We are now rolling into Week 6 of this unusual 2021 season. Injuries once again are piling up, but on the flip side, players are also coming back from injury. Along with injuries and postponed games, NBA teams have also now started resting players. This season can be a major headache on deciding who to pick up.
How do we deal with all of these scheduling issues in fantasy basketball?
One good strategy is to pick up players that fit your schedule. Nothing is worse than having to pick 10 out of an available 15 players to play on Monday but having no one for Tuesday. Use your waiver picks wisely, especially if you have a weekly add limit. Players that have more games will be more valuable this year, considering the uncertainty of the schedule. Some of the names on this list do only play three games this week but are here to provide long-term value. I will try to avoid any players that have games that have been postponed this upcoming week.
As always, do not feel obligated to pick up anyone if you do not have room on your roster. I will be providing weekly waiver wire pickup suggestions that are mainly for nine-category leagues. The picks are based on players being rostered in less than 30-percent of fantasy basketball teams. Here are some waiver wire pickups for Week 6.
PG Monte Morris, DEN (@DAL, @MIA, @SA, UTAH)
The Nuggets got Michael Porter Jr. back, and the team seems to almost be at full strength. Even so, Monte Morris has slowly become a reliable fantasy sixth man for them. He has a defined role, and his production will most likely stay the same if he continues to get decent minutes off of the bench. This past week Morris averaged 15 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1.7 three-pointers made while shooting 55-percent from the field. If you are in need of points and decent shooting percentages, you can do a whole lot worse than Morris. The Nuggets also play four games this week.
SG/SF Jeremy Lamb / PG T.J. McConnell, IND (TOR, @CHA, @CHA, PHI)
As told in the previous Week 5 article, the Pacers are still looking for someone to duplicate the production that would have been provided by T.J. Warren and Caris LeVert. This past week on limited minutes, Lamb averaged 15 points, 4 rebounds, 1.5 three-pointers made while shooting 52-percent from the field. He might still be coming off the bench, but I would not bet against him taking the starting shooting guard spot once he gets back into the swing of things after returning from injury.
While Lamb contributes to plenty of scoring categories, another sneaky Pacers pickup would be their backup point guard, T.J. McConnell. T.J.’s value comes from his ability to provide helpful production in two major categories: assists and steals. Over the past 5 games, T.J. has averaged 6.6 assists and 2.4 steals per game. If you need help in those categories, he might help you become a weekly winner. The Pacers play four games this week, so both Lamb and McConnell are worth rostering.
SG/SF Rodney Hood, POR (OKC, @HOU, @CHI)
The Blazers can’t catch a break. They are trying to feel out their roster after losing Collins, Nurkic, and now CJ McCollum due to injury. The next starter up is Rodney Hood. He has had one good game and one dud. This may be just a speculative add since the Blazers only have three games this week. But I still believe Hood, over all the other Blazer wings, will provide the most value in category leagues until CJ gets back. In the two games Hood started this past week, he averaged 14 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals while shooting 60-percent from the field.
SG/SF Norman Powell, TOR (@IND, MIL, SAC, ORL)
Last season Norman Powell was on a tear leading to be one of the best sixth men in the league. He started the year off slow and now is picking up his production again. Powell has a decent possibility to start more games this week if Lowry continues to sit out until he is fully healthy. These past two games as a starter, Powell averaged 21.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2.5 three-pointers made while shooting 47-percent from the field. He’ll be able to provide an ample amount of scoring, with Toronto having four games this upcoming week.
PF/C Isaiah Roby, OKC (@POR, @PHX, BKN)
Isaiah Roby was seen as an afterthought when he arrived in Oklahoma City, but now he gets his opportunity to start and produce. Al Horford is still away from the team without a clear return date set. Even when Horford gets back, I foresee the Thunder leaning towards their youth movement and giving Roby enough playing time to produce. As a starter these past five games, Roby has averaged 10.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3 assists. His role can still increase and is worth a roster spot until we know when Horford will be back with the team.
C Robin Lopez, WAS (@HOU, @NO, ATL, BKN)
Thomas Bryant suffered a season-ending injury a couple of weeks ago, but the Wizards have had to postpone a few games because of COVID protocol. Now they will finally be playing four games this week. The next best big man who gets the start is Robin Lopez. In the two previous games Lopez has started, he averaged 9.5 points, 9 rebounds, 3.5 assists while shooting 73% from the field. Lopez is currently the best big on the roster and should continue to start until the Wizards decide to trade for another big man. Lopez can provide decent value in points, rebounds, assists, and field goal percentage considering the Wizards play four games this week.
