2020 NFL Draft Analysis: Cowboys

Hi everyone, I will be breaking down moves the Cowboys have made in the offseason, their draft needs, and finally tie in how all of this affects fantasy football. Here is my 2020 NFL Draft Analysis: Cowboys.

The 2019-20 season was a disappointment for the Cowboys. Dallas finished 8-8, which wasn’t enough to win the NFC East. Unlike the Cowboys division rivals, Dallas had a solid defense last year, as they only gave up 19.8 points per game. While this statistic sounds good, Dallas only forced seven INTs, which was tied for last in the league. The Cowboys also lost CB Byron Jones, who signed with the Dolphins, so a lockdown CB in Dallas is desperately needed. A gamechanger in the secondary would bolster the Cowboys defense, and make them a lot more desirable in fantasy football. The Cowboy offense has many great players, but it seems like the Cowboys can’t put it all together.

Traded/Released by Organization:

CB Byron Jones
WR Randall Cobb
OL Travis Frederick (retired)
DE Robert Quinn
DL Maliek Collins
S Jeff Heath

Acquired/Signed by Organization:

DT Gerald McCoy
DT Dontari Poe
S Ha-Ha Clinton Dix
CB Saivion Smith
CB Maurice Canady
K Greg Zuerlein

Draft Day Needs:

The Cowboys’ most glaring need is at CB. With the loss of Byron Jones, the Cowboys don’t have a lockdown CB, which is a major issue, so the Cowboys may address that in the draft. Another edge rusher to pair up with DeMarcus Lawrence would be a scary duo to face. The loss of Randall Cobb is another huge one for the Cowboys. This draft has so many great wideouts, so the Cowboys may want to invest in a WR. I can also see Dallas packaging their first-rounder and future picks, for a solid WR or CB. It will be very interesting to see what the Cowboys end up doing on draft day. Here are some players that the Cowboys should consider drafting:

K’Lavon Chaisson, EDGE, LSU
K.J. Hamler, WR, Penn State
Kristian Fulton, CB, LSU
A.J. Terrell, CB, Clemson
Justin Jefferson, WR, LSU

Fantasy Implications:

The Cowboys blockbuster players will hold similar fantasy value no matter which direction Dallas takes in the draft because they are elite players. If the Cowboys draft a WR, then Prescott’s value will increase, but Prescott is still a solid fantasy QB if they don’t. However, if the Cowboys draft some defensive players to fill some holes, Dallas’s D/ST may be something to look into. The Cowboys have fantasy football studs on their team, who will hold great value no matter what team they are on.

Quarterback:

Dak Prescott had his best season in 2019-20. Dak threw for 4,902 yards, 30 TDs, and 11 INTs. Along with his great passing numbers, Prescott utilized his legs this past season. Dallas’s QB rushed 52 times for 277 yards and three TDs. Dak has lots of offensive weapons to utilize. If the Cowboys draft a WR, then Prescott will just have one more target to throw to, which is never a bad thing. Dak Prescott is set to have another dominant season, and fantasy owners should look into drafting Dak.

Running Back:

Let Zeke eat is what the Cowboys did in the 2019-20 season. Ezekiel Elliott carried the rock 301 times for 1,357 yards, and 12 TDs. Zeke put up monster numbers last season, and I see a repeat performance this year for Elliott. Losing Travis Frederick to retirement hurts, but the Cowboys still have a solid line when healthy. Elliott is one of the top RBs in the NFL, and he will possess tremendous fantasy value for many more years.

Wide Reciever:

In his first full year with Dallas, Amari Cooper had the best season of his career. Cooper posted 79 receptions for 1,189 yards and eight TDs. Ever since Cooper stepped foot in Dallas, he and Prescott have clicked on the field. In 23 games with the Cowboys Cooper has 14 TDs. Amari Cooper has fit in perfectly with Dallas and has shown that he can be a low WR1 or a high WR2.

Michael Gallup had a breakout season in 2019-20. Gallup caught 66 passes for 1107 yards and six TDs. These numbers were achieved in only 14 games. Cooper and Gallup are a scary WR duo. With a lot of the attention being on Elliott and Cooper, Gallup gets his fair share of opportunities. The 6’1″ WR has loads of potential, and fantasy owners should seriously consider drafting Micheal Gallup.

Tight End:

With Jason Witten gone, Blake Jarwin is the staring TE on the Cowboys. Jarwin is a talented young TE, but the Cowboys have so many more options before Jarwin. If you are in a deeper league then Jarwin isn’t a bad player to have, but I would try and look elsewhere for your TE.

Conclusion:

The Cowboys will have a lot of options on draft day, but in terms of fantasy implications, the Cowboys studs will always be studs. The Cowboys D/ST may become more valuable if they trade or draft a few defensive players.
