Fantasy Basketball Waiver Wire: Week 4

Another week of injuries has resulted in another week of more sneaky waiver wire pickups. Besides the injuries, Covid has also taken effect. A couple of teams are now relying on role players to play heavy minutes. With so many players out, now is the chance for backups, rookies, and returning starters to make their mark in the fantasy basketball world. The following list is mostly for teams that have room on their bench to add players that have the opportunity to produce for the week. As always, do not feel obligated to pick up anyone if you do not have room on your roster.

I will be providing weekly waiver wire pickup suggestions that are mainly for nine-category leagues. The picks are based on players being rostered in less than 30-percent of fantasy basketball teams. Here are some waiver wire pickups for Week 4.

PG/SG Tyrese Maxey (@ATL, MIA, MIA, @PHX)

Tyrone Maxey won’t get this opportunity very often, but he did make the most of his first start. Maxey exploded with 39 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals while shooting 54.4-percent from the field. The Sixers will possibly still be without a few of their players for some games this week because of a mixture of injuries and COVID protocols. Maxey could have an extended run again to build on his last performance. He’s worth a speculative add for the week until the Sixers have their other players return to the team.

PG Cole Anthony (MIL, @BOS, @BOS, @BKN)

Cole Anthony finally has the opportunity to show what he can do as the starting point guard. Unfortunately, Markelle Fultz is now out for the year with a torn ACL. Anthony has not thrived yet as the starter, but it doesn’t hurt to add him if you have roster space to do so. I believe he will play better. Starting point guard is the hardest position to learn and takes a little time to start producing. I would mark him as a speculative add and see if he improves his numbers in this upcoming week. The Magic have four games this week, which should help him.

SG/SF Kevin Huerter (PHI, @PHX, @UTAH, @POR)

Bogdan Bogdanovic has been diagnosed with a fractured knee cap so now it’s Huerter’s time to shine. Kevin Huerter has averaged 13.0 points, 5.0 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 3 three-pointers made even before the news of the injury. Those numbers have the possibility to increase with Bogdanovic now out. Hawks will need more shooting and Huerter has the ability to knock down shots. The Hawks have four games this week, where he can mostly help in points, three’s, and assists.

PF/C Kelly Olynyk (@PHI, @PHI, DET)

Kelly Olynyk is now the starting power forward for the Heat, where he thrived in the role before in last year’s bubble. This past week Olynyk averaged 16.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4 three-pointers made, 2 assists while shooting 58-percent from the field. Although he only has three games this upcoming week, it may be a good time to scoop him up while he is still on plenty of waiver wires. The Heat share the ball well enough where Kelly will at least be able to put up multiple three-pointers made and rebound at a decent rate.

PF/C Daniel Theis (@CHI, ORL, ORL, @NY)

The Celtics, like the Sixers, have plenty of roster problems at the moment. Mostly all of Boston’s main rotational players are still in COVID protocol leaving them with only eight healthy bodies. This means Daniel Theis will have to shoulder as much as he can for the week as basically one of the only bigs on the roster. We don’t know for sure when the team will be full again, and so someone will have to step up and I believe it will be Theis. I also like Payton Pritchard as a sneaky deep sleeper pickup considering the Celtics have four games this week.
