In the aftermath of round one and prior to the start of round two, I have one quick thought about each NFL team. This edition will cover the teams from the NFC, and later today another will cover the AFC. Stay tuned to Belly Up Fantasy Sports for continuing coverage of the 2020 NFL Draft all weekend.
One Quick Thought: Arizona Cardinals
Last Night: Pick 8 LB Isaiah Simmons, Clemson
Tonight: Round 3, Pick 72
Kyler Murray’s campaign to get his college teammate CeeDee Lamb to town didn’t materialize. The Cardinals hope Simmons is a transformative talent on a weak defense. With only pick 72 tonight, I’m sure they will be active in trying to trade. Offensive line help is badly needed.
Atlanta Falcons
Last Night: Pick 16 CB A.J. Terrell, Clemson
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 47; Round 3, Pick 78
Terrell had been climbing some boards, but still shocked many at 16. With Desmond Trufant gone, the Falcons needed a corner, I’m just not sure they got the right one. Insurance for Todd Gurley is the only thing that should keep them from adding defensive talent on day two.
Carolina Panthers
Last Night: Pick 7 DL Derrick Brown, Auburn
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 38; Round 3 Pick 69
Brown at seven is a huge get, he is one of the most talented defensive linemen in the draft. With the early round two pick, LB Zack Baun could be in play as a result of Luke Kuechly‘s surprising retirement. A thin tight end class means their best option might be in round three based on value. Beyond TE, the weapons are likely set.
Chicago Bears
Last Night: No Picks
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 43; Round 2, Pick 50
Looking at the players the Raiders got last night (WR Henry Ruggs, III, and CB Damon Arnett), the Bears have to feel good about the Khalil Mack trade. Give me Mack over those two all day. After two second-round picks, the Bears don’t pick again until round five, so they had better make them count. Look for a trade down of one or both.
One Quick Thought: Dallas Cowboys
Last Night: Pick 17 WR CeeDee Lamb, Oklahoma
Tonight: Round 2 Pick 51; Round 3, Pick 82
The “Jerry’s gone rogue,” pick we were all hoping for. The Cowboys offense will be as explosive as Mike McCarthy lets it next year, assuming they use at least one of the picks tonight on the line. Once vaulted, retirements have left them with some serious holes upfront.
Detroit Lions
Last Night: Pick 3 CB Jeff Okudah, Ohio State
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 35; Round 3 Pick 67; Round 3, Pick 85
As far as an improvement over last year, the Lions will be lucky if this shakes out as a lateral move. Okudah comes in to replace Darius Slay. Pairing with the newly acquired Trufant makes a nice duo, but it would be nice if they’d amass talent for once. I hope Matt Patricia sticks with defense tonight and the team builds an identity for once.
One Quick Thought: Green Bay Packers
Last Night: Pick 26 QB Jordan Love, Utah State
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 62; Round 3 Pick 94
In the shocking move of the night, the Packers traded up for the rights to Love. Aaron Rodgers gets a taste of his own medicine and now has a successor to groom. The biggest question for fantasy? Rodgers’ temperament after the move. He didn’t play well when he was unhappy with McCarthy, will he play well if he’s unhappy with the organization?
Los Angeles Rams
Last Night: No Picks
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 52; Round 2, Pick 57; Round 3, Pick 84
The Rams lost the ability to select a prospect last night in return for the services of Jalen Ramsey. After arriving in Los Angeles last year, his play didn’t necessarily justify the trade, especially now that LSU edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson fell to the Jaguars with the pick. At least head coach/GM/sentient hungry, hungry hippo of the Houston Texans Bill O’Brien helped ease the pain with pick 57.
Minnesota Vikings
Last Night: Pick 22 WR Justin Jefferson; Pick 31 CB Jeff Gladney, TCU
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 58; Round 3, Pick 89; Round 3 Compensatory Pick 105
I fully expected Mike Zimmer to will the Vikings go defense with both of these picks. With Jefferson still available, though, they almost had to pick him. They added two day three picks trading back with San Francisco, which is good for a team that lost a ton of talent this offseason. They two biggest talents they lost, WR Stefon Diggs and CB Xavier Rhodes, were replaced on day one. Now, to retool the offensive line and add some edge rushers.
One Quick Thought: New Orleans Saints
Last Night: Pick 24 C Cesar Ruiz, Michigan
Tonight: Round 3, Pick 88
The Saints made the move on a center and I understand the pick. They have been desperate for a solid guy snapping the ball since trading Jimmy Graham for Max Unger in 2015. Even with Emmanuel Sanders in town, I still would’ve liked to have seen them add one of the explosive receivers. If they move back into day two at all it will probably be for the same thing as pick 88, defense.
New York Giants
Last Night: Pick 4, OT Andrew Thomas, Georgia
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 36; Round 3 Compensatory Pick 99
The Giants had their pick of the tackles and went Thomas. I get it, I had him at the top of my list, too, solely because he has always been on the left. They’re just really didn’t seem to be much else separating the four guys at the top. GM Dave Gettleman can’t really make a bad pick on day two, they need help everywhere.
Philadelphia Eagles
Last Night: Pick 21 WR Jalen Reagor, TCU
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 53; Round 3 Compensatory Pick 103
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, the Eagles drafted Nelson Agholor 2.0 last night. I didn’t like the pick in general, and the fact that Jefferson went with the next pick makes it even worse. If Alshon Jeffery winds up getting moved, it’s hard to imagine it will be for a day two pick. There are too many talented receivers left in the draft that don’t have Jeffery’s miles or injury history. Still, if they are motivated to move on from him, they could take another receiver tonight and move Jeffery for a day three pick.
One Quick Thought: San Francisco 49ers
Last Night: Pick 14 DL Javon Kinlaw, South Carolina
Pick 25 WR Brandon Aiyuk, Arizona State
Tonight: No Picks
The 49ers traded two picks on day 3 to move up for Aiyuk. That leaves them with only three picks left in the rest of the draft. The receiver was a huge need, but I don’t like Aiyuk that much more than Tee Higgins or Laviska Shenault, Jr. Swapping DeForest Buckner for Kinlaw doesn’t make much sense to me, but I guess they get a few more cheap years up the middle.
Seattle Seahawks
Last Night: Pick 27 LB Jordyn Brooks, Texas Tech
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 59; Round 2, Pick 64; Round 3 Compensatory Pick 101
I don’t hate that Seattle went defense, I don’t hate that they went linebacker. I just don’t understand Brooks over Patrick Queen here. Plus, then not taking Queen left him for the Ravens at 28. On second thought, I do hate this pick. One of the picks tonight should be a running back.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Last Night: Pick 13 OT Tristan Wirfs, Iowa
Tonight: Round 2, Pick 45; Round 3, Pick 76
The Buccaneers moved up and got their guy at tackle. Whether the 49ers actually had another trade partner or not isn’t a huge deal since it only cost a fourth-rounder. Wirfs is a physical beast and will have a job protecting Tom Brady right out of the gate. I’m guessing they choose a running back in round two tonight.
One Quick Thought: Washington Redskins
Last Night: Pick 2 EDGE Chase Young, Ohio State
Tonight: Round 3, Pick 66
The Redskins get the consensus most talented player in the draft at pick two. Ron Rivera will take all of this talent and make it a pass-rushing nightmare, I’m sure. I’m not so sure the offense keeps them out of the top of next years draft. I’m not so sure the Redskins mind that, either, given the play of Dwayne Haskins in his rookie year.
