Fantasy Baseball

Top 10 Rankings: Second Basemen

Hi Everyone. With all sports being postponed due to COVID-19, you still have more time to draft your fantasy baseball team! Throughout this ranking series, I will give my top 10 C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, OF, SP, and RP. Today’s countdown is all about the second basemen. In today’s game, the second base position has some young studs with endless potential. The main statistics I will be using for a hitter are AVG, R, HR, RBI, and SB because these are the five categories for hitters in fantasy baseball. Here is my Top 10 Rankings: Second Basemen.

10. Cavan Biggio, Toronto Blue Jays

Kicking off my top 10 fantasy baseball second basemen countdown is Toronto’s, Cavan Biggio. Cavan, who is former MLB player Joe Biggio’s son, made his major league debut last season. Biggio ended up playing in 100 games. During those 100 games, Biggio batted .234, hit 16 dingers, drove in 48 runs, and crossed the plate 66 times. On top of this, Biggio stole 14 bases. While his average was low, I like the well-rounded player that Cavan is. He has power and speed, and with more experience, I think his average will go up. Biggio had a decent rookie campaign, and it’s something he can definitely build off of.

9. Mike Moustakas, Cinncinati Reds

Coming in at number nine on my top 10 fantasy baseball second basemen is Mike Moustakas. Mike has always been known for his power, and in 2019, Moustakas, also known as the Moose, reminded the MLB about his power. In 143 games the Moose hit 35 HRs, drove in 87 while batting .254. These numbers earned Moustakas a spot on the all-star team. Mike was moved from Milwaukee to Cincinnati in the offseason. Moustakas now gets to bat behind Votto, Suarez, and Castellanos, which will provide more RBI opportunities for Moustakas. I expect another 30+ homer year for the Reds second baseman, which gives him solid fantasy value going into the 2020 season.

8. Keston Hiura, Milwaukee Brewers

Making a statement at number eight is Milwaukee second baseman, Keston Hiura. The rookie proved to the Brewers and the MLB that he is one of the great young second basemen in today’s game. In only 84 games played, Hiura put up big numbers. Keston hit for an average of .303, along with 19 bombs, 49 RBIs, 51 runs scored, and 9 SBs. Hiura reminds me of Biggio, but Hiura had a better year in 16 less games. Batting behind Christian Yelich is a huge plus for Keston because of the amount of attention Yelich gets from opposing pitchers. I believe that Hiura will have another solid season, and fantasy owners should seriously look into drafting this young player with tons of upside.

7. Jeff McNeil, New York Mets

Ranking number seven on my top 10 fantasy baseball second basemen is Jeff McNeil. In 2018, McNeil’s first season in the big leagues, Jeff hit for a great average of .328, but the power and RBI production wasn’t there. In 2019, however, McNeil added power and run production into his game. McNeil hit .318, with 23 homers, 75 RBIs, and 83 runs scored. This was all done in 133 games. These numbers earned McNeil his first all-star selection of his career. McNeil also plays third base and left field. Fantasy owner of McNeil can plug him in almost anywhere in the lineup. The Mets have a solid offensive lineup with Alonso, Conforto, Rosario, and of course McNeil. I see Jeff McNeil having another productive year with the Mets, and his versatility along with his stellar play gives him great fantasy value.

6. DJ LeMahieu, New York Yankees

Coming in at number six on my top 10 fantasy baseball second basemen is DJ LeMahieu. To say that DJ likes playing in the Bronx is an understatement. In his first year with the Yankees, DJ batted for an average of .327, hit 26 over the fence, drove in 102 runners, and touched home plate 109 times. LeMahieu was able to stay healthy during the 2019 season, as he played in 145 games for the Yankees. DJ can also play multiple positions, which is always a plus for fantasy owners. LeMahieu and McNeil share a lot of similarities, but I ranked DJ ahead of McNeil, simply because DJ had a better year. McNeil also had a great year, but LeMahieu was just a bit better. With the Yankees stacked lineup, I see DJ LeMahieu having another outstanding year for the Yankees.

5. Whit Merrifield, Kansas City Royals

Making the top five fantasy baseball second basemen is Kansas City’s, Whit Merrifield. Merrifield didn’t have the kind of season he did in 2018, but still, put up big numbers. In 2019, Merrifield batted for an average of .302, hit 16 HRs, 75 RBI, 20 SBs, and 105 runs. To make things even more impressive, Merrifield played in all 162 games. Merrifield is a great all-around player, who does everything well. Whit did get caught stealing 10 times last season, which isn’t great, but being only 30 years old, I think Merrifield still has the speed to steal 30+bases. In 2018 Merrifield stole 45 bases, so he definitely has the potential to do so. Merrifield can also play some OF, which only adds to his value. Whit Merrifield is a very solid second baseman, and fantasy owners should highly value his durability and great all-around play.

4. Ketel Marte, Arizona Diamondbacks

Ranking at number four on my top 10 fantasy baseball second basemen is Ketel Marte. The 25-year-old had his breakout season in 2019. Matte hit .329, along with 32 dingers, 92, RBIs, 97 runs scored, and 10 SBs. These phenomenal numbers were accomplished in 144 games. Marte is a young star, who possesses great contact and power hitting. An average of .329 is outstanding by itself. Hitting .329 and possessing the power to hit 30+ homers is a sign of a superstar. Playing 81 games in the desert also helps Marte because the balls fly in the hot desert air. Like so many of the other second basemen on this list, Marte plays multiple positions. Ketel can play third base and center field, along with second base. If you are given the opportunity to draft Ketel matter, do so in a blink of an eye.

3. Jose Altuve, Houston Astros

Making the cut for top three fantasy baseball second baseman is Houston’s Jose Altuve. There has been a lot of noise surrounding the Houston Astros this offseason, but for now, I’m just going to focus on Altuve’s stats. 2019 was an interesting year stats-wise for Altuve. Jose has been known for his great contact hitting. In 2019, Altuve batted .298, hit 31 homers, drove in 74 runners, and scored 89 times. While a .298 average is very solid, Jose Altuve is used to seeing that number above .310. Although Altuve’s average was a little lower than usual, Jose hit 30+ HRs for the first time in his career. Altuve has been a solid player throughout his career and I see him continuing his success in 2020.

2. Ozzie Albies, Atlanta Braves

Coming in at number two on my top 10 fantasy baseball second basemen countdown is Ozzie Albies. Atlanta’s second baseman has settled in very nicely to the MLB. in 2018, Albies had a solid year, but in 2019, Albies proved that he was capable of much more. In 160 games, Albies hit for an average of .295, smacked 24 balls over the fence, drove in 86 runners, scored 102 times, and stole 15 bases. The 22-year-old is the definition of an all-around player. Ozzie can hit for power, while maintaining a solid average, and has plenty of speed. The Braves are also a great hitting teams with Acuna, Freeman, and Ozuna, so Albies fits in perfectly. You can’t really go wrong with drafting Ozzie Albies, as he is a young star, who checks off all five hitting categories in fantasy baseball.

1. Gleyber Torres, New York Yankees

Winning the award for best fantasy baseball second basemen is… Gleyber Torres! New York’s young second baseman is an absolute stud. In 144 games in 2019, Torres hit for an average of .278, while hitting 38 dingers, driving in 90 runs, and scored 96 times. The raw power is there with Torres, and at 22 years old, Gleyber will only get better. Most players of Torres’s status would be walked a lot, but since the Yankees have such a dominant lineup, pitchers have to face some hitters, so Torres gets his pitches to hit. Torres also plays shortstop along with second base. With all this said, I don’t know how you wouldn’t draft Torres given the opportunity. Gleyber Torres ranks number one for me because of his talent at such a young age, and he will only get better in the coming years.
