Analysis On Our First Two Picks
Ryan:
At the 1.06 I was thrilled to get Dalvin Cook, as I believe there are six backs worthy of going one through six. I was even more thrilled when Mahomes and Jackson went before me. Getting Cook at the 1.06 was of great value. I considered Kamara and Henry here, but my limited exposure to Cook in other leagues made me pivot his way. I’m a fan of locking down RBs, especially in this format where you only need to start two WRs. Plus, no QB was worthy of selecting at the 1.06 since Mahomes was off the board, and WR is devalued in this format. I knew I could wait on all of them.
With my second pick, the 2.05, I decided to pull the trigger on Nick Chubb. What I consider my first huge hit in this draft full of hits. I am not buying Kareem Hunt taking too much of Chubb’s workload, and I expect Cleveland to be better in 2020. Chubb is a workhorse who nearly won the rushing title last year. I have my two primo backs and a beautiful foundation. Joe Mixon was in consideration for me as well, but Chubb has less uncertainty to me, and a Chubb/Cook backfield is arguably the strongest one-two punch when it comes to RBs in this league.
Travis:
I drafted Lamar Jackson at the 1.05 in this SuperFlex mock draft. Just wow; talk about value right off the bat. It might be pretty obvious that he may not repeat his passing touchdown rate of 9%. At the same time, his rushing share is still pretty high and he could still realistically finish as a QB1 from his rushing yards. Where he had high, he also had lows and room for improvement coming into the 2020-21 season. His passing yards could increase, rushing touchdowns can increase, and the number of throws could also increase. I love getting Lamar and in a SuperFlex league, this pick has great value.
RBs and QBs were getting slammed early, as expected. There was one other WR taken at the 2.04, DeAndre Hopkins. Sitting at the 2.06 and with some of the most sure-handed running backs taken off the board, I had Michael Thomas in my sights. I smashed that draft button without a blink of an eye. While Michael Thomas most likely won’t repeat what he did last year, I was very happy to get one of the best, if not the best WR in the NFL. Michael Thomas has the safest floor out of any other receiver in the game. Playing in the NFC South also helps Thomas due to the lack of defensive talent in that division. They call him Can’t Guard Mike for a reason and it’s simply true that no can guard him. If you ever see Mike Thomas in the second round, don’t think twice about it.
Nate:
In this week’s mock draft, I was given the 1.01. In a SuperFlex league, you do see QBs taken at the 1.01 or 1.02, but I was set on one guy from the start. Christian McCaffrey. There is some debate on who should be the first RB off the board, Barkley or CMC, but after McCaffrey’s monster season, it’s hard not to take him at the 1.01. As a Giants fan, I know how great Saquon is, and with an improved offensive line he could be the RB1 at the end of the year. However, after rushing for 1,387 yards, and 15 TDs, and recording more than 1,000 receiving yards and 4 TDs, Christian McCaffrey was the way to go at the 1.01.
After picking CMC at the 1.01, lots of QBs went off the board, as it is a SuperFlex league. Due to this, I wanted to try a new strategy. Instead of picking one or two QBs in the early to middle rounds, I was going to hold off until the later rounds to pick up my QBs.
When I was back on the clock at the 2.10, I saw Davante Adams on the board. Adams has the capabilities to dethrone Micheal Thomas as the WR1. Adams only played in 12 games last season, but still recorded 997 receiving yards. If Adams can post 1200 plus receiving yards and 10 plus TDs, he could very well be the WR1. I planned to draft Julio Jones and Davante Adams with my back to back picks, but Jones was taken the pick before. However, I still got Adams at the 2.10, which is great value, even in a Superflex league.
Tony:
Tyreek Hill, WR, KC. Here at the 1.09 spot, I wanted a top wideout, despite the run on QBs in the first eight picks, being a SuperFlex draft. Michael Thomas was obviously in the mix too. While I expect him to be arguably the top fantasy wideout or at least top two (DeAndre Hopkins), I don’t anticipate him matching last season’s numbers. I personally went with Tyreek for his explosiveness, speed, and better ability to run the ball via WR sweeps. 32 TDs in his first four seasons in the NFL certainly doesn’t hurt. Throw in his return ability when used, and he is easily the most versatile weapon in the game.
Russell Wilson, QB, Seattle. For me at this spot, it was a no brainer. As mentioned above, the run on QBs made this choice very easy for me. As a Seahawks fan, I had to go with my boy in the northwest. Wilson is easily a top three to five fantasy QB year in and year out. His ability to make plays with his legs, combined with an emerging big target in DK Metcalf, makes him an easy choice with the 2.02 pick.
Matt:
No brainer. I have Saquon as 1.01, but CMC is an excellent option at the 1.01 also. Saquon should explode behind that improved offensive line, and along with the development of Jones, he is absolutely a top two value. I would have called him crazy if he had gone any other way, But I am very high on Saquon. Big things are coming for the Giants in fantasy, and Matt did well to get himself the gem of that offense. Nobody would think it was crazy if Saquon finished as the RB1 in 2020.
After taking Saquon Barkley with the 1.02, Matt took Julio Jones at the 2.09, which was the perfect spot to grab the stud WR. Michael Thomas and DeAndre Hopkins were already taken off the board a few picks before him. Julio Jones is poised to have a monster season. He could very well could see 150 plus targets this season. The man averages 10 plus targets a game for his entire career. 1,252 targets in 125 career games. That stat just blows my mind. I look for Julio Jones to do Julio Jones things and be a top three receiver in 2020. His health has been there. I personally believe for 2020 he could be as safe as it gets for owning a receiver of his caliber.
