The NFL draft finally arrived last night and thank goodness! There were real sports really happening! It wasn’t long before the Cowboys surprised almost everyone when they selected Oklahoma WR CeeDee Lamb with their 17th selection in the draft. The implications of that pick will be huge, both on the field and in fantasy. This is the Cowboys draft fantasy fallout.
Fantasy Winner: Dak Prescott, QB
The biggest winner of the current Cowboys is clearly Dak Prescott. Any time that a team can add an elite weapon such as Lamb, the quarterback must be pleased. Prescott is coming off a huge season in which he threw for 4,902 yards and 30 touchdowns. I have heard much talk about how Prescott is not a good QB, but such talk is nonsense. It looks like Prescott wants to be paid like he is the best quarterback in the league, but that is a story for another day. In the meantime, the fantasy lamp couldn’t be any brighter for Prescott going into next season and he must be one of the first quarterback selected.
Fantasy Winner: The Entire Cowboys Offense
Get ready to select the Cowboys players early and often in next year’s fantasy drafts. Lamb is an upgrade over the departed Randall Cobb, who signed with the Houston Texans. When Dallas runs a three-wide receiver set, they will have Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and Lamb going downfield. Can you imagine the headache that is going to cause defensive coordinators trying to come up with a scheme to stop that?
Add in running back Ezekiel Elliott, and the offense is set to climb to heights not seen in Dallas since the height of the triplets. Gallup’s catches may not be as high as they were going to be without Lamb on the roster, but he will face one-on-one coverage a lot more often and his touchdown rate should rise. And we haven’t even discussed tight end Blake Jarwin, who looks to heavily increase his catches after being the number two TE last season. Add it all up and the Cowboys draft fallout will be enormous. Just remember where you heard it from first.
Fantasy Loser: The Dallas Defense
You might have noticed the Cowboys defense wasn’t always at its best last year. Then in the offseason, they lost some big pieces in defensive back Byron Jones, who signed with the Dolphins and defensive lineman Robert Quinn, who signed with the Bears. Those were two of their best, if not their best, players on defense. The Cowboys spend their time in free agency signing some reclamation projects, but they need youth. At least last night, they didn’t get it.
If Dallas doesn’t get busy in a hurry, there are just two words that I have for the Cowboys draft fantasy fallout on their defense for next season: waiver wire. Until further notice, that is where they will stay. Of course, this was only the first round of the draft. There is much more to come! Even though it was dark during much of the draft last night, didn’t it seem as if there was a brightness throughout the land that we haven’t seen in quite a while? It sure did to me. We had sports! We had the NFL!
There will surely be more football news to come that will shape how things fall out on the field and in fantasy. Furthermore, I am sure that we are all sitting at the edge of our seat for as much as we can get.
