Without question, it has been a crazy couple of weeks around the NFL and fantasy football. The scores of the games and performances by the players have been difficult to predict, to say the least. Raise your hand if you saw the Steelers and Lions battling to a tie last Sunday. I am looking as far as my eyes can see and not a single hand is in the air. The point of all this is that managers are hard pressed to figure out who the best options are for their lineups. Not to worry, as this fantasy football start/sit week eleven is here to help put fantasy teams in the best position to win.
Running Backs
Starts
Myles Gaskin, Miami Dolphins
Those that have read this column in the past will recognize this isn’t the first time Myles Gaskin has shown up in the start section. That observation is certainly correct and Gaskin makes another appearance this week. The pattern that was pointed out a few weeks ago is as strong as ever today. Since week five, Gaskin has rotated very good performances with near disappearing acts.
On Thursday night against Baltimore, Gaskin barely seemed like he even made it out of the team’s locker room. Gaskin only had 31 yards on the ground and caught just a single pass. Fortunately, that clunker is out of the way with the Jets up next. New York’s defense has been completely missing in action the past four games, having given up 54, 31, 45 and another 45 points in that stretch. Look for Gaskin to find the end zone this weekend and rack up the yards. Without question, Gaskin is a must start this Sunday.
D’Andre Swift, Detroit Lions
It certainly seems as if the fantasy community has been down on D’Andre Swift this season. Of course, one of those reasons is that the Lions are simply not very good, Sunday’s tie not withstanding. However, a view of his numbers indicates that Swift has been solid much more than suspect this year. The game against the Steelers is a good indication of that. Swift carried the ball a staggering 33 times Sunday, resulting in 130 yards. He also caught three passes in the game.
The result was 19 fantasy points, which a manager will take from a running back any day of the week. It was the fifth time this season Swift has scored at least that many fantasy points in a game. He also had a game with 17 fantasy points. Next up is a matchup with Cleveland. We all saw how the Patriots racked havoc on the Browns this past weekend. Swift was limited in practice this week, so check to see if he is in the lineup. If so, make sure Swift is in yours as well.
Sits
Jordan Howard, Philadelphia Eagles
To be sure, Jordan Howard has been a whirlwind the past few weeks, both on the field and in fantasy. No where to be found the first seven games, Howard was promoted onto the active roster against Detroit in week eight. All Howard did his first two games was score three touchdowns and combine for 30 fantasy points. This past Sunday in Denver, Howard rushed 12 times for 83 yards, an outstanding 6.9 yards per carry average. The Broncos kept him out of the end zone, however, and Howard finished with only eight fantasy points.
All of that activity the past three weeks was with Miles Sanders sidelined with an ankle injury. However, Sanders was designated to return this week. If Sanders makes it back on the field against New Orleans, at the very least, the running back position turns into a stable that has too many horses. Even if Sanders doesn’t play, going up against the Saints’ strong defense is not a formula for fantasy success. It is best to leave Howard out to pasture this weekend.
Mark Ingram, New Orleans Saints
This past Sunday was an excellent day for Mark Ingram. With fellow running back Alvin Kamara out of action, Ingram scored a touchdown on the ground and also caught four passes for 61 yards. Ingram came out of the contest with 20 fantasy points, by far his highest total of the season. Those managers that got Ingram into their starting lineups were handsomely rewarded.
However, this is a brand new week and Kamara is expected to be back in his usual starting role against Philadelphia. Without doubt, Kamara is one of the top running backs in the league and a focus point of the Saints offense. Managers clearly should keep Ingram on their rosters in case of another Kamara injury. Speaking of which, Kamara has missed practice this week. If he misses yet another game, reverse this fantasy football week eleven start/sit list and get Ingram into lineups.
Other Running Back Sit:
After scoring 20 fantasy points against the Jets in week nine, Nyheim Hines returned to Earth against Jacksonville with only four points this past Sunday. This week finds the Buffalo Bills and their tough defense on the schedule. I assume nothing more needs to be said and Hines will be nowhere near any starting lineups. Clearly, Hines is one of the biggest bench candidates to be found on this fantasy football start/sit week eleven list.
Wide Receivers
Starts
D.J. Moore, Carolina Panthers
Certainly, there is nothing in the play of D.J. Moore in the last few weeks to indicate that he should be in the starting phase of wide receivers on this fantasy football start/sit week eleven edition. Yet, that is exactly where he is. To be absolutely clear, it has been a rough three week stretch for Moore. He has combined for only 22 fantasy points against the Falcons, Patriots and Cardinals. The promised land, however, may not be far off for Moore and those managers that have held onto him.
First, the quarterback situation is looking markedly better for Carolina now than it was just a few weeks ago. Whether it is P.J. Walker or Cam Newton starting or in some kind of rotation, the position should be in good hands against Washington. Second, Moore’s targets have been remarkably consistent this season, with at least seven in every game.
Third, Washington’s defense has been one of the most disappointing units in the NFL this year. Add it all together, and Moore definitely belongs in starting lineups this weekend.
Hunter Renfrow, Las Vegas Raiders
The Raiders have looked like a car wreck the past couple of weeks. That isn’t surprising, given all that has happened in the Vegas desert the past six weeks. Even so, the chaos hasn’t swallowed up Hunter Renfrow. He has been an excellent, consistent receiver over the past two games. During that time, Renfrow had seven catches and nine targets each against the Giants and Chiefs.
Best of all, Renfrow has scored a touchdown in his last two contests. He has 17 fantasy points in those games as well and that should be considered his floor with the Bengals upcoming. Cincinnati has allowed receivers to score the 12th most fantasy points this season. In addition, they looked completely out of sort the last time they were on the field.
It is obvious that Derek Carr (see below) likes throwing to Renfrow and there is no reason for that to change. Renfrow clearly belongs in lineups on this fantasy football start/sit week eleven edition.
Sits
Emmanuel Sanders, Buffalo Bills
Many fantasy managers were excited after Emmanuel Sanders scored two touchdowns against Kansas City in week five. The excitement continued when Sanders followed up that performance with 91 receiving yards against Tennessee. Since then, however, Sanders has almost completely vanished from the planet and definitely belongs on the sit side of this list.
In the last three weeks, Sanders has caught just six passes in 14 targets. Even though the Bills completely demolished the Jets 45-17 last weekend, Sanders was absent from the offense as he caught just two passes. True, his single carry went for 24 yards, but that only boosted his fantasy total to six points.
The Colts are next up and they are a much better football team than the Jets. Sanders is now far from fantasy relevance and needs to be cemented to the bench until further notice.
Allen Robinson, Chicago Bears
There is little question that Allen Robinson is one of the biggest disappointments in fantasy, if not the biggest. He has made regular appearances in this column and he will remain until there is a marked improvement in his play. Robinson has received better quarterback play of late with Justin Fields (see below) under center, but that hasn’t helped his performance.
After nine weeks, Robinson has failed to score more than 10 fantasy points in any game. Since week one, he hasn’t had more than four receptions in any contest. Worst of all, Robinson has only one touchdown on the entire season. Going up against the Baltimore defense is the not the way to regain your charisma.
It all points to another down week for Robinson. He is also dealing with an injury. Keep Robinson far from your stating lineups this weekend.
Tights Ends
Starts
Mike Gesicki, Miami Dolphins
When it comes to being invisible, no one pulled that off last week quite like Mike Gesicki. The Dolphins upset the Ravens, but it certainly wasn’t because of Gesicki. Despite seven targets, he came away without a single reception. It was hoped that after he scored 21 fantasy points in consecutive games in weeks six and seven, Gesicki would be one of the top tight ends, as was predicted by many before the season began.
The past three weeks have been a black hole for him, though, with only seven receptions for 102 yards and no TDs. Undoubtedly, the question has to be asked- why the recommendation? As with Gaskin above, the Jets are the right tonic to heal any player’s production woes.
Expect a similar outcome as when Gesicki caught eight of nine targets for 115 yards against Jacksonville. Hold the nose if necessary, but get him into those starting lineups this week.
Dan Arnold, Jacksonville Jaguars
It should be obvious by now that the majority of Jacksonville players should be anywhere near starting lineups in fantasy. However, that isn’t the case with Dan Arnold. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence hasn’t developed as hoped as of yet, but he has shown he likes to throw to his tight end. Over t he past three games, Arnold has been targeted a massive 25 times.
Arnold has come away from those targets with 17 receptions for 195 yards. Best of all, he has scored 14, 10 and 13 fantasy points in those games. With as slim as the tight end position is at this point of the season, a manager could do a lot worse. Additionally, only eight teams have allowed more fantasy points to the tight end position than has the 49ers. As such, Arnold is definitely on the field on this fantasy football start/sit week eleven list.
Sits
Jared Cook, Los Angeles Chargers
When it comes to this position, few, if any, players have been more of a disappointment than Jared Cook. Even with that being true, Cook took his disappearing act to new heights against the Vikings. Despite running 21 routes, he was targeted only three times, resulting in just one reception for 10 yards.
It marked the fourth game in which Cook has caught two passes or fewer this season. There is zero chance he can be trusted this week going up against the Steelers. Keep Cook far from your starting lineups this weekend.
Dalton Schultz, Dallas Cowboys
It has been said over and over that when a person is wrong, it is best to just admit the mistake and move on. There are few analysts that could have been more wrong than I was regarding Dalton Schultz. A few weeks back, I recommended getting Schultz back into starting lineups with the return from injury by quarterback Dak Prescott. Two games have come and gone and the results are in. They aren’t pretty.
Over the past two contests, Schultz has been targeted just seven times, resulting in five catches for 68 yards and zero touchdowns. Even with the offense humming along in a 43-3 blow out of the Falcons, Schultz was targeted just twice. Even with an enticing matchup with the Chiefs next on the schedule, it is best to keep Schultz on the pine. Find a better tight end option, if need be.
Quarterbacks
Starts
Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals
When last seen, Joe Burrow came crashing from the sky after several phenomenal performances. Burrow threw two interceptions against Cleveland as the Browns embarrassed Cincinnati. Coming off their bye week, however, there is every reason to believe that Burrow will be flying high once again.
First off, the Raiders’ defense has been a train wreck against enemy quarterbacks this season. In their last three games, Las Vegas has allowed the second highest fantasy points to signal callers. Second, and most importantly, Burrow had been on a roll coming into that clash with Cleveland. Before the Browns, Burrow threw at least two TD passes in every game. In weeks four through eight, the fewest fantasy points Burrow scored was 36.5. Expect that kind of performance this Sunday. Burrow is at the head of the quarterback class on this fantasy football start/sit week eleven edition.
Derek Carr, Las Vegas Raiders
Burrow’s passing opponent this week, Derek Carr, is in a similar situation. After putting up very impressive numbers to start the season, Carr’s play has leveled off the past couple of weeks. Carr threw 12 touchdowns to five interceptions in the first seven games. Over the past two, though, he has three TDs and three interceptions, as well as a fumble.
Also like Burrow, Carr is going up against a vulnerable defense in Cincinnati. That is especially true the past two games as the Bengals have allowed 75 points. Look for Carr to return to the quarterback that threw for at least 323 yards in five of the Raiders first seven games. Carr is placed in the start section with the upmost in confidence.
Sits
Justin Fields, Chicago Bears
There are many in the NFL and fantasy worlds that want to believer in Justin Fields. Before their week ten bye, Fields threw for a career high 291 yards and a touchdown against Pittsburgh. Fields also added 45 yards on eight carries after rushing for 103 yards the week before.
Obviously, that all sounds great. The problem for Fields and his fantasy managers, is that he is going up against the Baltimore defense this weekend. Trust is coming Fields’ way going forward, but that trust would be misplaced against the Ravens. If at all possible, leave him on the bench this week.
Carson Wentz, Indianapolis Colts
To be sure, Carson Wentz has produced some excellent fantasy performances this season. Equally clear is that will not be the case this week going on the road to face Buffalo. Even in large and two QB leagues, there has to be better options out there than Wentz. Find him.
