The Major League Baseball trade deadline passed on Friday. There are no more rumors of who is getting traded and where they are headed. We know all of their destinations for the rest of this season. With that knowledge, we can take a look and see which players won their trades. That, of course, means these players can help a fantasy roster to the playoffs and beyond. With this fantasy baseball trade winners edition, managers can make the decisions on who to go after, one way or another.
Joey Gallo, OF/ 1B, New York Yankees
There probably isn’t a player that landed in a better situation fantasy wise than Joey Gallo. He goes from one of the worst teams and power parks in baseball to one of the premier launching pads for a left handed hitter. Just before the All-Star break, Gallo was on a run of epic proportions. However, after the break, the entire Ranger team came a complete halt. Galo’s RBIs opportunities went cold.
Now he is on a team that has one of the shortest right field porches in the majors. A ball that would be just a fly ball in Arlington can reach the right field seats in the Bronx. Gallo should be able to significantly boost his 25 home runs in New York. The Yankee offense has been off more than on this season, but Gallo can certainly jump start that. New York also traded for Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo, meaning their offense will be quite better coming down the stretch. A manager will certainly want to see it would take to pry Gallo free and make the deal. Gallo should be an offensive monster in the last two months of the season.
Adam Frazier, 2B/ OF, San Diego Padres
Without doubt, Adam Frazier saw his fantasy prospects soar after he was traded from the Pirates to the Padres. San Diego has one of the most dynamic offenses in baseball and it is much improved now. Frazier comes to the West Coast leading the majors in hits and was the starting second baseman at the All-Star game. Those hits didn’t get Frazier many RBI or scoring chances with the Pirates.
However, that will change big time now. Pair Frazier with Fernando Tatis, Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado and the Padres will have plenty of RBI chances in August and September. Fantasy managers (myself included) should be giddy at the prospect of the numbers that Frazier can put together in this offense. It was predicted that Frazier would slide a bit in the second half. No way does that occur now. His versatility will have him in the lineup daily and he is primed to lead a fantasy team deep into the playoffs. Frazier will be even more relied on now that Tatis is on the injured list with a left shoulder injury.
Danny Duffy, SP, Los Angeles Dodgers
Admittingly, the first two players on the list were pretty easy to identify as winners coming out of the trade deadline. However, the third one may not be so obvious. That player is Danny Duffy. That statement is true even though Duffy is currently out of action with a flexor strain. His return is probably a month away. When that happens, Duffy will be in position to help the Dodgers in many ways.
Duffy has been a starter throughout his career and as he is left handed, that is always a value to a team. Even if he comes out of the bullpen, he will be a valuable piece for the Los Angeles and fantasy teams as well. That is especially true for leagues that includes holds as a counting stat. Duffy could be a real league winner come fantasy playoff time.
Add Duffy to the injured list
In any case, those managers that have an injury slot open would be prudent in adding Duffy to their team. Pitching for a team like the Dodgers will really help his stats. Of course, the Dodgers made bigger moves, trading for Max Scherzer and Trea Turner. However, not a single fantasy manager will trade those two guys. Duffy, on the other hand, can be claimed off waivers in most leagues. That alone is reason enough to include him on this fantasy baseball trade winners edition.
Starling Marte, OF, Oakland A’s
Another player going from the bottom of the standings to a big time pennant race is Starling Marte. He has pretty much been the invisible man down in Miami, but that ended when he was traded to Oakland. Fantasy managers should be beside themselves with the prospect of what Marte can do in that offense. He provided an early glimpse with a hit, walk, stolen base and a run in his first game in an A’s uniform.
Marte hit .306 with the Marlins but only had 25 RBIs. He did, however, have 22 steals and that kind of speed will play well in Oakland. All of his counting stats will only get better playing up by the bay. His fantasy managers will get a big boost down the stretch. Those that don’t have that luxury should see what kind of a deal that it would take to acquire him. Steals in the game today are a rare commodity and Marte will provide that. He definitely belongs on this fantasy baseball trade winners edition.
Eduardo Escobar, Infielder, Milwaukee Brewers
No question, Eduardo Escobar has to feel like he went from the outhouse to the mansion this past week. He goes from a team that set the major league record for consecutive road losses to a first place team. Escobar leaves Arizona with 22 home runs and 65 RBIs. He was the Diamondbacks’ lone All-Star this season.
Escobar hit only .232 in his last 15 desert games, but had four homers and 10 RBIs in that span. His hitting should increase dramatically now that he is surrounded by a much better team in Milwaukee. His bat and his versatility will keep him in the lineup the next two months. Marte will be a valuable member of a fantasy team down the stretch. If he isn’t a part of your team, get on the horn to the manager that does have him. It would certainly be a discussion worth having.
Tyler Anderson, SP, Seattle Mariners
Another former Pirate, Tyler Anderson, can also be designated a trade deadline winner. Anderson goes from a team deeply buried in the National League Central to a team fighting for its first playoff appearance in 20 years. He was pitching decent enough in Pittsburgh, but just couldn’t catch a break. Anderson was 5-8 with a 4.35 ERA on the season, but his ERA in July was 3.09.
In his first appearance as a Mariner on Saturday, Anderson pitched into the sixth inning, just as he had done in seven of his last nine Pirate starts. He allowed three runs on six hits, striking out three and walking none. There is every reason to expect such performances will be the norm for Anderson down the stretch. That alone will make Anderson one of the fantasy baseball trade winners.
Ian Kennedy, RP, Philadelphia Phillies
There was a time when Ian Kennedy was leading the American League in saves this season. That was before the roof caved in on the Texas Rangers. Fresh off a 13 game losing streak, there just weren’t many save opportunities of late for Kennedy. That should no longer be a concern after Kennedy and Kyle Gibson were traded to Philadelphia. The Phillies are not having the greatest of seasons, either, but are in the pennant race as there is no dominant team in the N.L. East.
Philadelphia’s bullpen is one of the main reasons the team isn’t in a better place in the standings than it is. Coming into Monday, the Phillies have a dreadful 4.56 bullpen ERA and had blown 23 saves on the season. Kennedy looks to change all of that. At the time of the trade, Kennedy had a 2.97 ERA and 16 saves in 17 chances. He hadn’t allowed a run the entire month of July. Don’t let the fact that Kennedy gave up two runs in his Philadelphia debut on Sunday turn you off to him. He will be an excellent closer for the Phillies and also would be on any fantasy team.
