OBP and HRs, and 28th in OBP. They only thing Miami does relatively well is not striking out: 16th.
As for Luis himself, after a lousy start at Pittsburgh, Severino limited Washington to two runs on four hits in 6.1 innings on July 10. For the season, he has a 6-3 record with a 3.78 ERA, a 1,19 WHIP, 81 KS and 37 BBs in 109.2 innings. At a minimum, managers need to check their waiver wire this minute to see if he is present. If so, make the move. There may not be a better fantasy maneuver this entire weekend.
Other Streamers Worth a Look
Brandon Pfaadt, Arizona Diamondbacks, (22.7% rostered), faces the Cubs on Sunday. Wrigley Field has a reputation for producing offense, but Chicago hasn’t taken advantage. As of this writing, they have an average hitting team at home, although they do rank ninth in homers. If available, Pfaadt could give managers that last minute boost they need.
On the other hand, the matchup for Ben Lively (24.1%) isn’t so rosy, as he will take on the Padres in Cleveland. San Diego brings the best road hitting team into the game. However, if all else fails and desperation is approaching, give Lively a shot Sunday.
