Fantasy Football

Top Remaining Fantasy Football Free Agents

Three weeks into the new league year, the NFL free agent shelves have pretty much been picked clean. But there are still some good players available that will have an impact, one way or another, on fantasy teams this season. You will want to pay close attention to where these players land so you can be prepared when draft day comes. Here are the top fantasy free agents.

Jadeveon Clowney, Defensive End

Russell Wilson to Jadeveon Clowney: 'I need you, homie'

Surprised that a defensive player is the top remaining fantasy free agent? You shouldn’t be. Remember that defense/special teams play a huge role on fantasy rosters. Depending on your league settings, the defense could be one of the top point scorers week to week. Given that information, whichever team signs Jadeveon Clowney will significantly move up the defensive fantasy rankings. He has the third best mark versus the run among edge defenders since 2017 and provides solid pass rush as well. He has had well documented injury issues in the past, but appeared in 13 games for Seattle last season. It looks like he will have to lower his asking price, but will sign sooner or later. Personally, I am hoping he stays with the Seahawks. Regardless, look to make a move on the defense that does sign him come draft day.

Jameis Winston, Quarterback

I wrote previously that Jameis Winston was one of the biggest free agent losers in fantasy. That hasn’t changed. That doesn’t mean that he isn’t one of the top fantasy free agents, because he is. That applies most to the offense personnel of the team that signs him surrounds him with. What kind of wide receivers do they have? How fast are they? We all know that Winston can throw the ball down field with the best of them. The receivers of the team that signs him should get a big boost in ADP. Make sure you plug that in to your projections come draft day.

Delanie Walker, Tight End

The past two seasons have been a waste for Walker. The exception is Week 1 last year when he scored two touchdowns against Cleveland. Those were the only TDs he scored and was done after week six. But it wasn’t so long ago that he was targeted over a hundred times four seasons in a row. If he signs and looks healthy in preseason games, he could be a huge dividend to a fantasy roster. Tight end is a shallow position to begin with and we will take all the players possible to select. He shouldn’t cost as much draft capital as some other players, but keep an eye on him. He could definitely be one of the remaining top fantasy free agents.

Devonta Freeman, Running Back

The past two years have also not been kind to Devonta Freeman, as he has scored only two touchdowns total. Atlanta released him and that might have been the best thing for Freeman, as a change of scenery could do wonders. It wasn’t so long ago that he scored 29 TDs in a three year span. He has to be in the right situation and healthy. If he proves that in exhibition games, give him a look later in the draft. He could provide a big return.

Cam Newton, Quarterback

Cam Newton - Wikipedia

In the same article as Winston, I pointed out that Newton was one the biggest fantasy free agent losers. I contend that he is a bigger loser than Winston, as Cam can’t prove he is healthy in the current climate. But we can’t lose sight of just how great a player he was, and not so long ago. He won’t be able to prove himself until preseason games start, but fantasy drafts shouldn’t be happening until just before the regular season anyway. Monitor him after he signs throughout the preseason. No way am I saying that he should be a team’s fantasy starting quarterback. But he could be a worthy late round stash if everything goes well.

I will freely admit that the above list doesn’t have the sexiest names on it. But they all could provide big time value and impact on a fantasy roster. The NFL is the only game in town at the moment and many of us need as much distraction as we can get. Projecting a fantasy football roster is a great way of doing just that.
