NFC Divisional Round Saturday Night Game Preview: Giants’ Offense

The Giants have finally found a healthy weapon at wide receiver.

One of two Wild Card teams to make it to the Divisional Round, the New York Giants have been resurgent under new head coach Brian Daboll and his staff. New York declined to exercise their fifth year option on quarterback Daniel Jones this summer and looked prepared to move on from him after this season. What looked like a lame duck year for Jones now looks like a lucrative payday in the making, likely from the Giants themselves. Jones’s play has been revelatory, as his passing efficiency rose markedly in Mike Kafka‘s offense, while Jones concurrently had his most productive rushing campaign as well.

The most miraculous thing about Jones’s transformation is that he did so behind one of the worst offensive lines in the league (30th according to PFF’s end of year rankings) and with a patchwork wide receiver corps that lost most of its expected top options to injury (Sterling Shepard and Wan’Dale Robinson), trade (Kadarius Toney), or indifference (Kenny Golladay). He was helped, however, by a splendid comeback season out of running back Saquon Barkley. After three injury-plagued seasons, Barkley finally returned to the form he showed in his rookie season. Both Jones and Barkley had games to remember in the Giants’ Wild Card win over the Minnesota Vikings and will look to keep the momentum against one of the toughest defenses in the league.

DFS Outlook

Philadelphia makes for a tough matchup in fantasy no matter how you slice it. They allowed bottom-third point totals to every fantasy position except running back, where they were a dead-center sixteenth in half-ppr points allowed. That’s the bad news. The good news is that there’s great value to be found on the Giants’ roster for your DraftKings DFS lineups. Jones ($5,800) is as bargain-basement as you’ll find at quarterback, price-wise. He’s coming off perhaps the most complete game of his career on the road in his first career playoff appearance. In his one game against Philly this season (Jones sat out in Week 18), Jones threw for a modest 169 yards and a score. He did, however, also have a rushing touchdown. And therein lies the key to his value. He’s a runner. I like him to put up nice numbers for the price this week.

He can be paired with breakout wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins, who comes cheap at $4,900. He’s scored in five of six games, including last week at US Bank Stadium. He’s emerged as perhaps Jones’s favorite target. While he’ll put up modest yardage, he is coming off his first career 100 yard game. And he’s had at least four catches in each of his past six games. Plug him in as a wallet-friendly WR2. Barkley ($7,900) is expensive, but will catch balls and makes a nice stack with Jones and Hodgins. He’s also my top-ranked running back this week. Use the money you saved on Jones and Hodgins. Splurge a little. You’ve earned it. Richie James ($3,900) and Daniel Bellinger ($3,000) are volatile, but cheap, if you want to take a big swing with little wiggle room in your budget.

NFC Divisional Round Saturday Night Game Preview: Eagles’ Offense

Dallah Gibbert could be the key for the Eagles in a favorable matchup.

The top seed in the NFC hasn’t necessarily looked the part for the better part of the last month. They barely eked out a win over the Giants’ AAA squad after consecutive losses to the Cowboys and the very beatable Saints. They did just enough, however, to ensure the bye. For fantasy managers, the hope is that the bye allowed Jalen Hurts and the boys to get right in both body and mind. If they’re on their game, this is one of the most complete and explosive offenses in the league. And that means fantasy points a-plenty, albeit at a premium.

DFS Outlook

If the Giants offer IKEA-level fantasy talent, the Eagles are Ethan Allen. Hurts has played at an MVP level when healthy this season. He supported two top-ten fantasy wide receivers, as well as a top-flight tight end. Those receivers are going to be expensive, as is Hurts. But it’s possible to put up a “Super Eagles Stack” with Hurts ($7,600), A.J. Brown ($7,600), DeVonta Smith ($7,200), and Dallas Goedert ($4,500), all top-five options this week, and still have room to fit in running backs like Joe Mixon, Travis Etienne, or Tony Pollard. If you’re gun-shy about using that many options from the same passing game, you could skip either of the receivers and save yourself enough money to plug in one of the elite backs without compromising too much at WR and FLEX (see the Giants, above).

Miles Sanders ($5,700) is affordable but uninspiring this week. It’s not the worst matchup, but the Giants did just limit Dalvin Cook to a pedestrian 70 total yards and no touchdowns. Cook had just 13 fantasy points, and needed six receptions to get there. Sanders isn’t doing that for you, as he hasn’t cleared even three catches in a game since Week 5 of last season. Even if you don’t want to spend more money, you might have a better shot at the endzone with Ezekiel Elliott or Isiah Pacheco at similar prices. I have Philadelphia as my top-ranked DST this week. It’ll crowd the bottom of your roster a bit, but they could be worth the $3,200 price tag.

Betting Lines (Courtesy of Quarter4):

Favorite: Eagles (-6)

Notable Props: Jalen Hurts passing yards (270.1); A.J. Brown receiving yards (88.1); DeVonta Smith receiving yards (85.9); Daniel Jones passing yards (263.4); Saquon Barkley rushing yards (55.9)
