When people consider trades with picks, everyone is focused on 2023 picks. This is especially true this year since people have been looking forward to this draft class for two years now due to the less exciting 2022 class, which was projected to be a relatively weak one between the 2021 and 2023 rookies. When people look at 2024 picks, they see those as very far away, but in reality, the time for 2024 picks starts in 2023.
Why?
This isn’t going to be some sort of mind-blowing revelation. It’s largely about pointing out this simple fact. Once your league completes its 2023 draft, the 2024 draft picks become the most valuable picks.
However, right now, the mentality I see amongst many is that 2024 is still a long way off. I’d imagine that for most dynasty players, 2024 picks aren’t desirable assets right now. People will be focusing on players and 2023 picks, which makes sense. But once the rookie draft passes, I expect those 2024 picks to skyrocket in value. This is because then, 2024 picks will be the nearest ones.
You can take this as a warning, a warning to not just use 2024 picks as throw-ins. This is especially true as many would argue the best QB (in Caleb Williams), the best WR (in Marvin Harrison Jr), the best RB (in TreVeyon Henderson), and the best TE (in Brock Bowers) in college are not coming out this year, but are likely to come out next year. I am not saying I would agree with that, but the point is that 2024 is looking to be a strong class as well.
You can also take this as an opportunity. This can be a fast-closing window to acquire 2024 picks relatively cheaply. In a blockbuster deal, you could try to get these picks as throw-ins. For rebuilders, it could be a better move to target the cheaper 2024 picks rather than the very expensive 2023 ones.
Wrap-Up
I always end my articles with a wrap-up, but it’s pretty simple in this case. Because 2023 rookie drafts are likely to happen within the next few months, those picks will be gone meaning the time for 2024 picks starts in 2023.
