Fantasy Baseball

Top 10 Rankings: Third Basemen

Hi Everyone. With all sports being postponed due to COVID-19, you still have more time to draft your fantasy baseball team! Throughout this ranking series, I will give my top 10 C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, OF, SP, and RP. Today’s countdown is all about the hot corner. Third basemen have to possess great reflexes, have a great arm, and have a high baseball IQ. The main statistics I will be using for a hitter are AVG, R, HR, RBI, and SB because these are the five categories for hitters in fantasy baseball. Without further ado, here are my top 10 rankings: third basemen.

10. Josh Donaldson, Minnesota Twins

Kicking off my top 10 fantasy baseball third basemen countdown is Minnesota’s, Josh Donaldson. Donaldson’s age hasn’t seemed to catch up to him yet. The 33-year-old had yet another successful year. In 155 games, Josh hit for an average of .259, slugged 37 homers, drove in 94 runs, and scored 96 times. Being on the Bomba Squad, also known as the Minnesota Twins, gives Donaldson endless opportunities with runners on base. The only downside in drafting Donaldson is his age.

Injuries and a decline in play come more apparent with age, so Josh may have an off-year. Although Donaldson is getting older, his past numbers are too good to pass on, making him a solid fantasy baseball third baseman.

9. Yoan Moncada, Chicago White Sox

Coming in at number nine on my top 10 fantasy baseball third basemen is Yoan Moncada. Chicago’s young stud had a breakout 2019 season. The 24-year-old hit .315, 25 bombs, 79 RBIs, 83 Rs, and 10 SBs. Similar to Moncada’s teammate Tim Anderson, expect Yoan’s RBI total to go up this season due to Chicago’s new and improved lineup. I love Moncada’s potential, and he is a player who possesses great value in the fantasy draft. I like the numbers that Moncada put up last season, and with an updated White Sox team, I see Moncada having an even more productive year.

Top 10 3B: 8. Matt Chapman, Oakland Athletics

Ranking at number eight on my top 10 fantasy baseball countdown is Oakland’s, Matt Chapman. Chapman is one of the most underrated players in baseball. Matt is one of the best two-way players in the game, as he can flash the leather and muscle baseballs over the fence. In 2019, Chapman hit for an average of .249 with 36 dingers, 91 RBIs, and touched home plate 102 times. If most fantasy leagues counted fielding, then Chapman would be a lot higher on this list, but since hitting is the main concern, I’m going to focus mostly on that.

Chapman has extreme power. This guy is a true slugger in today’s game. Something that Oakland fans and fantasy baseball players love to see is Chapman’s progression. Every season, Chapman puts up better numbers than the last. Matt has only been in the majors for three seasons, but it seems that he hasn’t hit his full potential yet. Matt Chapman is at the beginning of his prime, and I think he still has more to prove in the big leagues, which gives him even more fantasy value.

7. Manny Machado, San Diego Padres

Coming in at number seven on my top 10 fantasy baseball third basemen countdown is San Diego’s, Manny Machado. The longtime Baltimore Oriole had a decent year with the Padres in 2019. In 156 games played, Machado hit for an average of .256, with 32 homers, 85 runs batted in, and scored 81 runs. Not a bad year at all for Manny, but considering what Machado can do, this was certainly not his best season. Machado’s average was a career-low in 2019, but the power is still there. Manny Machado is a lethal hitter, who still has solid fantasy value.

6. Kris Bryant, Chicago Cubs

Kris Bryant Top 10

The number six fantasy baseball third baseman is Kris Bryant. Chicago’s franchise third baseman put up big numbers in 2019. In 147 games played, Bryant hit .282, 31 HRs, 77 RBIs, and 108 Rs. These stats led Bryant to his third all-star team selection. Although Bryant’s RBI total was down last season, his runs scored showed that he was getting hits and getting on base. Bryant batted second last season, so he was before Rizzo, Baez, and Contreras, which was a reason why Bryant’s RBI count was down. Don’t let Bryant’s low RBI total scare you away, as he is a premium third baseman in today’s game.

5. Jose Ramirez, Cleveland Indians

Jose Ramirez Top 10

Making the top five fantasy baseball third basemen is Jose Ramirez. After an MVP type performance in 2018, Ramirez didn’t have the 2019 season that a lot of fantasy owners expected. In 129 games, Jose hit for an average of .255, 23 HRs, 83 RBIs, 68 Rs, and 24 SBs. Still solid numbers from Ramirez, but nothing compared to 2018. Besides the average, Ramirez put up solid numbers in just 129 games. The Indians have a good offensive team, which means Ramirez will get opportunities with RISP.

Jose can also play second base and shortstop along with third base, which gives fantasy owners versatility on their roster. Jose Ramirez will most likely drop a few rounds in the draft but know that you are drafting a versatile, all-around solid third baseman in Jose Ramirez.

Top 10 3B: 4. Rafael Devers, Boston Red Sox

Rafael Devers Top 10

Ranking at number four on my top 10 fantasy baseball third basemen countdown is Boston’s, Rafael Devers. Rafael turned some heads in 2019. In 156 games played, Devers hit .311, with 32 dingers, 115 RBIs, touched the plate 129 games. Absolute monster numbers in 2019 from Devers. Being only 22 years old, Devers should only get better with more experience in the majors. Rafael is one of the up and coming players in the MLB and has loads of potential. Devers is an electric third baseman who is one of the best hitters on this list.

3. Alex Bregman, Houston Astros

Alex Bregman Top 10

Making the top three fantasy baseball third basemen is Houston’s, Alex Bregman. I said this about Bregman’s teammate Jose Altuve and I’m going to say it again. There has been a lot of chaos surrounding the Astros this offseason, but I’m only focusing on Bregman’s numbers. In 2019, Bregman hit for an average of .296, hit 41 bombs, drove in 112, and scored 122 times. These numbers almost won the MVP for Bregman, but he lost to the one and only Mike Trout. It’s very hard to pass up on an MVP runner up, and Bregman is no different. When drafting Bregman, know that you are getting a productive and consistent hitter

2. Anthony Rendon, Los Angeles Angels

Anthony Rendon Top 10

Coming in at my number two fantasy baseball third basemen is World Series champion, Anthony Rendon. Dominant was what Rendon was in 2019. In 146 games played, Rendon hit .319, 34 bombs, drove in 126 runners, which led the majors and scored 117 runs. You can’t ask more out of a player if you’re a fantasy owner. These huge numbers lead to Rendon playing in his first all-star game.

2019 was a year to not forget for Anthony, as he made the all-star team, won a silver slugger, was top three in MVP voting, and got a World Series ring. Rendon is a very talented hitter, who is right in his prime and is destined for another spectacular fantasy season.

1. Nolan Arenado, Colorado Rockies

Nolan Arenado Top 10

The number one fantasy baseball third baseman is Colorado’s, Nolan Arenado! The five-time all-star had yet another dominant season in the big leagues. In 2019, Arenado hit for an average of .315, with 41 dingers, 118 RBIs, and 102 Rs. In terms of health, Arenado has been one of the healthiest players in the last five seasons. Since 2015, Arenado has played in at least 155 games every season. Arenado goes in the first round in most drafts, so knowing that Arenado can stay healthy, and be one of the best hitters in the majors, gives Arenado extreme fantasy value. Playing at Coors Field also gives Arenado another edge, as the balls fly in the thin air. Nolan Arenado is an established, solid hitter, who is going to put up big numbers every year.
