The NBA season now enters its fourth week. There is now enough evidence out there so managers can make quality decisions on which players should, and should not, be on their rosters. Always willing to help out, Belly Up Sports provides this fantasy basketball outhouse edition to identify those players that can be safely discarded to the waiver wire, or outhouse, if you will. Let us jump right in to the deep end, shall we?
Robert Covington, PF/SF, Portland Trail Blazers
The original member of the outhouse brigade, Robert Covington has had a very disappointing beginning to his Portland tenure. Nine games in, Covington has not lived up to the billing of a front court starter he was supposed to be this year. He is averaging 6.6 PPG, 5.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists on 30.3 minutes per game.
Those stats aren’t near good enough for a player on a roster in 76.2% of leagues. In fact, Covington has scored in double figures in just one game in 2021. Owners will have to make a decision soon on the right time to cut him loose. Just to be clear, that moment is rapidly approaching.
Paul Milsap, PF/C, Denver Nuggets
Those managers looking for a veteran boost on their rosters have been greatly dismayed by the play of Paul Milsap. So far this season, Milsap is averaging just 11.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 24.7 minutes. The points and assists are the lowest Milsap has averaged since his second NBA season. The rebounds are a career low.
Obviously, Milsap has been an excellent player for many years in the league, but those days are long over. There is no place on a current fantasy roster for Milsap. If he is on your team, flush him now and find a better option. Certainly, there is one on the wire to be found.
Al Horford, PF/C, Oklahoma City Thunder
There have been few players that have gone from all-star caliber to after thought quicker than Al Horford. He is averaging 9.7 PPG, 7.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists. Horford’s playing time is down to 26.7 minutes a game in his first season in Oklahoma. On Monday and Wednesday of last week, Horford scored 10 points. TOTAL.
Even so, he is owned in a hard to understand 76.9% of leagues. That needs to change, immediately. There are other players on the Oklahoma City team that are more deserving of a place on fantasy rosters than Horford. Don’t make the mistake of hanging on too long. Replace him sooner than later.
Jeff Teague, PG, Boston Celtics
The beginning of his time with the Boston Celtics has not gone well for Jeff Teague. Thus far, he is averaging just 7.0 PPG, 2.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists in just 19.9 minutes per night. True, he has had some injury issues. However, even when Teague has been healthy, the stats just aren’t there for him. In fact, Teague has scored just six points since the calendar flipped.
Now comes the news that at least the game between the Celtics and Bulls game on Tuesday will be postponed because of the NBA’s health and safety protocols. And that is after the Celtic-Heat game was postponed on Sunday. It is unknown if the Tuesday game will be the only one that will impact Boston. At the very least, Teague will be sitting on benches for a few days. Don’t let it be your team this situation affects. Replace Teague without delay, if not sooner.
Delon Wright, SG/PG, Detroit Pistons
Delon Wright is another player that fortune has not smiled on since the new season began. Wright is only averaging 8.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game for the Pistons. Wright scored 16 against Phoenix the other night, but other than that, he has disappeared almost entirely since the new year began.
For the other three games of 2021, Wright scored a grand total of 15 points, including just six against the Jazz at home Sunday. Of course, that is way too few points to have him on a healthy fantasy team. Wave him goodbye forever and pick up a player that has much more consistency. Even in the largest of leagues, they are out there.
Bismack Biyombo, C, Charlotte Hornets
Without question, this fantasy basketball outhouse edition has included quite a few big men that need to be trimmed from rosters. Unfortunately, Bismack Biyombo must also be included on the list. Biyombo is averaging 8.3 PPG, 7.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 26.8 minutes per game for the Hornets. The rebounds are nice, but the other stats are just not enough to compensate.
A more well rounded player that can provide consistent stats is what the doctor ordered. Unfortunately, Biyombo does not fill that prescription. Take the coupon from Good RX and find another player to round out your fantasy bench.
Dwight Howard, C, Philadelphia 76ers
Yes, the former superman himself finds himself looking for a happy roster home this season. Unfortunately, few managers should welcome him in out of the rain. Dwight Howard just hasn’t found any kind of a rhythm so far in his first Philadelphia season. In just 14.6 minutes a night, Howard is averaging 6.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and a minuscule 0.7 assists per game.
This looks like the second straight season that Howard’s scoring average will fall well below double digits. Additionally, his other statistics are also far under his career norms as well. For the sake of your fantasy season, don’t allow Howard to clog your roster for another second. Show him the door and make sure to keep the key.
Thanks all for joining me for this fantasy basketball outhouse edition! As always, feel free to leave a comment or suggestion on the players that should be added to or removed from the list. I welcome input. Of course, if the above players get dropped, they need to be replaced. Fortunately, Bobby has just what you need by clicking here.
