The Chiefs dominated last night, winning 34-20 against the Houston Texans, with the Chiefs covering. While a fourteen point win is a lot, the game never really felt that close. This is due, in no small part, to the contributions of Sammy Watkins. With a statline of seven catches for 82 yards and a touchdown, Sammy put up about around 18 points depending on your league’s scoring. He should be a lock for a starting slot the rest of the way, right? Wrong, sell Sammy Watkins right now.
It’s All Downhill From Here

Last year, Sammy went off in week one versus the Jaguars. Putting up a ridiculous statline of nine receptions for 198 yards and three touchdowns, Watkins looked poised to be a major contributor on the Chiefs offense. Then, nothing. Okay, not exactly nothing, but the rest of the way he only caught more than five passes twice, and only got above 50 receiving yards thrice. You may be thinking, “But Kev, he at least got tuddies right? Maybe he was a red zone threat.” His next regular season touchdown came after week one came… last night. You cannot, and should not, expect this output week in and week out because, frankly, its not going to happen.
Ok, that was aggressive, and I’m not saying Sammy Watkins is a bad receiver. If he’s a free agent and one of your receivers has a bye, he’s worth the pickup. But, if he’s on your roster right now, sell Sammy Watkins now, and see if he’s a free agent in a month.
Too Many Mouths to Feed
Ever hear the phrase “too much of a good thing”? Well, that’s exactly what the Chiefs have when it comes to fantasy. The half a billion dollar man has Tyreek Hill, Mecole Hardman, Travis Kelce, and now Clyde Edwards-Helaire to feed, in addition to Sammy Watkins. If one of those guys are eating this season, that’s where he’ll be looking. As skilled as Watkins is, he is not a viable week in, week out guy. Also, with Mahomes, Hill and Kelce are my first two looks. Depending on the play, I might check for a swing to Edwards-Helaire, then see whatever Watkins is doing. With so many good players to worry about, any one of them could get lost in games. Well, maybe not Kelce, but the receivers would.
Sell Watkins High
If history tells us anything, Sammy Watkins just had his best game this season. Now is the time to sell, as his return will never be higher the rest of the way. No, you won’t get CMC or George Kittle for him, but you can get some nice pieces. Need an RB1? Dangle Watkins for Josh Jacobs . Need a tight end? Maybe couple him and a backup, take a swing at Ertz. Taking a shot at a mid or borderline upper tier player will help you more than holding onto Watkins.
There you have it. Don’t be an idiot, and sell Sammy Watkins. After you do that, thank be on twitter @BellyUpKev, and be sure to follow @BellyUpFantasy for all your fantasy sports needs.
