As the weeks progress and more bets are made, we learn more about betting tendencies and trends. It’s hard to point to some, or any, ideas that have been picked up in recent weeks. This isn’t because my bets have been accurate or that I’m making a profit. I tend to break even. Rather, it is because it is hard to take new insights from every week of action. Here are my “New Rules” following the past few weeks.
New Rule: No Line is Too Large in College Football
For the past few weeks, I would look at the top programs and see the odds. Alabama was favored by 30.5 points against Kentucky and 23.5 points against Auburn. They won and covered in both games. This isn’t just Alabama running up the score. Clemson, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Florida have all won and covered spreads greater than 20. These programs are all trying to boost their resumes in every possible facet with the season being shortened. Expect the top schools to win and run up the score, thus covering any spread possible.
New Rule: Parlay With Alternate Spreads and Totals
One of the early “New Rules” that are learned from making parlay bets is that you lose with risky bets. When making parley bets, each leg should have reasonable odds of covering. One of the ways of assuring a leg can cover is betting on an alternate spread or an alternate total. While you might not get good odds, it’s important to keep in mind the other legs in the parlay. If the total for a game is 45.5, take an alternate total of 40.5 to secure covering. Keep in mind, these odds sometimes barely miss.
50 Yards Is the Mendoza Line for Over/Under for Player Props
There are a lot of “New Rules” to consider when betting the Over/Under on a player’s yards. For starters, you should find out if they are the top player in their respective positions. Running back by committee is a red flag and a quarterback that throws to all of his targets is a red flag. Also, keep in mind the offense that player is in and the defense they are facing. The most important thing is the line that the player is getting. 50 yards is the Mendoza Line where if a player is given a higher line than 50 you should bet the Under and lower than 50 is a chance to bet the Over. Granted, some players have great games despite high lines, looking at you Derrick Henry and Davante Adams. But, in general, things cancel out.
