The NHL season starts with the keystone state rivalry as the Penguins travel to Philadelphia. With the season underway, we should look at some of the reasonable and viable bets to take in the upcoming games. Some teams are underdogs but give us great odds to win their opening night games. Likewise, we have some players that should score on opening night and give us great payouts if they do. Without further conversation, let’s look at some opening night bets.
Canadians Over Maple Leafs (+120)
The Montreal Canadians travel to Toronto for the opening game of the season. The Leafs are expected to win the North Division and possibly end the long Stanley Cup drought. While they have a better team, this game is one that can give us the first upset of the season. The Canadians’ goalie Carey Price gives them a chance to win every game and is the better goalie in this game. Additionally, the Canadians have the defense to give both John Tavares and Auston Matthews problems all night. The Canadians might not be the better team but give you goo enough odds for an opening night upset.
Canucks Over Oilers (+105)
This is going to be a great game that features an expected good team and a sleeper team. The Oilers are expected to be great this season behind two of the top players in the game in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The Canucks might not have household names yet. However, they carry a deep roster with a strong defense that only improved with the signing of Nate Schmidt. The Oilers are favored to win. Though, with the acquisition of Braden Holtby, we can expect the Canucks to turn a lot of heads and halt the Oilers attack. The Canucks will win this game with strong defense and the ability to score on an Oilers defense that has proven weaknesses from the recent years.
Lightning anytime goal scorers; Ondrej Palat (+210), Blake Coleman (+280) Victor Hedman (+350)
This type of bet is the most advisable type of bet I can give. Personally, this strategy won me a lot of money in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and will likely work again this year (but maybe not). Place three separate bets on anytime goal scorers on a team that you know can pile on the goals. All it takes is for one of those goal scorers to knock one into the back of the net and you make a profit on the day. My pick for opening night is the Tampa Bay Lightning. This game is poised to be a high-scoring game and the Lightning should be able to find the back of the net multiple times. In this game, the Lightning should be able to score in their later lines, which are significantly better than Chicago’s.
