As this is the first of an on-going series please comment and let us know who we missed! Next, without further ado here are the inaugural big headliners of the week for you in quick, concise excerpts.
Gun Slinger Headliners:
Drew Brees:
Quarterback Drew Brees broke the news of his post-football career this week. He will be signing with NBC Sports over ESPN. The wording of his contract is very interesting as he is to start his next chapter after he retires from the game of football. Interestingly enough Brees just signed a 2-year $50 million extension with the Saints. As we will have to wait and see what Brees has in store for us, this season you can fire him up as a top 10 quarterback. In conclusion, Brees averaged 20.8 fantasy points per game and will be a QB 1 option for Fantasy Football.
Andy Dalton:
Quarterback Andy Dalton was very vocal about the Bengals organization last season because they benched him after the trade deadline. Since then the team and Dalton’s agent have actively looking for a new landing spot for the former T.C.U. Horn Frog. In an interview this week, Dalton expressed there was a multitude of scenarios including staying with the Bengals. In conclusion, Dalton won’t be on the fantasy radar with all of his uncertainty.
Tyrod Taylor:
Journeyman quarterback Tyrod Taylor signed his contract to be a Charger in the offseason and looks to take the reins this season. In an interview this week Head Coach Anthony Lynn expressed extreme confidence in Taylor seeing him as a possible candidate to manage the offense for a couple of seasons. This bodes well for fantasy managers who will wait on a quarterback in their drafts. Taylor has already showcased his skills as a dual-threat; because of this, he was labeled the Cheat Code. In conclusion sign Tyrod as a QB 2 with massive upside.
Wonderlic Scores for Rookie QBs:
- Justin Herbert – 39
- Jake Fromm – 35
- Joe Burrow – 34
- Jake Luton – 33
- Brian Lewerke – 30
- Jordan Love – 27
- Anthony Gordon – 25
- Jacob Eason – 23
- James Morgan – 23
- Jalen Hurts – 21
- Tua Tagovailoa – 19
Pass Catcher Headliners:
Trey Burton:
Former pass catcher for the Bears, Trey Burton was released from the organization this week. Burton is recovering from a sports hernia injury and looks to find a new home soon. The Bears owe him $4 million from his 2017 contract but signed Jimmy Graham making this decision to release Burton easy. In conclusion, like the Bears, I don’t want to have Burton on my roster so you may label him as a TE 3 where ever he lands.
Odell Beckham Jr.
Browns and former L.S.U. playmaker Odell Beckham Jr. almost broke Twitter this week as rumors swirled. It was reported that the Browns were looking to trade Beckham Jr. to the Vikings. The Browns front office shut down those rumors quickly. As the saga continues today it has been said that the organization will likely move on from him, as the chemistry between quarterback and receiver does not mix. In conclusion, if the Browns do indeed move from Beckham Jr. he will be a low-end WR 1 where ever he lands.
Will Fuller V
Houston Texans speedster Will Fuller V is recovering from core muscle surgery and is said to be doing great! In an interview this week Bill O’Brien said he expects Fuller V to be healthy and ready to fly this season. Because of his unique speed and connection with Watson, if the former Notre Dame standout can stay healthy you can fire him up in your starting lineups, In conclusion, Will Fuller V if he is on the field, he will be a high-end WR 2 with elite upside.
Rushing Headliners:
Matt Breida:
Rumors have spread like wildfire that the 49ers organization would not bring back Matt Breida. This week he signed his tender, a $3.3 million one-year deal. He adds to the crowded backfield of Coleman, Mostert, and McKinnon. Last season the running back had flashes of great fantasy value, because of this he will be a hit or miss candidate. Breida would be a target for late-round picks as no one knows who will get the bulk of the carries at the start of the season. In conclusion, Matt Breida can be written down as a RB 4 with RB 2 upside.
Kareem Hunt:
The Browns and running back Kareem Hunt have come to an agreement and he signed his tender. The former Chiefs star will be a Brown once again, he provides his talents in the passing game as he ranked in the top 30 of pass-catching backs in terms of efficiency. Along with running back Nick Chubb, they will provide the one-two punch Cleveland has been accustomed to seeing. Because of this, both will have great fantasy value. In conclusion, Hunt is a borderline RB 2 with upside.
Leonard Fournette:
Jacksonville beaches were not the only things opening up this weekend. Rumors are surrounding the Jacksonville ball carrier as some say the organization looks to trade the workhorse back. Leonard Fournette is coming off a monster season in terms of volume, because of this, he looks to add a spark with whatever organization gets him. In conclusion, where ever he lands he will be an instant low-end RB 1.
Joe Mixon:
Bengals running back Joe Mixon says he is prepared for a long term hold out and will not risk injury this season. As the ball carrier is set to make just over $1 million in the last year of his rookie contract he knows what the value of a workhorse back can have to a team. The back looks to make a huge deal with the rebuilding Bengals, because of his Pro Bowl talents Mixon will be a deadly piece of any offense. In conclusion, if Mixon is on the field start him. He will be a low-end RB 1.
Todd Gurley:
The Atlanta Falcons and Todd Gurley have reported this week, that with the signing of running back Brian Hill, Gurley will not have a workhorse load. I believe he will be a major focal point of the offense. He is said to be in the mix of things and not carry the bulk of the shares. Gurley is an exciting and electric playmaker given the opportunity. Because of this look for Gurley to be a great mid-draft pickup. In conclusion, when Todd Gurley steps on the field fire him up in starting rosters. He will be an RB 2 with RB 1 upside.
Christian McCaffrey:
Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey signed the largest contract for a running back in history this week. The former Stanford playmaker had a historic season in every category. The organization will guarantee the Pro Bowler $30 million to keep on playing for them. This does not change his fantasy value as he is the 1.01 consensus player. Don’t get cute and pass on CMC because of this. In conclusion, if there was any way CMC could play harder this season, this is the reason. Therefore, fire him up as the 1.01 Fantasy Football player.
