Fantasy Baseball Waiver Priority Week Six

Major league baseball steams into the middle of May this week and the sport continues to provides thrills and surprises aplenty. We have already seen three no-hitters, amazing catches and the surprising struggles of the Dodgers after a strong start. Of course there have been injuries from coast to coast and players not meeting their expectations coming into the season. Not sure which players to pick up? Never fear! This baseball waivers week six is here to help!

Corey Dickerson, OF, Miami Marlins, 26% Owned

Corey Dickerson has sore left shoulder

Corey Dickerson took a seat Friday against the Brewers. Now that he has taken a day off, Dickerson should be a fixture in the lineup going forward for the Marlins. His hitting guarantees that, although Dickerson went 0-4 Sunday, breaking his five game hitting streak. In those games, Dickerson scored five runs. The previous week, Dickerson had two or more hits in three consecutive games. For the season, he is hitting .319-1-7 and has scored 16 runs.

In addition, Dickerson has an outstanding .402 OBP to go along with a .436 slugging and a .838 OPS. He doesn’t hit the long ball much, but provides many of the stats that fantasy managers are looking for. Best of all, he is widely available in most leagues. That alone is reason enough for Dickerson to lead off this baseball waivers week six edition.

Cesar Hernandez, 2B, Cleveland Indians, 19.1% Owned

César Hernández was everything the Indians could have hoped for in 2020 - Covering the Corner

Speaking of being available, that is exactly what Cesar Hernandez is. That may change soon if Hernandez has many more games like the one he had Thursday when he had three hits. Hernandez started the season cold but is heating up just like the weather. After play this weekend, Hernandez has hits in four of his last six games.

His .200 batting average is certainly nothing to get excited about, no question. However, now that his hot streak has arrived, the average is sure to rise along with his other stats. The Indians as a team have really played well in recent days and their lineup will score runs, not counting Friday’s no hitter, of course. Any manager that has a need at second base must act before this hot streak takes Hernandez straight to another fantasy team.

Adam Duvall, OF Miami Marlins, 19.8% Owned

Adam Duvall exacts revenge on Braves, makes Marlins history in 14-8 win - Fish Stripes

Perhaps Dickerson above isn’t available or doesn’t tickle an owner’s fancy. If that is the case, another Marlins outfielder can fill the need. That player is Adam Duvall. He can be as streaky as just about anyone in baseball, but the elevator is pointing straight up for Duvall right now. Entering play on Sunday, Duvall had hits in four straight games, including two homers and seven RBIs.

His .207 BA will get no manager excited. His six homers, 21 RBIs and 13 runs scored certainly will, however. Duvall also is limiting his strikeouts, with the exception of Sunday, which usually indicates he is about to become blazingly hot at the plate. Without question, his best quality is that he is widely available. We all know that Duvall can cool off as fast as he heats up, so act now while both smoke and fire are visible.

Brandon Belt, 1B, San Francisco Giants, 18.2% Owned

Brandon Belt and Giants Reportedly Agree to 5-Year Contract | Bleacher Report | Latest News, Videos and Highlights

Brandon Belt, just like most of his Giants teammates, is coming off a strong week. Belt has two home runs with three RBIs and four runs scored in his last five games. Saturday was a great day for Belt as he hit one of the homers, scored another run and had a walk. For the season, Belt if hitting .226 with seven homers and 19 RBIs.

San Francisco continues to be one of the hottest teams in baseball and Belt is a big reason why. He has scored 16 runs so far in 2021 and has an excellent .354/.484/.838 stat line. The Giants’ home park is one of the best pitching venues in baseball, making the seven homers hit by Belt even more impressive. His ownership rate has gone up 8 percent since Friday so if the need for a first baseman exists, jump to the head of the line or be left behind.

Freddy Galvis, SS/2B, Baltimore Orioles, 12.7% Owned

Orioles shortstop Freddy Galvis has been exactly what the team needed - Camden Chat

The ownership rate that Freddy Galvis has is insanely low considering how well he has played this season. Galvis left the Boston series with a hit in every game that stretched his hitting streak to 10 straight. Despite this, Galvis is hardly a blip on most manager’s radars. That needs to change and quickly.

For the year, Galvis is hitting .284-4-10 with 13 runs scored. In addition, he has a .340/.505/.845 slash line that is quite good for a middle infielder. Most impressive, Galvis had appeared in 29 of the Orioles’ 34 games. The five games missed was due to a groin strain, but that is now in his past and he is healthy. He qualifies at both second and short. What’s not to like? Add Galvis this minute as his ownership percentage is sure to rise after being included on this baseball waivers week six edition.

Yandy Diaz, 3B/1B, Tampa Bay Rays, 6.5% Owned

Rays activate Yandy Díaz from 60-day injured list - MLB | NBC Sports

What stands out about Yandy Diaz this past week is that he had three games with at least two hits. Best of all, Diaz is a fixture in the Rays’ lineup, having played in 34 of their 36 games. For the year, Diaz is hitting .250-0-9 with 10 runs scored. His OBP is an excellent .387. He won’t give a fantasy manager much, if any, power, but he also won’t give many negative points, either.

Diaz has an excellent batting eye, evidenced by only 18 strikeouts in 137 plate appearances. One of the chief complaints heard about most waiver claim articles is that the players recommended are largely already owned. That is certainly not the case with Diaz as he is available throughout the land. His dual qualification at first and third only boosts his value. Any owner with corner infield issues should act now before even this shelf is bare.

Robbie Ray, SP, Toronto Blue Jays, 34.2% Owned

Southpaw in Toronto: Mike Minor or Robbie Ray?

Last season when Robbie Ray arrived in Toronto, it was recommended that he be picked up by fantasy managers. Obviously, that did not go well. Even so, he is receives the nod once again with positive stats to back up the selection. Coming into his next start Tuesday in Atlanta, The Jays and fantasy managers couldn’t possibly ask much more from Ray. He has pitched into the sixth inning or longer in his last three starts. He has come away from those starts with 51 fantasy points.

Ray has struck out nine hitters in a game twice in his last three appearances and hasn’t walked a single batter in any of them. That is great news for managers after Happ walked six in a April 18 start against Kansas City. He also hasn’t given up more than three earned runs in any of his past five starts. For the season, Happ is 1-1 with a 3.14 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. Without queston, Ray has definitely earned his place on this baseball waivers week six edition.

J.A. Happ, SP, Minnesota Twins, 29.6% Owned

Twins 2, Pirates 0: J.A. Happ and Willians Astudillo end Twins' losing streak - Twinkie Town

Without a doubt, the Twins have to rank as one of the biggest disappointing teams in baseball to this point. The blame for that doesn’t belong to J.A. Happ, however. That is especially true when taking into account his last three starts. In them, Happ has pitched 19.2 innings and has allowed only three runs total. For the season, Happ has a 2-0 record with a sterling 1.91 ERA and 0.85 WHIP.

If a manager is looking for a strike out guy, Happ won’t be the selection. All other stats are off the charts, however. Who possibly couldn’t be looking for a pitcher that has gone into the seventh inning in two of the last three times he has taken the mound? He doesn’t strike out a ton of hitters, but he doesn’t allow a lot of hits, either. Happ has allowed just nine in those three starts. He lines up to take on the White Sox in Chicago in his next start Tuesday. If Happ pitches well in that game, he will certainly be off the wire. Make the plunge before that happens.

Tyler Anderson, SP, Pittsburgh Pirates, 12.6% Owned

Pittsburgh Pirates: Tyler Anderson Has Breakout Potential

When the season began, it was assumed that there weren’t going to be many Pirates players featured in these waiver pickup articles. However, they have been included in almost a weekly basis and now one of their pitchers is getting in on the act. That pitcher is Tyler Anderson. He is only three and three on the season, but that is all there is for fantasy managers to complain about. Anderson held the Padres to two runs on just two hits in 6.2 innings coming into this weekend’s start. He got no run support, though, and took the loss.

Everything else is pretty much coming up roses for Anderson. That is absolutely true after his Sunday start against the Cubs. Anderson pitched eight innings and allowed two runs on four hits, striking out six and walking just one. Anderson has now given up two or fewer earned runs in his last five starts. He sports a 3.05 ERA and an excellent 1.040 WHIP.

Additionally, Anderson has scored 11 or more fantasy points in each of those starts. Let’s face it, there aren’t a lot of quality starters sitting around on the wire. There can be no question that Anderson represents strong value. Act today before all of the shelves are bare.

Also Worth a Look:

Daulton Varsho of the Diamondbacks hasn’t hit yet, but he is worth keeping an eye on. Varsho is an outfielder that also qualifies at catcher and if he starts swinging a hot bat, will make having no other catcher necessary on a roster.
