As always, debate and discussion are strongly encouraged. Additionally, as has been the case for the entire fantasy season, roster percentages are provided by ESPN.
Braxton Garrett, Miami Marlins, 16% Rostered
Without question, one of the top streaming candidates for this weekend has to be Braxton Garrett. In fact, Garrett is making a strong case for a permanent spot on many fantasy rosters. This is the second time he will be featured in one of my articles. His first appearance can be found here. His stats look even better now than they did in that article based off a strong performance in his last start.
In that start, against the White Sox on the road, Garrett pitched 5.1 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just three hits and single walk. Even more impressively, he struck out nine, his season high. In his last six starts, Garrett has allowed more than two runs only once.
However, as has been stated many times in these articles, the schedule also provides a significant boost for Garrett’s prospects. On Saturday, he will face the Washington Nationals, one of the worst hitting teams in baseball. The games is on the road, but that should in no way dissuade a manager from starting Garrett. He is, no doubt, at the top of the streaming options list for this weekend.
Griffin Canning, Los Angeles Angels, 8.8% Rostered
When it comes to pitchers hiding in the weeds, there are few better at it than Griffin Canning. That is completely understandable given how he didn’t pitch last season. However, since he faced Houston on May 10th and gave up five runs, Canning has started five games. He has not allowed more than three runs in any of them. He has won his last three decisions and is 5-2 on the season.
Perhaps best of all, Canning has given up a single walk in his last three starts combined. His SO% is similar to what it was in 2021, but his HR%, BB% BA, OPS, and SLG% are all improved. The Angels just finishing having to face the big bats of Texas and Canning didn’t have to face anyone in that lineup.
Even though the Los Angeles is still on the road, Canning will take the mound Saturday against the Royals. Kansas City as an opponent has appeared many times in these articles and for good reason. The MLB hitting stats website fully details their lack of ability to swing the bat. If Garrett above is not available, Canning certainly fits the bill of fantasy baseball weekend streamers.
Louie Varland, Minnesota Twins, 9% Rostered
Over his past two starts, it looks like there would be no way that Louie Varland would receive a recommendation this weekend. Nevertheless, that’s exactly what is going to happen. In truth, Varland has been extremely unlucky. The last two times he has taken the mound, he has had to face two high flying offenses in their home parks.
Those teams were Toronto and Tampa Bay. Of course, everyone realizes that the Rays are the number one hitting team in the league. The Blue Jays aren’t far behind, as they currently rank number seven. No one would be surprised to learn that Varland allowed them 11 earned runs on 12 hits in 10.2 innings. Even so, Varland’s season has not been a disaster.
As a matter of fact, in his five prior starts covering 35 innings, he gave up nine runs on 26 hits, while striking out 25 and walking only five. No question, fantasy managers can live with stats like that. Most impressive of all was Varland shutting out the Astros in Houston through seven innings.
The Best Reason for Rostering Varland
Looking over the schedule, notice that the Twins and Varland host the Tigers on Sunday. Detroit has been named many times in these articles and have earned the right to be included here once again. There is only one team in MLB that is worse at hitting than Detroit. Look for Varland to bounce back in a big way. Make sure to have him on the roster before someone else in your league figures that out first.
Desperate Times Call for Desperate Measures
Just know that there is no way that I am openly advocating for the pickup of Patrick Corbin. He has been rocked like few pitchers in more than one game this season. However, in ten of his last 11 starts, he has given up three or fewer runs. He faces the Marlins on Sunday, who will bring in the 20th best hitting team into Washington.
If a miracle is needed for a last-minute victory, Corbin is only 2.4 percent rostered. Give him a try if you can stomach it and then immediately cast him back into the waiver pool once the games begin on Sunday.
