Fantasy Spotlight: The Man They Call “Cheetah”

The 2022 NFL offseason was filled with exciting and surprising moves all around the league. One of them involved the Kansas City Chiefs, who traded star wideout Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins for draft picks.

Many were surprised of the trade by the Chiefs’ front office. But, more importantly, Hill went to a team that felt like they were one star away from a dangerous offense.

Fast forward to today, and the Miami Dolphins have one of the most dangerous offenses in football. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is becoming a stud after years of struggling, and Jaylen Waddle continues to impress in his sophomore season.

But the real story is Tyreek Hill. He could have a season we have never seen from a wide receiver in NFL history. For fantasy managers, those who drafted him to their team can just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Welcome To Miami

Hill had a great 2021 season, catching 111 balls from Patrick Mahomes for 1239 yards. His nine touchdowns were ninth-best in the NFL.

However, his 296.5 PPR fantasy points were far from the best in the league. That title belonged to Cooper Kupp, who had an outrageous 145 receptions for 1947 yards and 16 touchdowns. It totaled 439.5 fantasy points.

But, the trade to Miami seemed like a good thing for Tyreek. Tight end Mike Gesicki is no Travis Kelce. Jaylen Waddle was the only wideout that seemed dependable for a mediocre position group. Hill entered and unofficially took the number one receiver on the depth chart.

With first-year head coach Mike McDaniel coming from San Francisco, he knew Tyreek needed to have the ball in his hands to move this offense. If quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was going to prove the doubters wrong, he would have to rely on his new weapon.

Both things are true today. McDaniel is 5-3 as a head coach, and Tagovailoa has been impressive despite missing time with a concussion.

More importantly, Tyreek has been Miami’s offense no matter who’s under center. Entering Friday, Hill leads the NFL in receptions (69) and yards (961). His two touchdowns are a bit low. But, the volume he’s receiving is getting the job done.

Tyreek Hill Is Why You Draft A Wide Receiver In The First Round

The “Cheetah” has been outstanding in terms of fantasy thus far. His 179.6 fantasy PPR points leads all wideouts entering week nine, and is third-best among all offensive players (only behind Josh Allen and Joe Burrow).

Most people draft running backs in the first round because it’s hard to find dependable guys in the later rounds. Tyreek Hill has shown wideouts shouldn’t be forgotten too.

Fantasy Points Entering Week Nine

The four running backs above were taken in the first round ahead of Hill in most drafts. All of them are behind Hill in total fantasy points.

Let’s see why this is the case. For one, Hill has seven games with double-digit targets thus far. When he goes for more than 100 receiving yards, the exact numbers include 190, 160, 177, and 188 yards.

Through eight games, he has finished with single-digit fantasy points only once (5.3 points against Buffalo in week three).

But, his 42.0 fantasy points in week two against Baltimore have been his best performance yet. We haven’t even mentioned what he did in week eight against the Lions.

That game led to a 31.5 fantasy point day for the Dolphins receiver. Outstandingly ridiculous.

Despite having only one game with a touchdown, it has not slowed down his fantasy production. His receptions and receiving yards are saving the day, and no one is complaining.

Tyreek Hill can win you fantasy matchups just by his performance alone. He’s a special player, and Kansas City definitely made a mistake trading him away.

For the record, the Chiefs’ best receiver is Juju Smith-Schuster. He only has 93.4 fantasy points. Do with that what you will.

The “Cheetah” is on the loose, and no one can slow him down.
