Jake Paul to Box Former UFC champ Tyron Woodley

According to The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger (via sources), Jake Paul and Tyron Woodley have agreed to box.

To be clear, Jake Paul is not a legitimate boxer.

This whole schtick is nothing more than a money grab. Which is fine; I’m all for the hustle and getting whatever you can get while you can get it.

What annoys me is his insistence that he’s serious and a real boxer.

This will be Paul’s fourth professional fight if the report is true, all four coming against someone making their professional debut.

Who has Jake Paul faced as a professional boxer

Paul’s opponents have been a Youtuber (Ali Eson Gib), a retired NBA player (Nate Robinson), a retired MMA fighter coming off hip replacement surgery (Ben Askren), and now a 39-year-old Woodley coming off four consecutive losses in the UFC.

From the Coppinger piece in The Athletic;

Laugh all you want, but ask most professional boxers and they’ll tell you: Paul isn’t bad for being a complete novice. Against Askren, Paul showed that he can box patiently and set up his shots with fundamentals. No one is saying Paul is elite; far from it. But with just three pro fights under his belt, he’s proving to be a competent boxer

I understand what Coppinger is saying, but that’s not taking his competition into account. Maybe he has patiently set up shots with fundamentals, but isn’t it infinitely easier to do that when you’re in the ring with a person that is only in the ring with you for a payday?

A date for the event has not been revealed as of yet.
