AFC Divisional Early Saturday Game Preview

It’s the Divisional Round, and we’re still hard at it. Rankings are still being ranked and we’re prospecting for each game’s best fantasy prospects. The AFC Divisional Round Saturday early game pits the top seed Kansas City Chiefs against America’s newest favorite underdogs, the Jacksonville Jaguars. The game airs on NBC at 4:30 pm EST this Saturday, January 21.

AFC Divisional Round Early Saturday Game Preview: Jaguars’ Offense

Jacksonville’s WR2 is a fantasy secret weapon.

New coach, new culture. The Jaguars seem to have officially put the Urban Meyer Co-ed Dumpster FireTM behind them. Trevor Lawrence looks like the top draft pick we all hoped he’d be. Christian Kirk and the Jones Brothers (Zay and Marvin) are giving secondary units fits. Even Evan Engram has blossomed into the top-five option at tight end we thought he’d be after a stellar rookie season in 2017. Doug Pederson has coaxed the potential out of every corner of this team and has them on a hot streak. Winners of six straight, the Jags stole the AFC South from Tennessee, then stole their Wild Card matchup with the Chargers after trying desperately to give it away for an entire half. Jacksonville is fun again.

DFS Outlook

I talked last week about the value to be found in the Jaguars’ passing offense, and this week is more of the same. Kansas City surrendered the fourth-most half-ppr points to opposing quarterbacks, and the eleventh-most to opposing wide receivers. I plugged Zay Jones into every DFS lineup I could last week, and he rewarded me (and those who listened) with 21.4 points on the day. He’s a bit more expensive this week at $4,700, but that’s still good value for the middle of your wideout corps. Kirk at $6,000 isn’t Bargain-of-the-Week material, but represents a nice stackable option. Lawrence ($6,000) is just the sixth-most expensive quarterback. The match-up and stackability makes him a very intriguing option this week.

This contest has the highest over/under of any of the four games this weekend. If that holds, there’ll be some nice numbers out of the Jaguars’ passing game. That means Evan Engram at an affordable $4,300 is a nice option as well. The Chiefs are a bit better against opposing fantasy tight ends, but not much. If you want a true “stack” and not just a pairing, then Engram makes a fine choice this week with a Jaguar wideout. I have him ranked fourth, right in line with his cost but a much thriftier play than Travis Kelce or George Kittle. I’m not quite as excited about Travis Etienne ($6,400) this week value-wise, but I do have him ranked third overall. If you want to spend more at receiver but still get a potentially high-end backfield option at running back, he’s playable. Steer clear of Jacksonville’s cheap DST this week.

AFC Divisional Round Early Saturday Game Preview: Chiefs’ Offense

Jerick McKinnon has nine touchdowns in his last six games. Can the CEH experiment finally be over?

The Jaguars are going to have to score early and often, because they’ll be looking across the field at football’s top offensive unit. The Chiefs led the league in points, total yards, passing yards, and passing scores. They had fantasy’s top quarterback and top tight end. And they had a running back who exploded over the last third of the season. Andy Reid and the boys are on a hot streak of their own, winning 10 of 11. Their last loss was Week 13 at Cincinnati by a field goal.

DFS Outlook

It’s as close to a given as there is in fantasy football. The Chiefs are going to get you points, particularly at quarterback and tight end with Patrick Mahomes and Kelce. And if Jerick McKinnon‘s recent run of success continues, you’ll get a nice point total there as well. The issue is affordability in your DFS lineup. Kelce ($7,700) will cost you more than all but one wide receiver. Heck, he’ll cost you more than all but two quarterbacks, one being his own in Mahomes ($8,000) If you want to pay the premium at each position, obviously they’re worth it. But it’s going to really limit what you’re able to do in your remaining seven positions. You’re going to be shopping in the Darius Slayton/Tyler Boyd section for your wide receivers, or looking at someone’s RB2 for your RB2.

McKinnon ($6,000) has been an awesome surprise this season. He led the league in running back receiving scores and has been on a devastating tear lately. But the Jaguars just held fantasy football’s top receiving back to two catches on four targets for eight yards. Austin Ekeler scored two mid-length rushing touchdowns, but McKinnon only saw 20 rushing attempts in the redzone this season. Isiah Pacheco ($5,500) is the clear “running” back to McKinnon’s clear “receiving” back in this offense. $6,000 is a lot to be banking on a McKinnon-favorable gamescript. I don’t like either Chiefs’ back in DFS this week.

The biggest enigma on this team is the wide receiver room. You need an advanced degree in tea leaf reading to decipher which Kansas City wideout is going to be the one to go off each week. For all of the targets that Kelce eats up, Mahomes is nevertheless a great distributor of the football. Kelce and McKinnon combined for 166 catches this season. Mahomes completed 269 passes to the rest of the team. Of those, 78 went to JuJu Smith-Schuster ($5100). No one else caught more than 42. Smith-Schuster had just three scores on the year, and only one since their Week 8 bye. I’m not comfortable betting on any of the Chiefs’ receivers.

Betting Lines (Courtesy of Quarter4):

Favorite: Chiefs (-7)

Over/Under: 55.5

Notable Props: Zay Jones receptions (4.7); Christian Kirk receptions (4.8); Travis Etienne rushing yards (64.4); Travis Kelce receiving yards (75.7); Isiah Pacheco rushing yards (42.7)

Best of Luck!
