Over the next 40 days (May 1st to June 10th), I will break down 40 of the NFL’s “Sophomores”. By sophomores, Imean players in their 2nd year of the NFL. The 2019 Draft class was quite special and has shown some early promise. I want to reflect on each player’s rookie year, take a look forward, and finally evaluate their dynasty and redraft value going into the 2020 NFL Season. I hope you enjoy this 40-day adventure as I dive into the emerging stars the NFL has to offer. Next on the list is Dwayne Haskins. Below you will find every player I have covered to this date.
Sophomore SZN : Kyler Murray / Daniel Jones / T.J. Hockenson / Dwayne Haskins / Noah Fant / Josh Jacobs / Marquise Brown / N’Keal Harry
Rookie Season
To start the 2019 season, Haskins was slated behind Case Keenum and career backup Colt McCoy. Between head and foot injuries, the Redskins couldn’t rely on Keenum. They decided that McCoy was the answer but after he went down with an injury, Haskins was now put to the task. I don’t like how the Redskins handled all of this. If I took a QB with the 15th pick in the draft, I would be more committed to his development.
Haskins got his first start in Week 9 against the Bills. Haskins threw for 144 yards with no TD and no interceptions. Yes, not the best start for the rookie, but the Bills defense was good in 2019, and the Redskins lacked offensive talent around Haskins. Haskins’ best game of his rookie season came against divisional rival Philadelphia Eagles. In their Week 15 meeting, Haskins threw for 261 yards and 2 TD. Haskins showed promising aspects to his game as he tried to bump the Eagles out of the playoffs.
Looking Forward
With the offseason signing of new head coach Ron Rivera, it was still up in there of who would be the Redskins’ QB. Despite rumors for Tua at the 2nd overall pick, Rivera has said that Haskins has shown enough promise and wants to work with him. I would agree here. Haskins has shown that he is capable of running that offense the way that Rivera likes. A concern for me is Haskins’ accuracy which falls in line with his completion percentage. Haskins only completed 58% of passes in 2019, and I would love to see that number closer to 65% in 2020.
The Redskins traded Trent Williams to the San Fransisco 49ers during the middle of the 2020 NFL Draft. I don’t think the loss of Williams hurt the Redskins by any means. He didn’t play in 2019 and the off the field issues would be too much for me, but I don’t know both sides of the story. The Redskins paired Haskins with college teammate Terry McLaurin. McLaurin was the bright spot on their offense and will continue to be a big-time player for them in 2020. I would love to see Haskins target “F1” more. Steven Sims stepped up in the back half of the 2019 season, and I have every reason to believe that he will line up across from McLaurin in 2020.

Redraft Value
Haskins still holds little to no redraft value for me. I think he will go in the last round of fantasy drafts and most of the time he will be on the waiver wire. If he starts the 2020 season hot, I would be prepared to add him to your team. He has good targets around him with McLaurin, Sims, and Antonio Gandy-Golden. It will also be interesting to see how the Redskins will use Antonio Gibson. Gibson and AGG are both great in the open field so it may just be easier for Haskins to get them the ball early and let them do the heavy work. The Redskins’ defense will continue to struggle so Haskins will have to throw the ball to win games. Even in a bad spot last year, Rivera made the Carolina Panthers fantasy relevant. Just be on the lookout for the right time to grab Haskins.
Dynasty Value
Haskins would rank just outside of the Top 20 for dynasty QB. He has shown promise and he is only entering his second year in the league. Rivera is known for having prolific offenses and Washington has pieces to help them be successful. If Haskins can improve his accuracy, he has every chance to be a week to week fantasy player. My concern is if he will take the next step? I have a feeling that he wants it but how short will his leash be if he messes up. My current projection for him is 3,200 passing yards and 22 TD. Haskins is worth a hold for me in dynasty leagues as we await a possible breakout.
