Keon Coleman, Rookie WR, Buffalo Bills
Certainly, everyone that follows fantasy football is aware who Keon Coleman is. Coleman is the rookie wide receiver that the Buffalo Bills selected 33rd overall in last month’s NFL draft. Unlike many of the receivers in the draft, Coleman has a combination of both size and speed. At 6’3″ and 213 pounds, he is difficult for defenders to take down.
As for speed, look beyond his pedestrian 4.61 40-yard dash time. During the NFL combine, Coleman achieved a top speed of 20.36 miles per hour. In NFL circles, that was an eye opener, as it was the fastest the combine had seen in two years. Further, at the line of scrimmage, Coleman has a quick burst, meaning he can line up in the slot or on the outside.
In addition to his speed, Coleman’s blend of size and athleticism leads to big plays in the passing game. Additionally, this past year, he was a First Team All-ACC player as a receiver, special teamer and all-purpose player. Obviously, there have been some great players at Florida State. Even so, Coleman was the first Seminole to be selected for all three awards in the same season. His ability in the return game adds a fantasy element that few other rookie WRs can come close to matching.
Wait! The Best News is Yet to Come
As good as Coleman can be, there is an element that must be noted on this Fantasy Football Keon Coleman edition. This element has nothing to do with Coleman, but it will elevate his fantasy value significantly. Of course, I am referring to who will be his quarterback: Josh Allen. After all, Allen only threw for 4,306 yards and 29 TDs in 2023. It was the first time in his last four seasons that Allen didn’t throw for at least 35 touchdowns. Further, he has bested 4,282 passing yards every year since 2020.
Eight of those TDs went to Stefon Diggs, who is now in Houston. Another seven went to Gabe Davis, now in Jacksonville. Significantly, those two had 241 targets between them. Obviously, those passes will have to go elsewhere next season. Coleman’s biggest competition in the WR room will most likely come from Khalil Shakir, who caught 39 passes for 611 yards and two TDs.
More than likely, tight end Dalton Kincaid will receive the largest target share on the team. Even if that is true, Allen will need to throw to his wide receivers. There is every reason to expect Coleman to be right at the top of that list come season’s end.
Another Reason Coleman Has Value
Finally, there is another Coleman aspect that can provide dynasty value. Namely, if a manager drafting at the top of the first round needs a quarterback, he/she can safely do so. The reason? Passing on one of the top three rookie receivers won’t sting quite so bad when Coleman is added to the roster. Quite possibly, Coleman will add just as much production at a much better value than the other receivers. Without question, it is a scenario that fantasy managers should give a lot of thought about come draft day.
