Fantasy Baseball

Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Pickups

The 2020 MLB season is something we fantasy owners have never experienced before. With only 60 games to prove your fantasy dominance, working the waiver wire has become even more important. Every Monday, I will give you some players who aren’t highly owned and tell you why they could make a big impact on your fantasy team. Without further ado, I present the first weekly edition of Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Pickups!

C.J. Cron, 1B, Detroit Tigers

If you’re looking for a guy who can hit four HRs in a week, C.J. Cron is more than capable of doing so. In the last two seasons, Cron has shown off his power, as he blasted 55 HRs in that time frame. Along with his power, Cron has managed to keep his career average at a respectable .259. Cron’s situation isn’t the best, but his power should outweigh being on the Tigers. Through the first few games in 2020, Cron has two homers and a couple of knocks under his belt. Cron is owned in 39 percent of Yahoo leagues, and if he’s available in your league, I would highly consider picking him up. If you’re looking for a first baseman with some pop, C.J. Cron is a solid waiver wire option.

Robinson Cano, 2B, New York Mets

While Robinson Cano is aging and reaching the end of his career, he is still one of the most professional hitters in today’s game. In his 16 year MLB career, Cano has an average of .302, 324 HRs, and 1,272 RBIs. Being on the Mets, Cano is hitting behind Jeff McNeil, Pete Alonso, and Yoenis Cespedes, which should give him lots of opportunities with RISP. Cano’s last two seasons have been plagued by injury. However, in a 60 game season with a universal DH, I’m hopeful Cano can stay healthy this season. Cano is old, so if you have a top waiver spot, I would probably use it on one of the other guys in this article, but if you want an under the radar guy, Cano is a solid canidate.

Eric Hosmer, 1B, San Diego Padres

Waiver Wire

Eric Hosmer has shown his consistency and production throughout his career. When drafting Hosmer, you’re getting 20 plus HRs, 75 plus RBIs, and an average of at least .250 (in a 162 game season). With Tatis Jr. and Machado at the top of the Padres order, Hosmer will get good pitches to hit, and his fair share of opportunities with RISP. On opening day, Hosmer started the year strong with six RBIs, and then followed that up with a dinger in Sunday’s game vs. the D-Backs. Hosmer has been very durable throughout his career. Since 2015, Hosmer has only missed 15 games. The durability combined with production makes Hosmer a reliable fantasy play day in and day out. Eric Hosmer is owned in 55 percent of Yahoo leagues. If you have the chance to add Hosmer to your squad, I would highly recommend doing so.

Yusmeiro Petit, RP, Oakland Athletics

Waiver Wire

The first pitcher to crack this week’s waiver wire article is Oakland’s, Yusmeiro Petit. In a 60 game season, every game means more. Therefore in a close game, the A’s are going to get Petit involved. Last season, Petit appeared in 80 games for the A’s, which led the A.L In those 80 games, Petit posted an impressive 2.71 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, and struck out 71 batters in 83 innings. Petit is a lights out reliever, who should be heavily involved this season. Although Petit won’t be getting many saves, the chance at a win and the sheer number of appearances I’m expecting Petit to make could make him a solid deep league waiver pickup.
