Fantasy Steals & Wheels: Pre-NFL Draft Values

In an ongoing segment, I will periodically provide some players I think have great value to bring onto your team (steals), and players I think can get a great return for shipping out (wheels). Check back regularly with Belly Up Fantasy Sports to see my latest suggestions.

Pre-Draft Fantasy Steals & Wheels

With the draft bearing down, and reports that we are all way off base about what will happen, it’s difficult to know where value stands. A receiver might look great today, but Friday morning has a first round talent to fight with for touches. Still, there are a few situations in the league that seem set enough to make some assumptions on, so let’s check out some Steals & Wheels while we wait to find out who will be throwing the ball to CeeDee Lamb.

Steal – RB Devin Singletary, Buffalo Bills

Everywhere I look, Buffalo Bills running back Devin Singletary is still being regarded as a tier 4 running back. With the addition of Stefon Diggs to the offense, quarterback Josh Allen finally has someone he can target to take the top off of defenses. Allen’s inaccuracy on deep balls won’t matter as much with Diggs reaching for passes, and defenses will have to respect that threat in a real way. This, paired with potential offensive line upgrades in the draft, could lead to much wider running lanes for Singletary this season.

Wheel – WR Adam Thielen, Minnesota Vikings

Adam Thielen Fantasy Steals & Wheels

Some people look at Adam Thielen after the Diggs trade and see a monster fantasy receiver whose volume will only go up. I see an aging wide out who may get leaned on to the point of breaking down.  It took the Vikings a few weeks last season to get the wheels on the offense, and now another new playcaller is coming to town. Not only does the potential workload and Thielen’s age worry me, but the Vikings offense could be one Dalvin Cook injury away from looking an awful lot like the offense of the division rival Chicago Bears. No thanks.

Wheel – Quarterbacks. All of Them.

Whatever one you’re thinking about holding onto in dynasty, or whatever one you’re thinking about drafting early. Stop it. We go through this every single year. There will be a handful of them who go off a few weeks, there will be a handful of them who Peterman out now and again, and there will be a bunch of them who are basically interchangeable week to week. With the draft still a few weeks away, we are still knee-deep in silly season. So, if you’re having those covetous thoughts about Lamar Jackson or Patrick Mahomes, come back to reality. The value in one QB leagues just isn’t there.

Steal – Houston Texans. Most of Them.

I’m not saying to rush out and snatch up Texans like it’s Black Friday, but I don’t think their value could be any lower than it will be going into this season. While I hate the moves head coach/GM/real-life goomba Bill O’Brien has made from both an on-field and fantasy perspective, the fact is that the Texans have always had fantasy producers in his offense.

Will Fuller V and Brandin Cooks are major injury risks, but the potential for big seasons if healthy is absolutely there. If either does miss extended time, Kenny Stills could be in for a big year. If David Johnson can regain any of his former explosiveness after basically a season off, he could have a return to form, or at least to being serviceable. The bad publicity may push some of these guys into the latter part of the middle rounds. Grab your lottery ticket.
