One Quick Thought Before Day Two: AFC Edition

Tua Tagovailoa One Quick Thought

In the aftermath of round one and prior to the start of round two, I have one quick thought about each NFL team. This edition will cover the teams from the AFC. Check out the NFC teams, and stay tuned to Belly Up Fantasy Sports for continuing coverage of the 2020 NFL Draft all weekend.

One Quick Thought: Baltimore Ravens

Patrick Queen one quick thought
Last Night: Pick 28 LB Patrick Queen, LSU
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 55; Round 2, Pick 60; Round 3, Pick 92; Round 3 Compensatory Pick 106

Words cannot properly express how little I want to see Queen in purple next year. With three picks tonight, this is too much talent to add to a team that only lost two games in the regular season last year. At least they can’t win in the playoffs. Running back and receiver are both possibilities tonight.

Buffalo Bills

Last Night: No Picks
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 54; Round 3, Pick 86

The Bills made their bed when they sent their first round pick to Minnesota for WR Stefon Diggs. Last night, they had to lie in it. It couldn’t have been easy watching LSU WR Justin Jefferson fall to the Vikings at 22, Buffalo’s original pick. Diggs and RB Devin Singletary could both use upgraded running mates, but I think Buffalo goes defense tonight.

Cincinnati Bengals

Last Night: Pick 1 QB Joe Burrow, LSU
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 33; Round 3, Pick 65

The Bengals allegedly withstood Miami’s best efforts and stood pat for Burrow. I could see the Bengals moving back with either of their picks tonight, though. They have so little talent across so much of the roster, they could use the extra picks. If not, I think they take Zack Baun or Ross Blacklock.

Cleveland Browns

Last Night: Pick 10 OT Jedrick Wills, Jr., Alabama
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 41; Round 3, Pick 74; Round 3 Compensatory Pick 97

Based on the talk leading up to the draft, I thought the Browns would get whichever of the top tackles was left. I was pretty sure it would be Georgia’s Andrew Thomas, too. Turns out, Thomas was the only one off the board at 10. With another Thomas, Hall of Famer Joe, to help him transition left, I love the pick. I think they move up tonight to secure Xavier McKinney, Grant Delpit, Antoine Winfield, Jr., or Baun.

One Quick Thought: Denver Broncos

Jerry Jeudy one quick thought
Last Night: Pick 15 WR Jerry Jeudy, Alabama
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 46; Round 3, Pick 77; Round 3 Pick 83

Jeudy might end up being a steal at 15, but the Broncos should have been the ones to overreach on speed. Someone has to run down Drew Lock‘s overthrows. An aging defense needs help, they could use another receiver for depth, their perpetual offensive line woes are there. The Broncos can go almost anywhere tonight.

Houston Texans

Last Night: No Picks
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 40; Round 3, Pick 90

Bill O’Brien, the head coach/GM/grown-up Bebop of the Houston Texans was rumored to want to move into the first round last night. If only he had a valuable asset to offer, like, say, one of the best receivers in the league. Houston only has two picks tonight to shore up several holes. Maybe Billy Boy does something smart and trades back for more picks. I doubt it.

Indianapolis Colts

Last Night: No Picks
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 34; Round 2, Pick 44; Round 3, Pick 75;

The Colts traded their first round pick this year to the San Francisco 49ers for DeForest Buckner. I like Buckner a lot, so I’m fine with the move. The bigger question is, where exactly do the Colts stand right now? They brought in Philip Rivers to try to move the offense for a year or two, but they are still in such flux after Andrew Luck‘s retirement. I honestly have no idea what they will do tonight.

One Quick Thought: Jacksonville Jaguars

K'Lavon Chaisson
Last Night: Pick 9 CB C.J. Henderson, Florida
Pick 20 EDGE K’Lavon Chaisson, LSU
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 42; Round 3, Pick 73

I actually really like the picks by Jacksonville last night. It’s too bad they’ll be gone within three years, though. Jacksonville’s only real need is talent, so they can go wherever they’d like tonight. The more interesting thing to watch will be whether Leonard Fournette and Yannick Ngakoue are traded.

Kansas City Chiefs

Last Night: Pick 32 RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, LSU
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 63; Round 3, Pick 96

Edwards-Helaire is an interesting choice. I certainly didn’t have him as my top back, but that’s where Andy Reid and the Chiefs decided to go. His effect on the offense will be interesting, he’s billing as more of a passing threat than a runner. Expect tonight’s picks to help out the defense.

One Quick Thought: Los Angeles Chargers

Justin Herbert
Last Night: Pick 6 QB Justin Herbert, Oregon
Pick 23 LB Kenneth Murray, Oklahoma
Tonight: No Picks

The Chargers are without a selection in the two rounds featured tonight after trading up with New England to secure Murray. The addition of Murray to an already wildly talented defense and the weapons in place make me less worried about Herbert’s shortcomings than, say, Miami. A stout defense can really take the pressure off a QB, and there are burners to throw to.

Las Vegas Raiders

Last Night: Pick 12 WR Henry Ruggs, III, Alabama
Pick 19 CB Damon Arnett, Ohio State
Tonight: Round 3, Pick 80; Round 3, Pick 81; Round 3, Pick 91

Mike Mayock and Jon Gruden did their best to make Al Davis proud, taking the fastest guy over the best guy. Then, for the second year in a row, they took a defensive player far earlier than projected. I’d love to tell you I have any clue whatsoever what these guys are thinking, but I don’t. I bet they take a kicker tonight.

Miami Dolphins

Last Night: Pick 5 QB Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama
Pick 18 OT Austin Jackson, USC
Pick 30 CB Noah Igbinoghene, Auburn
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 39; Round 2, Pick 56; Round 3, Pick 70;

Miami finally starts to see an influx of talent, with three picks down and three to go tonight. Tua has been the target since last offseason, and they got him. I think that means another year of Ryan Fitzpatrick, but these young players can grow and develop together. The Igbinoghene confuses me, just because one place they do have talent already is corner. The possibilities tonight are endless, but we should see at least one more fantasy weapon chosen.

New England Patriots

Last Night: No Picks
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 37; Round 3, Pick 71, Round 3, Pick 87; Round 3 Compensatory Pick 100

New England received two picks tonight from the Chargers (37, 71) to move out of the first round. This will allow Bill Belichick to bring in a lot of talent quickly. I think he will be focused on building the defense, but expect a fantasy viable option with pick 37. Just like Chris Pinto had originally mocked them at 23, I think the Patriots take Notre Dame TE Cole Kmet there.

One Quick Thought: New York Jets

Mekhi Becton
Last Night: Pick 11 OT Mekhi Becton, Louisville
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 48; Round 3, Pick 68; Round 3, Pick 79

The Jets decided to go for protection over firepower Thursday, taking Becton. Sam Darnold will appreciate the help staying upright, but he needs someone to throw the ball to. I could easily see two of these picks being receivers, or a move up to secure Denzel Mims or Tee Higgins early in the second.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Last Night: No Picks
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 49; Round 3 Compensatory Pick 102

The Steelers had no problem sitting out last night for Minkah Fitzpatrick. He made them a competitive team with two nobodies at quarterback last year. If A.J. Epenesa or Yetur Gross-Matos falls to them at 49, I will probably punch something. Then I will remember the Browns got Wills and right tackle Jack Conklin, so it doesn’t matter.

Tennessee Titans

Last Night: Pick 29 OT Isaiah Wilson, Georgia
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 61; Round 3, Pick 93

The Titans needed a replacement for Conklin. For most teams, a right tackle might be able to wait. With the Titans trying to maximize whatever window they have with Derrick Henry, though, offensive line is important. I could see them looking for a pass catcher tonight at either WR or TE.
