Fantasy Football

Week Two Fantasy Studs & Duds

Another week of football has come to an end (man time flies, slow down won’t you!), and that means another week of fantasy has finished. Some of you may be 2-0. Others are 0-2 and crying themselves to sleep.

Regardless, anything can happen in fantasy football. It’s still too early to be down in the dumps or jumping for joy. That’s what the waiver wire is all about (unless you’re in a 12-team league like myself). But, to my fantasy opponent and co-host Casey this past week: I STILL OWN YOU!

Anyways, Week Two was filled with great fantasy performances and very underwhelming ones too. Let’s dive into it.

FANTASY STUDS

The best quarterback-wide receiver duo right now: Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs

Stefon Diggs, WR, BUF: projected 17.3 PPR fantasy PTS

Arguably the best receiver in the league right now, Diggs has been phenomenal since his arrival from Minnesota in 2020. He has been quarterback Josh Allen‘s favorite target for two years straight and looks to make it three this year.

Keep in mind: Diggs had ten touchdowns last season. He already has four through two games. More importantly, he terrorizes the Titans’ secondary with 148 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Convert that to fantasy points, and he finished with the best fantasy performance of the week with 44.8 fPts.

We can talk about Cooper Kupp or Justin Jefferson, and many owners drafted these two ahead of Diggs. Although those two receivers are off to a solid start, Diggs has outplayed them exponentially. 26.2 fantasy points in week one and 44.8 in week two are an owner’s dream.

He has a date with the Miami Dolphins and cornerback Xavien Howard in week three. But, let’s face it: Diggs is HIM, and it looks like no one can slow him down.

Amon-Ra St. Brown, WR, DET: projected 13.5 fPTS

Showing flashes of stardom late last season, he continues to be Jared Goff‘s favorite target through two games. With 24 targets through two games, fantasy owners are salivating with their selection of the Lions receiver in their drafts.

Against a Washington defense that allowed Christian Kirk to roast them for 117 receiving yards in week one, St. Brown said “Hold my beer”.

Nine catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns led to 39.4 fantasy points for the young wideout. Oh, and he also led the team in rushing with 68 yards. What can’t he do?

Like Diggs, it seems he will continue to produce no matter who’s lining up against him. From a non-fantasy perspective, St. Brown did tie the NFL record with eight straight games with at least eight touchdown catches.

Not only has he been a steal for the Lions, but also for those who drafted him in the middle rounds. That’s why you always draft running backs in the first round. There are always good receivers you can draft in fantasy in the later rounds. St. Brown is one of them.

Tua Tagovailoa, QB, MIA: projected 17.2 fPTS

50 pass attempts. 36 completions. That’s a completion percentage of 72%. Tua haters: where are you at?

Okay, I was one of those haters. I just never believed in the fact that he could be a franchise quarterback in the NFL. But, after his performance against Baltimore, he may have swayed me to the other side.

After just two touchdowns through three quarters, Tagovailoa led a 28-point comeback with four touchdown passes to lead the Dolphins to a 42-38 win. It definitely helps to have guys like Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle by your side, as they were the main beneficiaries behind Tua’s big day.

For fantasy owners, he was the second-best quarterback with 38.86 fantasy points. To put it into perspective, he outplayed Jalen Hurts, Josh Allen, Kyler Murray, and Patrick Mahomes. No one could have predicted that. Welcome to the beauty of the NFL, where anything could happen.

Look, we can’t expect the Dolphins quarterback to perform like this every week. Especially when a date with the Buffalo Bills looms in week three. But, he showed out this past week and put on a show. For the 64.3% of owners who had him on their fantasy team: he may have carried you to a win.

Other Studs: Lamar Jackson (42.62 fPTS), Tyreek Hill (42.0 fPTS), Nick Chubb (32.3), Garrett Wilson (30.0).

FANTASY DUDS

Russell Wilson, QB, DEN: projected 20.1 fPTS

Facing a Houston Texans defense that allowed 352 passing yards by Matt Ryan, it seemed like Wilson would have a breakout game in week two.

Broncos Country, let’s ride? More like let’s cry if you started Wilson in fantasy. The Broncos quarterback only completed 14 of his 31 passes and threw for 219 yards. He only had one touchdown and also threw an interception. The offense is just not cooking.

Yes, it’s still early in the season. With a new head coach in Nathaniel Hackett, rough patches will come and go in a new offensive system. The Broncos still beat the Texans, but it’s safe to say the defense saved the day. With weapons like Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton, Wilson cannot have performances like this. It’s just unacceptable.

Brighter days are ahead, as Denver will face a team Wilson knows very well in the 49ers in week three. But, after two subpar fantasy performances, he just isn’t the must-start quarterback he used to be.

Justin Jefferson, WR, MIN: projected 19.6 fPTS

The Vikings wide receiver feasted on Green Bay’s defense in week one, cooking them up for 39.4 fantasy points. This is who fantasy owners drafted in the first two rounds, and they expect performances like this every week.

But, the Eagles’ defense completely silenced Jefferson and the Vikings’ offense on Monday night. The young wideout was held to just six catches for 48 yards and 10.8 fantasy points. Based off his projection, this was an underwhelming performance indeed

Being shadowed by cornerbacks Darius Slay and James Bradberry doesn’t help Jefferson’s cause, and Kirk Cousins threw three interceptions in the loss. Maybe let’s not schedule the Vikings for primetime games, yeah?

This game can be just thrown out the window. Jefferson was chosen by fantasy owners in the early rounds for a reason: he’s one of the best wide receivers in the league. He’s electric, and he will bounce back.

A date with the Detroit Lions awaits the Vikings wideout in week three. Expect him to feast.

Davante Adams, WR, LV: projected 18.8 fPTS

He won’t say it, but I will. Adams misses Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers.

Two catches? 12 yards? What happened? Derek Carr, that’s what.

You can be teammates with your best friend. There’s nothing wrong with that. But, when that person isn’t playing like a top 10 quarterback, maybe being teammates with him wasn’t a good idea.

Adams finished with 30.1 fantasy points in week one and completely underperformed with just 9.2 points against the Cardinals. Put this into perspective: Mack Hollins, Foster Moreau, and Ameer Abdullah had more receiving yards than him.

This isn’t supposed to happen. You don’t sign a top-five wideout in Adams just for him to only have two catches. But, give credit to Arizona’s defense for shutting him down.

Like Jefferson, don’t expect a subpar performance again from Adams anytime soon. The Raiders will get him the ball against a Titans secondary that just got feasted by Stefon Diggs and the Buffalo Bills

Other Duds: Travis Kelce (10.1 fPTS), Tom Brady (9.4), Derrick Henry (8.5), Dalvin Cook (7.6)
